Same, takeoff is the best part of the flight. If you are sitting near the front of the plane during takeoff, look behind you at all the people in the seats further back, then you can see what kind of angle you are really on. :D

Landing's pretty fun too.

EDIT: But I hate the constant sound of the engines. I like everything to be quiet.

The only problem I have with planes is that while you are on them, confined to your little tiny ass seat area it makes you feel like you just had surgery. When your flight is 9 hours long it gets to be irritating.

I actually like the smaller planes. I love the Canadair RJs.

On the other hand, For the Hamma take-off thing. 747-400s have balls. They have a squishyabackinyerseat factor of 10.

I hate flying, it scares the shit out of me :p

CLEARLY I am kidding. I love flying, it makes my heart beat. Taking off is fun, but it's so easy that I don't appreciate it as much as I should. The most exhilirating parts of flying for me are:

- When you finish preflighting your plane, get your clearance, buckle your seatbelt and close the door, prime the engine, and then yell "CLEAR PROP!" - turn the key and the engine starts, you feel the plane vibrating around you, you feel the wind... ahh, it's amazing.

- When you're holding short of a runway and tower says your tail sign, "clear for takeoff", and you flip your switches and enrich your mixture and turn the transponder on and get rolling onto the runway.

- When you're on final approach, about 100 feet off the ground, your flaps are down, your power's out, you can see the runway getting bigger and bigger in front of you, everything is quiet, all you can hear is the sound of your breath, then you're 20 feet off the ground, then 10, then it's time to flare, and ohhh you touched down :)

I have a little adrenaline rush just thinking about it!

flying is fine, but it would be much cooler if it was in an air-car or somthing, so i coudl take reststops, and didn't have to be all scrunched up in the seats.

You can take rest stops when you fly... if you fly yourself :p

I am not so much uneasy with flying as I am with having my fate in the hands of someone else. Admittedly, this is usually the case in life, but I get uneasy when you combine that with something that, despite being very safe, seems so *extreme*.

If I were the pilot, and had some way to eject or something (Air Force Scenario), I'd be fine with it.

That, and the little creaks and bumps make me uneasy.

Yo Trig, i was thinking, if you were flying a 747, with no co-pilot for some reason, how long could you leave the controls for, and it still be fine? Like, could you go to the toilet or whatever? What about in the little-er planes?

Triggar
2004-09-26, 10:22 AM
In a 747, I assume you could leave it on autopilot for as long as you'd need to, it isn't safe but I'm sure it could be done. But this is an assumption.

In a smaller plane, like a Cessna 172, you can't go to the toilet because there isn't one, but if you have the power set and your elevator trim tab sorted out, and assuming it's a low or no-wind condition, you could reach back and grab something from the back seat if you had to, but again it isn't safe - another aircraft could come out of nowhere and strike you, or you could fly into a bird or obstacle.

If you like slow two person aircraft that is a decent one. I would rather have an F-16.

a 747 can fly itself form the airport to the airport, it only needs supervision every once and a while just in case, and someone to taxi it around on the ground

The autopilot/autoland. Most commercial aircraft these days only require the pilots be in control of the aircraft until reaching 200' AGL.

When you're on final approach, about 100 feet off the ground, your flaps are down, your power's out, you can see the runway getting bigger and bigger in front of you, everything is quiet, all you can hear is the sound of your breath, then you're 20 feet off the ground, then 10, then it's time to flare, and ohhh you touched down

I have a little adrenaline rush just thinking about it!
What about getting to 50ft AGL, flaring too soon, yelling "Oh my god" over the intercom, letting go of the yoke and letting the A/C stall and fall to the ground.

Remember kids, fly the aircraft, don't let it fly you.

I  airports, with the exception of MIA.

Miami International Airport= MIA
Missing In Action= MIA
MIA=MIA

Thus, Miami International sucks. It really does...

-Security checkpoint personnel certified 5th grade graduates
-"Arrivals" area easily 100F in the summer
-"Arrivals" area has next to no parking, then promises more ahead, only for that parking to never appear
-Even experienced travelers get lost
-Always under construction, never finished

Lots of major international aiports are like that. LAX, JFK and BOS are easily as bad if not worse than MIA in all those respects.

no way, Ive been to MIA, its really, really bad there. JFK is pretty good these days, although last time I was there it was like 2 AM, so there was no one in the terminal.

I've been through MIA too (And the rest of those airports, and many more) chief, or else I'd not have commented on it.

-Security checkpoint personnel certified 5th grade graduates
Sadly this happens because these positions are entry level and require little intelligence and minimal training, and as such pay not much more. When you need so many people you tend to get a lot of not so smart ones in the mix. It's the same thing as going to fast food joints
-"Arrivals" area easily 100F in the summer
It's hot in the summer and there's a massive amount of people in a small area, only so much air conditioning can do, all major airports are like this
-"Arrivals" area has next to no parking, then promises more ahead, only for that parking to never appear
The airport is in a major city, and therefore there isn't much room for expansion. Combine this with the massive amount of people travelling through that airport on any given day and this is bound to happen.
-Even experienced travelers get lost
They're pretty big airports, and again have a lot of people travelling through them, sadly it too is bound to happen even to experienced travellers who aren't situationally aware all the time.
-Always under construction, never finished
Because the airport is surely always trying to expand if they can get the land to use, or remodel and make better use of what little space they have. Show me an airport without construction, and I'll show you an empty terminal.

SAN is easily the best big airport I've been through. It's not in the same league as those I listed before, but it's a very large airport with quite a bit of traffic, but I never feel rushed there. Their security lines are always thorough, but quick. Granted waving my military ID tends to get me some special treatment from the handlers there, but being next to MCRD San Diego tends to do that.

Navaron

MIA is exceptionally fucked up, but the remodelling process is going well and that airport is one of the few majors with potential for growth. I may work at MIA because of that fact.

I think that MIA has not yet realized that it is on par with O'Hare, JFK, or Heathrow and is not expanding enough. There is talk of turning Opa-Locka (the smaller airstrip, 5 min from where I live) into an airport. I wouldn't mind the wooshing of jets overhead (I lived through it for a few years) and the smaller one would be a nice intra-national airport.

HAHAHA... my house is placed right between Philadelphia International and Northeast Airport... We get the Massive jets flying in over head in on direction while smalled planes land at northeast from the other... the sound of an airplane is second nature.

Flying is fun. It gets boring on long flights though. At least, those flights that are short enough that they don't serve you a meal or show a movie, but long enough that after a while you want to jump out of your seat and jog up and down the aisle.
