So, oregontrail.exe suddenly appeared on my desktop last night, it wasnt there when I started a wh40k dawn of war, but when I quit to my desktop there it is, oregontrail.exe with a pioneer wagon icon. It could be a strange virus, or...somehow..oregon trail the game, so, do you think I should open it just for kicks? I don't have a problem with reformating...

spyware.
:google:
edit:
i can't confirm spyware or virus, but i suspect that's what it is. if you want to test it, document it VERY carefully (as well as the damages), and submit it to your favorite virus lab before reformatting.

Opening a strange .exe on your desktop is like pulling the pin out of a grenade to look inside the hole.
Ask anyone who uses the PC if they've downloaded anything.

imo, it's lifting the spoon on the grenade to see what's under it.

I think its like stepping in an old minefield to see if the mines still work.
Because its usually a trojan/virus/spyware, but sometimes just a harmless genuine file.
Err...dont open it!

open it! it could be the game, either that or its a virus, but if its a virus then you were in trouble anyways!

Indeed, random, unwarrented *.exe files that make their way to you desktop can never be good.

Why would it be the game? Don't you think virus creators think of things like that - "well, if we call it 'oregon trail', some knob could think it's the game, open it and run it, thereby infecting his whole machine"?
Don't run it unless you want flames and excitement. Remove it post haste!

1) Does anyone else have acces to your comp? Ask them if they downloaded it.
2) If no, then scan the puppy.
3) Do a google search on it and try to discover info on it.
4) If its a bad thing, kill it. If no info, kill it. If its a nothing, kill it anyway.

ok, here's my tech perspective on it: right-click the shortcut and hit properties. find the .exe file itself, see what it's in, and see if it has any supporting files around it.

put the file on another machine on your network and open it. preferably an expendible one. :D

Delete it, and if you want to play oregon trail so bad, just warez it.

The game came out in 198whoknows, you probably wouldn't even have to warez it.
However it is my duty as a blue name to say warez = BAN!
