On another forum I post on, a guy brought up new games comming out... of course.. I just HAPPENED to mention PS. And a certain unnamed, cause it just would not be fair to name him here and not tell him about it.. individual started getting smart alec with me... These are his posts.. please insert the appropriate answers that you know I gave to him in between his posts.

Yes, fuck sony the publisher of planet side, oh wise one .

And planet side is as much of a MMORPG as everquest, DAoC, and SW:G. They just call it a MMOG. The game play may be difrent but the mechanics are the same.

Shadowbane is where it's at (www.shadowbane.com). PvP to the extreme

So i guess Missions are a nother name for quests, and just because there are no npc's dosn't meen it's not an RPG. Like i said the game play is diffrent but the mechanics are pretty much the same. Battle ranks = levels, Certs = skills. You can call a skunk a dog but it's still a skunk. Don't get me wrong planet side looks cool and all, and i'll probably play it. But i'll never let the wool fall over my eyes.
Ooo, Ooo. Don't forget about anarchy online and endless ages. But they have levels instead of battle ranks making them rpgs instead of fps .

::Edit::
On another note about planet sides economy, if i'm not mistaken there is still an economy in planetside, it's just not player driven. How else would you get your weapons, armor, & implants? Also the player base creates the story line in planet side, so there's still a story line your following it's just not layed out for you. And i'm sure there will be GM's that come in and add flavor to the story here and there in the form of top secret missions and such.

The only difrence between planet side and what you think of as an RPG are npcs. Calling one ignorant when ones self is ignorant is a bit naive don't you think?

He is, of course, an Idiot (note the capital "I").

But there is a shimmer of insight to be gained:
Any game in which you assume a role, you are playing that role
Any game in which you play a role is a Role Playing Game
In Planetside, you assume the role of a soldier
Thus, Planetside is a Role Playing Game

Of course, this applies to about any game in existance.

In reality, I do think of PS as a MMO RPG with FPS gameplay.
There are levels.
There is a in-game community (as opposed to web based).
And you will play a defined role.

This can be an interesting topic. If you disagree, and think Planetside is not a RPG, then define RPG and show how PS does not fit in that definition.
Go on, I dare you.

By that definition... Postal was an RPG.... so was Super Mario Brothers...

Traditionally tho... PS is not an RPG, rather contains some traditional RPG elements enfolded into the FPS genre.

Right, that is what I said. A MMO RPG with FPS gameplay.

No no, its an MMOFPS with some RPG elements.

Rpg don't use player based skills, rather roll to hit. To have a debate, there must clear rules, ambigious definitions kill all debate.

Thus we need some clear lines of definition here.

What is MAKES an RPG.

Lay out the definition, lets hash it through, and then get back to the debate :)

Well lets just give credit were its due and say planetside is a really great idea.

And all those trolls who do nothing more then run around flaming and trolling, saying how shitty the game is and how they would never play it, do you really miss them not joining us in the game? Would you really want someone like Bighoss watching your back?
