Recently my a friend of mine in particluair has been urging me to start an army for Warhammer Fantasy to play with him and a few of my other friends. So far I have pretty much settled on playing as the empire. However, the more and more I look into the stuff the cooler and cooler the warhammer 40K stuff looks. I was planning on doing both, but it is quite an expensive hobby, and would probably require me to get a job if I were to go all about and buy a buttload of stuff. The same friends do play 40k, expect it's only 2 of the 4. If I were to play 40k, I would play imperial guard, or the Tau. Now this is where PSU comes in. I need help deciding on what I should do. Check the poll above.

Also, if anyone has any tips on what kind of units I should include in one of my chosen armies would be greatly appreciated.

I only played 40k. I had a 1500 point Ork army. Orks were the best. Even though 80% of the time I played with my friends I always got my ass kicked. I fucken hate Space Marines and thier cheap ass rules. Especially the black templar.

Empire for Warhammer. They have a Tank.

Imperial Guard for 40k. Tanks for teh win.

Tau is all long distance shooting. No real fun there.

EDIT: Helblaster is a must for Empire.

Dont play fantasy, I tried and it really wasnt much fun. 40k for teh win and I played Imperial also. Imperial are by far the funnest race IMO. Plus they look the sweetest on the battlefield, they got camo and shitloads of infantry and all those tanks, it can make the toughest Space Marine player quiver.

^ Truth. If you decide against that though, play 40k, go with Tyranids, they're the most versatile.

Versatile? All they do is 'Spikey Death'. *Run run run run* *stab* *dies*

They have some ranged units, but that's not the emphasis.

Yeah, but you can modify them out the wazoo. Acid Blood, wings, spikes.

Spiky Burny Death, Spiky Hellish Being Death, Spiky Spiky Death.

Imperial Guard: Run him over, burn him, shoot him, or blow him to tiny bits?

Eh, they don't look as cool. If I had an army, they'd all have cardboard boxes that looked like jet-packs, and be covered in chrome. No guns, just big swords.

We'd lose every battle, but we'd look cool. Thus my justification for using Tyrannids.

anyone who uses tyranids and tries to make a ranged army is a moron, tyranids are pure melee, a hard army to use but brutal with experience

I play Guard and Feral Orks

First off

Wait on 40k for about 3 weeks for forth Edition to come out, make sure they don't bone it horribly.

Also to start out I'd highly recomend playing Marines. They are the easiest to start up and actually get good with. Guard and Tau are a bit harder.

As to Fantasy

If you want to spend deap money check out Britonians or a Slayer Army. I play Slayers and they are an absolute blast to play!
Empire is also kewl... but with the current emphases on Chaos they are always good (check out the Bestmen... hella fun) Also very soon they'l release Ogre Nation. That's the army I'm waiting for!

I played WarHammer 40000 a bit when my brother and I walked into a Games Workshop without knowing what it was. The guys showed us the basic rules and let us play around against each other on the tables they had set up.

We played for a few months afterwards and had 1000 point armies but one warning, making the scenary is a bitch! and painting takes hard to get good at. Practice on the plastic ones until you're skilled enough for the metal.

Definently go for the imperial, their mortar teams are awesome!

I had someone paint my army for me. I sucked and didnt have the time. Costed like a hundred for em to paint it all. Cheap price considering I had a huge army.

Necrons for 40k. Spray paint metal and paint a green base, and you're done!

Warhammer 40k is great. Be Space Marines though.
