Yep, I'm going under the knife in a few days.
Just getting my wisdom teeth out, but still surgery.

Im a little freaked out. Im not a fan of getting shit stuck down my throat (i have a horrible gag reflex) So even tho ill be asleep, im sure my stuborn ass will be throwing shit back up at the dentist.

The entire procedure is suppsoted to take about an hour, then I recover for 2-4 days. I ge to take the happy-time-feel-good pills after I come out.

Best wishes are appreciated, and a few stories of how "this wont really hurt more than a day, and i wont even miss them" would be nice too.

Oh and after the surgery, ill either be around non-stop for a day or 2, or disapear completely depending on weather im awake and in pain, or asleep (hybernating). The doctor says I need to stay upright and keep myself distracted, so the computer is pretty much perfect.

Ill let you guys know before I go in, and keep you posted afterwards (when/if Im awake)

You'll be in pain and recovery for 6 months, GG.

Just kidding. I've never had that, I don't know how it is.

I'm getting my wisdom teeth removed August 8th. I'm not really worried. The oral surgeons are trained at what they do, or else they woudln't have passed school, and wouldn't have been hired. They've done it before a bunch.

AztecWarrior
2004-07-23, 12:52 AM
Just because they're trained surgeons doesn't mean it doesn't hurt like a bitch. In all seriousness, this operation does hurt. But with the happy gas you should be all right.

Congrats, that made me laugh

Anyhow yeah. My wisdom teeth went pretty uneventfully. Apparently, Im pretty resistant to the gas and the injection, cause it took me about 40 minutes before I went out, with laughign gas, and the knock-you-da-fuck-out juice.

Woke up, and felt a little drowsy. Walked to car. Got a shake.

NOTE TO EINE: DO NOT EAT ANYTHING RIGHT AFTER! The front of your jaw, at least for me, was COMPLETELY NUMB. Like, totally. I could not feel the ice cream running down my chin, or the severe coldness it inflicted.

Wen to sleep. Dont try eating anything solid for the next week, it inflicts le pain.

And, after that, youre golden.

o man, I never go into surgery without getting knocked out. it was great. when I had to have an emergency operation on my hand last september, they put me on a hospital bed, pumped in morphine, and some other drug that makes you lose your memory. it was cool. all I remember is lying drugged out on the rolly bed as they take me into the operating room. I actually got on the operating table by myself but I dont remember any of it. then I found myself in a hospital bed in my own room, as if it happened in an instant, when it was really like 3 hours.

Yeah I had all four of mine out on May 7th. I was lucky, three of the four grew straight up (not crooked or impacted) and only one had to be cut out. None of the four had to be broken up to be removed.

I got laughing gas, which was the best thing evar. I was vaguely aware of the fact that my gums were being cut open and sewn shut, but it was like I was daydreaming the whole time. And for some reason, any time I thought of Martyr, I wanted to die laughing. Thankfully, they gave me the gas before they injected me with 8 shots of Novocaine (through scary looking metal syringes) so I didn't care about that, either.

All four of my teeth came out fine and I was fully aware of everything once the gas wore off, about two minutes after the mask was taken off. I couldn't feel the front of my face at all, and kept poking it because it felt like clay. The worst part about the whole thing was changing the gauze which were disgusting, slimy balls of blood. That made me sick.

Take a pill while you're still numb from the surgery, and ice the living shit out of your face. Have an ice pack on your face while one's freezing and keep switching. Ice them for one day at least. Plan on eating mush for the first day and most of the second day, I was eating normal stuff (carefully) on the evening of Day 2.

The surgery was the least painful part of the process. I was a little achey a few hours afterwards, but nothing a little Vicodin couldn't handle. Rent a bunch of movies, get a Sam's Club box of Snack Pak's, and ice your face until you're blue!!

Good luck!

Eh i hear it hurts like a bitch so gl with that.I think ill keep mine forever,i hate surgery.I had a cavity once and everyone told me it was easy doesnt hurt blah blah blah.So i go in ask for novacaine docs like hmmm i dont think you ll need that today its on the surface and very small.Well turns out he found like 2 others and those were far back and deep and he never told me or gave me novacaine so here i am with no novacaine with a drill in my mouth. My god one of the more painful things in my life, espically when he put water in,it was freezing cold and stung like no tomorrow.By the end I had tears all up in my eyes and was about to cry like a lil baby and I never cry.I didnt cry when I broke my arm in 3 spots, didnt cry when i got a nail thru my foot but after this i wanted to cry.

Eine, what's the story with your teeth? Have any broken through your gums? Are they straight or crooked?

Those will all decide how painful or not your recovery is.

EineBeBoP
2004-07-23, 10:45 AM
3 of 4 ae 1/2 covered by gums. 3 pf 4 came in jsut fine, and are straight, but 1 is literally sideways. Gunna have to chop up at least 1 he said.

Triggar

Oh, so you should probably be fine. My oral surgeon said he'd probably have to section the one tooth up (the tooth that was growing at a 45 degree angle directly into the tooth next to it), but he just cut my gum open and it came out fine.

But they should just be able to use small cuts to get your others out, and you shouldn't swell up or be in too much pain.

In my professional Oral Surgeon opinion!

I pwned my wisdom teeth.

After the surgery, I asked the nurse if I could see my bloody teeth - I couldn't believe that I'd had all four taken out otherwise, I was off in my own little world during the whole thing!

You'll be fine, have your mom buy you ice cream and pudding. You'll be a little Starvin' Marvin at first, oh yeah, NO SOUP. Don't eat anything hot or else you'll dissolve your blood clots and get dry sockets.

HAHAHA suckers! My wisdom teeth are growing perfectly straight! No knife in my mouth!

My friend had his teeth pulled out recently. His cheeks swelled up because we let the wounds get infected. He kept drooling and shit and said he couldnt feel it. It was disgust just to watch him try to eat. It was hell of alot of fun to make fun of the way he pronounced words. Those 2 weeks were probably some of the worst parts of his life :D

Well, I havent heard the dentist or anyone say *anything* about it, so im assuming mine are growing straight as well, which they should be, because I have already had tons of teeth removed in order to make way for teh straightining of them. Im gonna need to check that.

Like I said, I have gotten many a tooth pulled (cause my mouth is too damn small) and it was a bitch to deal with, but nothing serious. Just kinda feh messing with all the guase pads. Those things get bloody quick.

Spee... I think thats beavers you're thinking of.

Human teeth do not "grow" like that. Thats why we have a set of baby teeth, and lose them to be replaced by our adult teeth. However, rodents have teeth that are continually constructed by their body and pushed out. If they do not wear down their teeth it will lock their jaw shut. If starvation doesn't kill them somehow, the teeth continue to grow (in a curved arc) until they penetrate the interor of the rodent's skull, growing into its brain (causing death... duh).

However we lucky humans don't have to worry about any of this. Our set of adult teeth only grow as we age into adults, and then emerge at full size when we lose our baby teeth. At least, thats my understanding from Biology class (which I admit, was a while back). Aspiring dentists feel free to correct me. :p

Quick update guys/

Went in today and everything went well.

<3 pain drugs <3
<3 pain drugs <3

hehe.
was pretty messed up when i came out from being tired from knock-out shot still and cotton swabs in the mouth and being generally disoriented from falling asleep somewhere and waking up womewhere else.

my entire head was pretty numb when i woke up so couldnt really talk. thank god my parents are fluent in sign language and im not too horrible. My brain was pretty much back to normal, but body just wouldnt seem to listen to any movement commands. i just got home, then fell into the reclining chair with ice, a mountain dew (doctors orders tongue.gif ) and my iriver. drifted in and out of sleep for about 4 hrs and now im in my room.

Kinda cool thing is that whenever i need to spit (fairly often) theres a hell of a lot more blood than anything else)

ok, im gunna watch a movie or sumthing. If somebody would be so kind as to revive and re post this at PSU, this has worn me out more than i thoguht it would.
ill post more tmew

This is nowhere near as bad as i thoguht it would be, and ill probobaly be back at work thrusday (could prolly go tmrw, but i dont really wanna :p )

No, you misinterpreted what I said. The tooth doesnt grow, per se - The roots keep on extending. Least, thats what my dentist told me. However, since I did get my teeth pulled, I have had a scar over where my kidney is....
