Wow, another upper echelon refitting. Wonder how long this one will last.
Also, isn't Lead Designer Smokejumper's job?

Yeah, defenitely worried now. This is producer 5? Plus we've lost Smokejumper. I'm questioning the game's future.

we don't know if we have lost Smoke, everything is just speculation until we get an official responce on his fate, either way I'm sure this is curtains for criticalmass.

Well, looks like Smokejumper isn't the Lead Designer anymore. This guy is.
Based on the guy's letter, he does sound similar to an actual PS player, though. I hope his vision for the game is good enough to let him keep his job for a few months, at least.

I'd like to see what these guys have to do to get hired (what projects they worked on and such) I mean I see no reason they hired this guy over say someone like hayoo where we have seen his work and know it's cool, after all I'm the one paying SOE my 13 bucks a month, my little rant I know the higher ups have their reasons I'd just wish they would let us know what they were other than this guy has a bazillion and one br20 characters

What they do is work at SOE and elsewhere for a significant period of time and get the experience required to advance to such a lofty position. Experience is the most important thing. No offense to Hayoo, but if he hasn't been a head figure in a commercial game's development previously, regardless of the potential some of his ideas may have on paper, there's no way they'd hire him to have this guy's job.

Well, Producer is obviously more of a manager position. But I think Hayoo has all the potential he needs for head imagineer/designer

The guy is Producer/Lead Designer, not just Lead Designer. And the last thing I want is to turn derail this thread, so I'll leave it at that.

Almost everyone starts at the bottom. He could have gone game tester -> test lead -> producer.

SmokeJumper's job was Creative Director (or something similar)
His signature now only reads "-- Dave" but his title is still Planetside Designer. It would seem that by Spork's lack of response that he is in the process of being "demoted" (I think he likes just designing stuff) or that he's discussing his future at SOE. I only hope that he remains on the Planetside dev team :(

We shall miss you Dave :(
Although it's slightly better when you know CriticalMass is still on the PS Dev team:
CM is still with the team, though in another role.

Yeah I saw that, so all these conspiracy wonks claiming PS is crashing or doomed or whatever should kindly close their mouths. They self-promoted themselves by going to better-suiting roles.
As long as the game gets better, I couldn't care if Gary Coleman ran the show.

I read the Stratics chat with the new guy and I think I like the direction he wants to take the game. Says he wants a "big picture" to the war (something to fight for), more ways to develop your character, and he's even privvy to the concerns many have over the current balance of the reaver. I am naively optimistic.

I saw that, I too am optimistic.
But I don't think the Reaver is overbalanced. I dislike the fact that its rockets need about a full pod to kill a guy, but you need five Reavers to take a tank out. I think of Rockets, and I think about Decimators. And then I wonder what the hell good a Reaver does, when it takes as much comparative damage (on a ratio) as it dishes out.

On a kill/death ratio I'm not sure the reaver is overpowered, I simply think it's implimented really, really poorly. There's very little room for skill with flying one of those things, in part due to the hideous flight mechanics, the dead-on nature of homing weaponry, and the fact that, as you mentioned, the reaver isn't very good at taking out vehicles at all, leaving infantry as the only really viable targets for them. All of the above would need to be tweaked to one extent or another in order to get something ideal out of that vehicle.

Basically the same thing as being a tester. It really doesn't take much to be a game tester, other than the ability to endure a shitty job.

Indeed he did own and will be missed. I too will most likey buy what ever game he next works on cause it's going to rock. Unless it's like some Bass fishing game... :D ;)
Like I think someone else said, Dave seems to just like being an imagineer. Comeing up with cool ideas and makeing games fun to play. I would love to do that. I'd love to take a peek at his idea book if he has one, PS related or not, I'm sure he has some kick ass ideas.
