It depends..if the game designers are all geniuses and have impressive visionary powers and have somehow balanced the game such that very little tweaking needs to be done during the expanded internal beta, and bugs are far and few between, then it's possible a short beta followed by a short external beta, could precede a late April release. Otherwise May is likely. W00TAH!!

You guys are basing those opinions on beta times for an RPG, FPS doesn't need to test all the little NPC things and merchants and sub-systems and the like. Stresstest and bughunt are the only two things PlanetSide will need to do in its beta. Balancing will almost certainly spill over past the release date because MMO games always have patch programs that make delivery hassle-free for the client and they can't really tell how things will behave until players get their hands on them anyway.

Yeah, I am of the opinion this is all very biased. I personally think they can complete beta in 6 weeks if they wanted to which does hit mid April.

btw all everyone here in this thread is doing is speculating, nobody knows when the game is going to come out. You cant trust magazines, you cant base your opinion based on when beta is starting because, a game like this has never been tried before. Who knows what the beta will lead to. It will either be hugly successful, or they may discover some issues

From what the devs said, theyll be having 10k people for open beta, that would be enough peeps to let in everyone who looks at these boards + everyone thats been around since the game started. To me whether or not the release date is in march or april really doesnt matter since so many people are going to be getting into the beta before the game is ever released.

IMO they couldnt put 10k people on the open beta cause i dont think there would be that many people out there interested in it, the majority of the "fillers" will be people who just pass by stations site and sign up to try it out.

So long as it's not too much later, I don't care, really. Unlike a lot of games, PlanetSide doesn't need to worry about SWG releasing come April and stealing a lot of thunder. I really hope they don't trim feautres like EVE and SWG have been doing just to get it out the door in Q1.

If they had 20k people sign up for beta in november, i dont see why they only plan to have what? 3 servers?? 20k beta plus everyone else that picks it up in the store lol, itll be just like eq, 20 or so servers broken up into 2-3000 people :/ Sure ps has a vast amount of space even more so than any other game, but i dont think they would limit such a huge amount of people to so little an amount of servers. There wouldnt be battles of 200 300 hundred people, there would be battles of thousands, and that means lag for everyone.

Ive been waiting for this game a long ass time, not necessarily waiting, but ive been looking forward to it. I remember seeing my first screenshots when i got my old pc gamer mags years ago before i even knew eq existed. Hopefully it will bring me as much fun as the original tribes did (t2 sucks btw) fast paced killin + skill based gameplay = a fun game.

What I meant to say is more along the lines this is the FIRST MMOFPS (we are going to ignore WWIIOL because that release was a very sad and pathetic thing, and was probably at what a person could call the Alpha stage, and they obviously aren't going for that) so we have NO way to truly compare the length of the betas except by pure speculation. I can tell you one thing though, if the game is feature complete, which they said it is, beta is just implementation and balance, which shouldn't take long. Also the first few months will most likely be ironing out all the creases of the game that we will see, so beta really goes above and beyond just what they call "beta". :D

Why does everyone want to speculate on when Planetside comes out? The devs have said end of Q1. Even if it slips who cares! We certainly can't comment on it at this point, the last month of a game is when it all comes together and it looks pretty damn good as it is. The E&B beta only lasted a couple of weeks, then it was on the store shelves. If a RPG can do it in a month then I'm sure Planetside can. If April rolls around and there is still no news then it is safe to say that it will be delayed, until then why don't we keep our collective mouth shut and play the beta (or wish we were :D ).

based on previous sony testing...

1 week w/50 (feb 22-28), 1 week w/100-150 (march 1-7), 1 week 1/250ish (feb 7-14), snail mail CD's to 10,000 people (arrives ~ march 21st...

march 21st-april 15th, load test server, assuming all goes well, they could be shipping the CD's by april 1st, they'd know by then if the servers are OK with the stress... and the -game- itself is pritty much done, anything after the exclusive beta is pritty much load/balance testing, not heavily modifying client data files(only server data, such as weapon damage/cone of fire etc.)...

so CD's are sent to stores ~april 1st, arrive at stores within 2 weeks, and on sale.. yay!

EXCLUSIVE beta = D/L only, thats only ~500 people at most.. and the first 2-3 weeks of beta, THATS why they want people w/goo dconnections for this period, in order to D/L the game before exclusive beta is over you need something better then a 56kbps...


BUT, come OPEN beta, they WILL BE SENDING OUT CD's! to the next 10,000 people for the load testing, this is after the exclusive beta testers help find any other bugs/hardware problems that require heavy changes to PS's coding...

So when the CD is sent to the open beta testers, they dont have to d/l as much as the first 500 exclusive beta players had to (open beta players just need the smaller patches)....


then.. of course.. they have to have CD's at the stores to sell the product...
