Now that I think about it, it seems like the Planetside community is rather small and they are picking about 1000 people for beta, so shouldn't it be easy to get in? Is there any other big forum that discusses Planetside other than this one because it seems like the whole community is right here?

Hamma

There is Planetside.info as well, even there though, the community is small in comparison to other games.

but the beta was posted about on major news sites, so there will be plenty of applications

seeing as how the current poll has 2500 some odd votes, i'm pretty sure they'll have enough to pick from

As much as I'd love to be in Closed Beta, Zarparchian Law states otherwise. :(

The rest of you will get in fine though... why? For the same reason.

Well, looking at the community, we've got nearly 500 on the PSI forum, 100 or so people on this forum (with some amount of crossover), and maybe a few dozen more in a few little forums. Then you've got #planetside on Gamesnet, where we've got maybe 30-40 people at a time, most of them who are on one of these two forums. So that's maybe 550 hardcore forum whores. Then you count people who've been following and not whoring, and you get maybe another few hundred, rounding out to a thousand. Then you count the two thousand n00bs who read the news on Gamespot and spread it around, and you have the three thousand people who've already applied for beta.

Your numbers are WAY off.

Look at SWG, it garnered 250,000 beta applicants. That is INSANE.

Now, Take all the FPS whores out there (hehehe) and then toss in some RPG people... this game is on mmorpgcafe ya know, thats where I found it.

I bet they have upwards of 20,000 applicants (not counting dupes btw) to sort through.

I wouldent go that high yet, although its highly possible.

Nothing can really be compared to anything that has a star wars theme.. there are a bazillion rabid SW fans out there who want anything with the Lucas seal of approval

Actually, I think that number came from a dev in IRC yesterday. More later, when I have time.

How many people have the system req for the beta. I bet you can cut the population in half.

I have them :)

I went out and got 256k more RDRAM so i can meet the system req.

That was the one thing that surprised me. I thought I was sitting pretty with 640 megs, but even that is only a mear 128 more then the Min requirments. I wonder what the recomended ammount of Ram is.

CoolAid
2002-11-05, 12:06 PM
I bet the sys req will go down after beta.. they always have programs running in the the back of beta.

true.

I doubt that the processor requirements will go down any.

I'd rather see them have Min system requirements that allow for the game to be played with ease, then go with the bare min it takes to run the game like ass.

Take T2 for example. When I got it I met the Min sys requirements, and the game ran like shit. Most of the features in the Lobby area didn't work, switching between tabs was painfully slow. The whole time I was blaming Serria, and the Game for being crappy until I saw it running on a friends PC and everything looked great and ran fine.

So for the first few weeks i had the game I thought it ran like shit, but it turned out it was really my comp that ran like shit.

Bottom line ir that Realistic Min requirements = Happy Customers. If you tell them it will run on less, they'll get pissed off when it doesn't run well on less.

CoolAid
2002-11-05, 12:43 PM
You missed my point. The game will be running beta programs behind the game. Thats why the system req's are so high now. I bet they will go down for release. Otherwise they will loose a lot of business.

do you really think they'll be enforcing the 64meg vid thing for the beta? or maybe they'll need someone just shy of that on vid but cool on all the other spec?

I meet and/or surpass all the requirements except that one right now (@32meg vid instead of 64meg) mainly due to lack of funding.

am I a screwed pooch?

I don't know if the requirments will go down.

I think Sony has learned from there MMO experiences and are thinking of like 4-6 years in the future.

I think that they want to produce a game now that will still be competative in 4 years.

(I think EverQuest is limited by the fact that they don't want to alienate their customers who have been playing for years with an 8 MB graphics card)

There's one thing I'm not sure about, and when I say this I'm judging that SOE are handling the SWG and PS betas in the same way (the application forms were almost identical ;) ).

They clearly intend on making that application form stand for the duration of beta. I'm predicting that much of the optimizing won't have been done yet and they won't even be able to allow too many people who just meet the system requirements until they are sure that it can be run properly on those specs. I wonder if beta will start off "top heavy", with the more speedy systems.

Its a shame that we don't know exactly where the game is in development, if the game already runs well on those specs ... then there'll be more low end users in exclusive beta than 3dmark chasers :)

Hamma
2002-11-05, 01:14 PM
I doubt it will go down much, course there will be some optimising beteween beta, and gold release. But i suspect there will not be much of a decrese.

People who miss the upgrade bus will not be able to play :p

Shiver
2002-11-05, 01:43 PM
True, no one should be missing the upgrade bus.

Remember though, you don't have to catch the biggest and most expensive bus around though, unlike some ;) How speedy do you need it to be, Hamma? :D

My computer.

P4 2.00 GHz
512 Pc800 RDRAM
128 MB DDR Nvida GEForce4 ti 4600
DSl

I dont think ill have a problem ... could use more Ram but RDram is soo expensive..

2002-11-05, 02:12 PM
I'm about to scrap my 1.4 ghz P4 for something faster and when I do I'll have an extra 640 megs of PC800 ram, maybe I'll send you some.

Infact, I have an extra stick of 256mg PC800 ram that you can have if you want to go out and get yourself a matching stick since they have to be used in pairs.

CoolAid
2002-11-05, 02:19 PM
How did you get it up to 640... do you have more than 4 slots... im using (4) 128 sticks..

Unregistered
2002-11-05, 02:21 PM
Nope, just 4 slots.

64 x 64 =128

256 x 256 = 512

for a total of 640.

CoolAid
2002-11-05, 02:23 PM
ohhh. so i could go 128 + 128 and 256+256...

I thought they all had to be the same ...

good to know.

Unregistered
2002-11-05, 02:39 PM
Just so long as the pairs are the same, you can mix and match them. That's how I ended up with an extra stick of Ram. I got 512, and they gave me one stick of ECC, and one of Non ECC so it I took both sticks back to make sure I got they gave me the right (ECC) ram.

When I got home all 3 were in the bag, so I went back to the store a few days later to give them the Non ECC ram back, but they wouldn't take it because Story Policy said I couldn't return it after 15 days.

It's really hard to explain that it's not really mine, and i am not returning it, but I am giving it back. After about 15 min I said screw it and kept it.

So if you want a stick of Non ECC PC800 ram let me know.
