Just got off the phone with triggar, they are still in Orlando. They called the power company and according to them, the power will be back on by Tuesday. So, they decided to just stay put instead of going to NC, because it'd be a wasted trip to drive up and back just for a day or two.

It's pretty hot down there, so they're just chillin outside, playing with Isis Pyat, and dipping their feet in cold water in the bathtub (not all at once, mind you...)

They hope to be back up and running by Tuesday.

Stay tuned for more breaking news ;)

actually, we live in daytona beach, which is where we still are.

roofers showed up today, shortly after i managed to snap a couple pictures of the damage.

as for our electricity, florida power & light has extended their estimate to noon tomorrow (from midnight.)

most of the traffic lights in the area are working now, so we were able to make it in to the university campus, which is still closed due to the widespread damage, but there's power here and most of the oc-3s are up... and most importantly... air conditioning.

i meant to upload pictures, but left my cable at home - you'll have to wait until tomorrow.

anyway, yeah, we're pretty severely bored here without power, so we figured we'd come up with something to entertain us and you... i'm trying to get trig to leak the contents of the gift boxes, a couple letters at a time to each successive caller. of course, that means you'll need my phone number...

i'm posting it on irc in a couple minutes.
we're charging our phones right now, so we should be good to go for tonight.

Oh yeah, I have to tell you guys about the coolest part of the hurricane.

Last night, we heard that Super Target was open for business, but without power. We nicked a phonebook from our leasing office and called Target to confirm, and they were in fact open, without power. So we made up a shopping list and headed out.

So we get to Target at around 2000. Imagine how the world would look if, say, the rapture came and everyone was gone but all the stores and buildings were still there. Target's signs were blown off and there were no lights in the parking lot, lending to the "massive black hole" feeling. But once we parked the car and entered the store, we entered Bizarro Target.

No lights were on in the store with the exception of the weak emergency lights. There were, I'd say, 50 or so people in the entire massive store. No music, no ambient noise... we felt like we shouldn't have been in there, like we broke in after-hours or something. The shelves were fully stocked with the exception of Mag-Lites and candles (and of course, perishable foods).

We loaded up our cart with canned food, potato chips, pretzels, cookies, gatorade, juice, candy, etc, and Martyr said, "This is every kid's dream - it's like if all the grown-ups in the world disappeared and kids got to do their own grocery shopping."

I also bought Trix cereal bars purely on impulse... possibly the most sugary thing that I could have purchased... I had one for breakfast and promptly threw up.

But yeah, overall, we lucked out. My boss reported roof's in his apartment complex being blown clean off, other buildings in our complex had trees impale their roof... cars were smashed by debris, windows were blown in... we're extremely thankful that our apartment, our stuff, our cat, our lives are just fine.

Thank you all again for you incredible support and just plain awesomeness. I can't wait until next weekend - you all deserve a r33t vacation!!

Don't even joke about that. I blame the heat exhaustion... since it's 90+ degrees with 85% humidity and we have no air conditioning, and I'm dehydrated!!

JERK!!

Haha, FP&L gave you that estimate? FP&L sucks at everything but providing shitty service as the only power company in Florida. At that they excel. Power next week. :P

Nobody hoards power....FP&L just blows amazing amounts of ass. That's almost socialism for you: FP&L is allowed by the state to be the only power company. They take FOREVER to repair power lines, even in weako storms.

So I'm sitting on my floor, reading some Hemingway and enjoying a tuna sandwich. I'm thinking to myself, "You know, I'm starting to appreciate this no-power thing. It sort of feels like a real summer now."

All of a sudden, I hear a hum. The hum of the fish tank air thing. I looked over at the TV, and sure enough, the green light was on. The DVD player's red light was looking at me saying, "You got it sista, POWER!!"

Electricity hath been restored!!!!

Air Conditioning for teh win!!!

we in memphis had the same situation last year in July. Most of the city was without power for two weeks or so. Add that to 93F temps. Then our power crews turned away out-of-town crews because the latter werent "in the union" so thusly it took two weeks instead of something shorter. I feel for ya. It sucks being without power in hot hot weather.

Ivan

Well the union power companies are far more trained and have better safety regulations than the non union companies. My brother signed up for the Line Man union a few months ago. He passed the tests. Just is waiting for a call. They said that could take a while because once people get in the union they don't leave unless they die because they basically set you up for life. So there hasn't been any openings yet. hehe

it wasnt that the other crews weren't in a union its that they weren't in the same union as the local people..
