At current, I need a contingency, short of just making it happen either way, for a part of a campaign im doing.

Currently, there is an army, 10000 Strong, roving across the lands, annihilating city after city. The PC's dont know this yet, but its in search of Leyline crossings, a site of great power, able to reshape reality. The army and the people controlling it, seek to resurrect a dead god using this leyline crossing.

As the PC's enter the town thats built over the leylines, the mayor explains about the crossings to them, and how it can reshape reality itself. He also suggests, that, using the leylines, they might be able to avoid being killed in the seige of the town by going forward in time. Mayor doesnt know exactly whats going to be there, but he's sure the PC's can find a way to help put a monkey wrench in the gears of whatever plan they have.

Thing is, I dont know how far, exactly, they should go. Where I want them is a sort of Return Of The Jedi-type situation, where the temple for this dead god is still under construction. However, should the PC's go forward in time, say, 2 weeks, that wont even be enough time for the enemy troops to finish up annihilating the existing structures in the town, thus leading to a situation where they die anyhow.

Suggestions?

I literally read that paragraph 5 times before I understood what you were getting at. A few questions... What race is the enemy army? Do they have magic users? If so, how powerful are they? Who/what is the leader of this army? How big is the town, and is it necessary for all the buildings to be demolished before the temple is built?

make them get lost in time in a dimension where there is only chaos, and they have to find a way out

for example theyre in the town and everyone is a zombie
they find the whole army that was going to attack dead on the ground, and the moon is about to fall

Is there a reason the PC's can't use the leyline crossing to somehow defeat the army? Ya know, by warping reality or something?

Mostly humans, but they have subservient animal races under their command as well - Kobolds, and such. Also, they have a few demons. Very few magic users. Most of what they do is slash/burn - Kill the villagers, burn the city down, explore for any ruins under it. The leader of this army is the governor of the country, whos being controlled by a Hellfire Wyrm. Town's about 2 miles wide, 5 miles long, and its quite necessary, as the temple is fugging ginormous.

And as per the leyline defeating the army, that wouldnt do anything. The governor would just manage to produce another one, being as he is, albiet unknowingly, consorting with dark gods and demons. The PC's dont know about the governor yet, so, killing him with the leyline crossing wouldnt be possible.

15 years for small temple
25 years for medium temple
50 years for large temple
75 years for temple surrounded by city

I would slip the PCS into an alterante reality for a few sessions.

It makes it all fit together better as a story and makes when they come back and temple is being constructed far more interesting.

Depending on the background of your players I suggest making them go into a universe where they actually have to learn to live... they get used to their little lives in the current time but when they cross the leyline they go into a world where their country is defeated and terror reigns on the street. So you'd have this big ass temple surrounded by a makeshift city built by people who wanted to survive.

I'm basing this on our current campaign in mechwarrior (he intends to make it last for 4 months + stuck in that place). We are looking for downed planes and pilots that arent suppose to fall into Lyran hands (kessrin technology, their anthromorphs who gave the tech to the clanners before realising it was a mistake).

Anyways were after these pilot but the city were going to is a floating city with an different world under it. The city above is paradise while the one under it is made out of the trash dropped from above (scrap metal, weapons, car, wood etc.) and most inhabitants are full of implants, cybernetics etc. wich were not used to seeing has most of our guys are military but we come from high class (so we'd be above usually). We don't know shit about the rules and we discover quite early that the law isnt what were used to (get arrested) since no one from above wants to go down they sent 30+ 10 feet automatons with dual chainguns that check for criminals and the such followed by small spider robots to carry the corpses and a big network of bounty hunters that get c.bills in exchange for their services.

You get the idea I think? Put them in an evil world where they'll have to adapt... put the emphasis on quick thinking rather the prolonged decisions (we were actually trying to find a way to defeat those robots... but instead I carved a hole in the wood panel blocking the alley to escape) and make them fend for themselves... their alone and they have to know it... they have to fit in or die until they find a way to get back or complete their mission.
