They aren't a waste of money if you listen to music alot. I take my ipod everywhere and listen to music everywhere... even during school sometimes. Now the Ipod MINIS are another story. Those are a major waste of money. 20g for $350 or 4g for $300, obvious choice.

Pros:
Storage
Organization abilities
Ergonomic controls (<3 volume wheel)
Backlight
Cons:
COST - in the name of all things good and holy it's expensive, plus some accessories you may want makes this a hefty, hefty investment.
iTunes - unless you use Kazaa/KLite/Emule/Bitorrent/CD, you have to use iTunes to get the music, which is true with everything but still.

It rocks. BIG RECOMMENDATION.
Note to those seeking Ipod repair:
Customer service rocks in every aspect. Almost.
Here's my story:
After getting it confiscated at school and losing touch with it for 3 weeks, I get it back, One problem, the hold switch doesn't work anymore. So I go on Ipod support page, get a repair form and everything (free repair [any excuse] for 6 months). They ship me a box with a shipping label and a lot of "comfy" stuff to put the iPod in, So I see the shipping label, and being the dumbass that I am, I just hand it to the Postman. BIG MISTAKE. Apprantly I was supposed to drop it off at a DHL (something like UPS/Fedex) dropbox [LESS THAN A BLOCK FROM MY HOUSE] So a month later I call up Apple, wondering where the fuck it is. NO BODY FUCKING KNOWS. NOBODY. NOT THE FUCKING POSTMAN, NOT APPLE, NOT THE POSTOFFICE, NOT ME. NOBODY.
Apple support did not include a fucking letter on how to ship it to them. Even though they said one was sent, with an e-mail.

I highly recommend getting an iRiver instead of an iPod. One of the coolest things is the remote console. Which you can clip on to your shirt and change songs, adjust volume, change equalization, and activate recording with. It even has a screen so you can see what you are doing. The iRiver also comes with a built in microphone so you can use it like a tape recorder. Or if you want, it has a external microphone that you can clip on to your collar also. It also has 2 line out jacks (one optical) so you can have to people listening to the same iRiver without using a splitter. And my favourite part about it is the fact that you can just drag and drop songs into and, and use it like a portable hard drive, apparently you need to use some special iTunes program to add songs to an iPod. Last but not least, it is packaged with a double male jack so that you can plug it in to any stereo system with a microphone jack, and play your iRiver from there. You can do the same thing with a digital tape also I think.
Don't support Steve Jobs, get the iRiver. :p

the 40gb is still being manufactured at MSRP $429.99 which means youll be able to find it cheaper again.

While it certainly isn't as pretty as an iPod, it easily dwarfs it in features.
I like to call the iPod "iRiver's slutty little sister that everyone wants to get with"
Im certainly not saying that the iPod is bad. Not at all. its a great product (tho put out by a horrible company). I jsut think that the iRiver is a BETTER product and you should at least consider it.
Posted at an earlier date along with:
I've played with corrs plenty, thanks. Ill take my iriver any day.
how it looks just isnt that important to me.
add ons cost money. and you cant buy a "pack" of them, so its prolly around $20 each (just a guess, based on nothing) item.
Real time encoding, and input/output means that you can hook up a friends music device, and record straight to the HD. I've copied a song I liked off a friends CD player before that way. iriver comes in 40gb too. The lights on the displays themselves are pretty much equal (tho i often find myself blinded by the iriver light late at night) I prefer the actual information shown on the display better however. We all know what the ipod battery has been accused of (ipodsdirtylittlesecret.com or whatever), and so far the iriver has had no problems like that (of corse it hasnt been out as long, but still...)
iriver needs that program (itunes?) to transfer files back and forth. the iriver is basicly an external HD when its plugged in. I ALWAYS use it to back up files when I format.
its as simple as plug in - drag and drop - unplug - format - plug in - drag and drop again, and im done. the ipod would need drivers from itunes if Im correct.
ipod does upgrade its software, but theyd rather you bought the "next generation" ipod, instead of putting these updates out every few months.
Another thing, Corr's ipod broke a LONG TIME AGO. At least 2 months. (it was at the end of school corr, remember how you could listen to K&B with me at PE once you borrowed my cd player?) He sent it to Apple to have it repaired, and still hasnt gotten it back. What kind of company makes you wait Months for a repair?
another thing Jag, have YOU ever tryed an iriver? take your own advice and borrow one. just trying it for 5 min, youll get lost and confused. the iriver is a bit more complicated, but makes up for it with what you can do. took me about a day and a half to really learn how to use it.
The iriver certainly isnt for everyone. But i think that anyone here with half a brain will keep an open mind when looking for a mp3 player. Especially when your (or someone else) is going to spend $300 on this thing.

the iriver remote is a lot nicer than the ipods. you can do ANYTHING on the remote, than you can do on the main device. ipods remote is a mere volume up/dwn, next track, play/pause, stop. dosent even show the song info.
iRiver comes standard with:
Backlit remote control with 4-line display (see above)
iRiver earphones (nice, but I suggest your own)
Carrying case (very nice, protects the iriver, and hides it if you think its ugly :p )
Installation software CD (not even needed. I never used it. plug and play for the win.)
AC adapter (ipod dosent include this, you have to buy seperately or use firewire all the time [not good fro traveling])
USB 2.0 cable (dosent require firewire ports, but can use them [sold seperately])
Line-in cable (cool for recording music off other players (radio, cd, other hard drives, your comps speakers. etc.)
External microphone (cool for recording stuff at higher quality than the internal mic. gets rid of the sound of the hard drive you can *occasionally* hear when using the internal.)
Printed user manual ( very helpful, required reading to really learn how to operate at full capacity.)

I've owned both an Ipod and an Iriver. I got the Iriver first but it was fucked the first day. I tried everything and read the entire manual. That was probably 1 in 1,000,000 that was absolutely screwd but I returned it and got my Ipod. I don't buy from companies that I get a bugged product from, even if it is the 1 in 1,000,000 that didn't work. I love my Ipod and I love the interface 10x better than the Iriver's.

If you dont let me buy electronics, I will surely hang myself after one month of marriage.
Either way, I wasn't planning on buying one right now. Just checked one out for the first time the other day and thought it was cool :p

Wrong. Ipod would make her grab him by the collar and drag him into the bedroom.

Lol. I get free battery replacement and I got mine from Best Buy. Actually when the battery runs out, they give me a brand new Ipod(If a new generation has come out they give me the new version). Only $30 for the replacement deal. I think its worth it(The same if it breaks or anything, brand new Ipod).
