If we needed to, I'm betting we could neutralize/reverse the wave with a bigass bomb/nuke or something along those lines.
We could neutralize it with a zillion tampons. The supar-HEAVY days kind.

Wouldn't that just stir up more movement and waves? They mentioned that waves would hit both sides of britain. That means that this stuff would bouunce around. If we nuked it waves would still probably hit some part of the world.

It would break the wave up, I thikn. Of course, I'm not a physics major, so, meh.

Are you implying that we are going to nuke a tidal wave?

All you could really do in a situation like this is evacuate. Even though scientists know it might happen soon, they don't know exactly when, and the wave travels very fast. So its the same situation as an earthquake. You're pretty much helpless.

What Im thinking they would try to do, is launch a nuke into the water a few hundred miles prior to where the wave would hit. IN addition to annihilating any ocean life in there for eon, sna making PETA shit itself, it would generate, I think, a massive wave. Unfortunatly, waves go in circular patterns unless created at an angle.
So, the nuke would have to hit the surface at 45 or less degrees, and explode. The wave would hit the other wave, resulting in one of a bunch of possibilities.
1: Like a sine wave, the nuke wave hits the island wave, and the island wave is either 1: Pwnd, or 2: weakened.
2: nuke wave hits island wave. Creats epically monstrous whirlpool that sucks in ships for 50 miles.
3: zee n00ks! Zey d0 nus'ing! And the waves pass through each other harmlessly (Not so sure about this one...)

The trajectory of the warhead would have zero bearing on the explosive forces. It could be launched from a submarine a mile under...
As for the wave canceling out the other one...I dont think the wave from the nuke itself will be any better, odds would tend to point to the opposite.
So ultimately what we have is Deep Impact...but with France surviving.

Too many unkowns to do really anything at all... namely a time frame... If people are told they need to evacuate you get large scale panic and people die in the ensuing riots... If you don't do anything the supposed wave kills people. You use a nuke you fuck up an ecosystem plus there are no guaruntees, if detonated at even slightly the wrong time or slightly the wrong angle the Tsunami will just gain more power, or there will just be another big wave out there...

I'm not saying it has to be a NUKE, I'm sure a few couple hundred thousand pound bombs would do the job too.

The thing you have to consider, is how long would we even have to react? An hour or two, at most, as the wave comes in?

Between nine and 12 hours after the island collapses, waves between 20 and 50 metres high will have crossed 4,000 miles of ocean to crash into the Caribbean islands and the eastern seaboard of the US and Canada.
Anyway... in the event this happens can I come stay with you Early? YOU ARE MY ROCK!

You'd have to use so many bombs you'd kill basicaly everything in the atlantic, and the wave would be fast enough that there would not be time enought for them to get there
EDIT: I remember watching a thing on discovery about this, Kansas

As far as I know... if a Tsunami hits the only way to know is with seismic readers on the bottom of the ocean... and a tsunami doesnt take much to pop up and fuck up anything... wasnt there a region of japan that was hit by a small Tidal wave couple years back and it made a shitload of corpses and water in the streets for months...?

I live in Midwest. Nothing but a goddamn Chinese invasion is gettin' me.
They say people don't care enough. What can you do? Pour a few hundred billion dollars into some crackpot project to pull the island back up? Build a barrier where it'll fall to stop it from hitting the water?
Or better still, find some resource on this island and start mining. They'll disolve that thing in a couple years.
Same with super-eruptions and massive comet strikes. If it's gonna happen, we're fucked. Lots of people and animals will die, and we're gonna try to rebuild.

I doubt a 100 ft wave is going to be as cataclismic for the USA as some of you make it sound. :p
I live 3 miles from the atlantic and im not worried, not like there is anything I can do about it anyway.

But the thing is the Wave gets MUCH higher when it hits the beach becasue it no longer can wave so deep in the ocean, it could possibly level all of the skyscrapes that have nothing inbetween them and the waterfront, oethr than trees and other small thingys like houses. And all the water even if it didn't destry the buildings it would kill any electric things. Think about it Wallstreet would be under many feet of water, with the rest of manhattan. It would basicaly cripple the US.

eeessshhh.
Didn't hit the link, but they've been saying this crap for years along with...
1) San Andreas fault will cause Cailifornia to slide off into the ocean! (If an earthquake that big happened, whole world is in a pickle + considered impossible).
2) The Super-Volcano will erupt in Yellowstone and wipe out most of life as we know it. (Hope I'm there when it happens...quick death).
3) Meteor or Comet from space will slam right into us! (Hope I'm in its path, quick death).
Bottom line, there are numerous cataclysmic events that "could" happen and not a damn thing you could really do about them. You could move to avoid one....only to be in the way of another...or worse, be so far from it that you experiance the "effects" of the said event. Ex. Starvation, warfare for food, disease, etc.
Go on with life as normal. Nothing to see here people, move along. These aren't the droids your looking for. "These aren't the droids were looking for". You can go about your business. "You can go about your business". Move Along. "Move Along! Move Along!".
