Mrs Maathai "stood up courageously against former President Daniel arap Moi's administration in her quest to save the country's forests from the grabbing mania", the paper says.

The Kenya Times which is owned by the former ruling Kanu party with which Mrs Maathai was often at odds, is also full of praise, stating that the award is "simultaneously a dizzying and humbling development".

A commentary by Mumbi Ngugi in The Standard and entitled 'Hail woman of Africa, you have done us all proud' notes that "Kenyan, and African women in general, can walk proud, secure in the knowledge that it is one of their own who has won the coveted prize."

The award is a "recognition of the role of women in Kenya, long downtrodden and relegated to the bottom" of society, she says.

Aids remarks

The Standard reports that, after receiving news of her award, Mrs Maathai "courted controversy on the issue of HIV/Aids and human rights".

''Although I am a biologist, I have not done any research. I may not be able to say who developed the (HIV) virus but it was meant to wipe out the black race," the report quotes her as saying.

The paper notes that this is not the first time that Mrs Maathai has made similar remarks.

i bolded that part, because it's the part that weirds me out.
how could a nobel peace prize winner actually think black people are a different race, let alone imply that aids was created to destroy it?

am i misreading or misunderstanding her, perhaps?

Believe me, Nobel Prizes aren't worth mention any more, they always give it to some nutjob who doesn't deserve it. If someone developed the cure for AIDS in time for the next prize-giving, they wouldn't get it, they'd give it to some paranoid person like this one who knows nothing about what they're talking about.

I realy hate to say this, but if a person over there is not smart enough to realize how it gets spread there going to die. (unless they get raped or whatever)

You could put any skin color in place of black, but they would die anyway. It's not like white people sent AIDS on africans, in hopes they would die out nature created it. and it happend to be in africa. They lack most of the infastructure we have, so they are more vonerable(sp).

i need to point out that aids spreads among the uneducated regardless of race. you know this, and shouldn't overlook it.

in these areas, the common myth is that you can cure your aids by having sex with multiple virgins.

of course it's going to spread, if that's the common knowledge - it has absolutely nothing to do with race, location, orientation - and for those of you who mede reference to homosexuality, i should also point out that the frequency of transmission among gay men has fallen exponentially due to a rapid education campaign.

HIV transmission is now significantly higher among heterosexual demographics.

i was talking to this dude once, physics fourm, smart smart smart man, he was saying something about how its a WHO conspiracy, (world health orginization, formerly under the UN) and he told me a name, and said, if you want to know more look into him, i did, but didnt find anything as i really dont give a damn, and i pressed him to tell me up front, but he didnt want to for some reason, i dunno.

as far as i know, some dude fucked/got bit by a monkey, he wound up in a WHO hospital, and somehow it spread from there, either misuse of needles, or WHO picking it up and spreading it (thats what im guessing the conspiracy is), or something i dont know.

Well, there is the theory that AIDS is some huge population control virus. If you think about it, it really is a remarkable virus in the sense that its only real weakness is that it requires fluid transfer to spread.

Compare it to Ebola. Ebola kills MUCH faster, but burns itself out and usually dosen't get beyond a village in the cases we've seen. AIDS has a longer amplification time, but it gives itself time to spread.

There's also the theory that its a big money train. Probably a little more believable then the "OMG DESTROY CIVILIZATION!!!1one" conspiricy.

Basic summary is that the virus is established in a low education, poor area like Africa (Not making a race comment here, just establishing reasoning, k?), giving it the perfect social model to spread. Eventually, that virus spills over into other nations like a petri dish. Result? Pharma companies get rich selling treatment and withholding any potential cure.

Do I believe this? Yes and no. I seriously doubt it was an engineered virus (although I guess anything is possible), but I DO believe we'll start seeing the petri dish scenerio once the virus begins propagation in the more civil nations.

Area reaches "Critical Mass", cures / treatments are sold at rediclious prices to the Mid-Upper to High class. Then, the situation calms until another outbreak occurs, and the cycle starts over. Pharma companies get rich.

Yeah, I want to be a Virologist as my profession.
