View Full Version : My dad gets me an ATI...

First of all, I didn't even want one. I was waiting for the new-gen nVidias. But he got a 9800 Pro for $170, so he snapped it up. I'll accept it, my GF3 being a little old.

It installs fine. We start it up and...whiteish squares appear during BIOS all over the screen, like polka dots. They reappear during Windows loadup in blue, then I get vertical lines in Windows.

We've jiggled around with the settings for a few hours. It's useable now, but only to find information. Games are completely out of the question. Horrible visual deformities, textures turning the wrong color, discolored blocks on the screen, lines across the screen, etc.

At which point he abandons it and promises to call tech support tomorrow, like that will happen.

Did you plug it into the power supply or whatever?

Also, make sure you *delete* your nVidia drivers, and get the new Radeon ones.

probably your Geforce drivers screwing everything up.

Somethigns is wrong with your computer. Your mobo is lame-friendly.

I suggest setting your current rig on fire, and dancing onit's ashes. Anything that doesnt accept an ATI card is obviously flawed in design.

or it could just be the nVidia drivers fucking his display up.

or his computer could fail at existence.

Much higher chance of that anyhow.

The card might be DOA. Thats what kept happening to my friend's radeon mobility.

I've recieved motherboards that were bad right out of the box. Anything is possible.

could also be that you are trying to run an 8x AGP in a non-compatable MOBO

Check that as well... may be a bios setting to make it 8x

^ Follow the instructions and use it to delete all video-card drivers on your comp. Then re-install the latest ATI drivers. Should fix your problem.

So what part of the drivers load at the bios?

If its at the bios the card is junk. RMA!!!!!!!!

Ok, drivers were cleaned pre-installation. I already have and used DC. My dad thinks that the MOBO is just too old and giving us crap. It's a SOYO. There has been discussion on the power supply: I need at least 12 amps on the 12V line and I have 17.

The geForce is back in for now. We may re-do the installation to see what happens.

Did he by chance buy it used? If so it sounds like you got artifacts. Which comes from someone trying to flash a 9800SE or something to a 9800 Pro but some of the pipelines are bad. If he did buy it new... not sure then I'd return it and get another first. I've dealt with power and agp 8x issues for these boards and they usually cause no video or blue screens. Not artifacts.

Not worth the trouble, as I said before, RMA, or return or whatever, not having enough power isn't going to cause artifacts, videos going to cut out or freeze.
