View Full Version : How long can you hold your breath?

I did 3 minutes once but I was on the verge of passing out(of course I'm only 13...). I attribute that to the extreme oxygen debt I get from running cross country. I want to be able to hold it for 6 minutes one day. Just wondering how long you guys can do it for. BTW I was running in place for the last 30 seconds because I was so excited I broke 2:30 :D . I actually felt better when I got my mind off of the time...

Pretty sure humans can't hold it for 6 minutes (You'd pass out before then, most likely, and suffer brain damage)

like 30 seconds.

You pass out AFTER you take a breath(Wierd, I know) because your brain has turned off certain functions due to lack of oxygen. I have seen my coach hold it for 6 minutes though(nuts). It can be done(It does kill a few brain cells though if you just completely duct tape your lips shut or something, not too harmful).
EDIT:
like 30 seconds.

I dont really care, like everyone, including you said, all you do is fuck yourself up.

Well, you have to do it to an extreme extent, IE. Black out and having to be woken up by another person and not just coming out of it as if you were sleeping. I know what your saying. Who cares? I wouldn't either unless I couldn't beat practically everyone in my class at it:D.

HOLY SHIT! Nice work d00d!!
BTW, I will never say "d00d" again.
Back when I used to freedive my best was about 5 minutes. You just need to control your heart rate. (Yes, with practice, you can control your heart rate).

Just have to phycologically calm yourself, and think about it slowing. Not that difficult.

Hehe I remember one car trip when I was like 5 me and my stupid ass friend were "holding our breath" the entire 45 min ride by breathing through our noses constantly and talking about how cool we were.
Seriously though, I just clocked my self at 1 min. I could of gone for longer but it was starting to get uncomfortable and I diddnt really give a rats ass. I probably have bigger lungs then the average joe. 5 years of playing clarinet and 2 of marching band make a big difference.

Woohoo, someone who doesn't tell me "OMFG IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO HOLD YOUR BREATH FOR 3 MINUTES WITHOUT DYING!!!11111". I can't seem to find anyone that believes me. Nice though, 5 minutes. I'll tell you when I beat it:).

Fool. You = wrong. Humans can hold it and have for 9+ minutes. When your body tells you it needs air, it really doesn't. If you resist it, you won't pass out. Continually doing this (pearl divers) build strength and can do it for many many minutes.

I can make it about the length 150ft on one breath last I checked. This is usally if I am swimming a nice gentle pace with not stress. If I really wanted to I could maybe do 200 - 225ish.

A minute and a half, maybe?
Since I play saxophone, I used to be able to hold it for around 2 minutes, but I've learned how to breathe circularly (inhale while exhaling), so I don't really pay attention to how long I can hold a breath.

1.30 minutes, maybe. I'm too lazy to try. But after 2 years of heavy passive smoking (You can choose your family, but you can't choose your friends... yeah...) and zero excercise for 3+ years (bar GCSE PE) makes my lungs about the size of a sock each.

You can not kill youself by holding you breath; breathing is involuntary action caused by the Medula Oblongata... it doesn't require your consciousness to occur. So if you passed out your Medula would make you start breathing agian...
That being said... 1.5 - 2 minutes for me...

On a serious note, I sometimes do forget to breathe, which leads to much panicking and heavy intakes of breath. Very embarassing during classes.

Last time I forgot to breath was my first and only drug experience.
Ate around an 1/8th of weed in a cake. Whitied, kept forgetting to breath and gasping for air.
Other fun-ness included the hallucination that I was in fact a demon called Galvin, summoned to earth to reign terror and Galvinize people..
Needless to say I have no experimented with drugs ever again :P

Mr. Paul that's called Apnea, you need to see a doctor, you have a very real threat of dying in your sleep and/or suffering brain damage.
http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/index.asp?id=55885 That's the record free dive (I think for both men and women, I haven't paid attention in a long time).
I think the longest time is close to 12 minutes by some crazy free diver, but I can't remember who and I don't really care.
I can pull about 2 1/2 minutes swimming, probably about the same if I was just sitting there.
Other fun-ness included the hallucination that I was in fact a demon called Galvin, summoned to earth to reign terror and Galvinize people.. Thats so wierd, because I AM Galvin the Galvanizer. I reign terror, and galvinize people all the time. What are the chances....
Speaking of FreeDiving, if you ever get the chance check this movie out, it's good: The Big Blue (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095250/)

10 seconds? I'm in marching band, but in percussion you don't really need to worry about breathing.
