Since I am in a deep thought mode...

***NOTE THIS IS NOT A BASH SWG THREAD, DO not, for the love of all that is GOOD in this world, go there***

Planetside, some argue, will be hurt by SWG if SWG releases first. The theory being SWG is going to be so massive as it will dwarf other games after it.

I would have agreed with you a year ago. Honestly I would have.
But recent chagnes and removal of many key draws to SWG seem to have cooled some of the desire to play the game. My MMORPG guild is a perfect example, they seem to be... well dissapointed in the current state SWG is now in.

SWG is now a near pure PvE game, and this has lead to a shift in those that would play it. I personally am going to play both, reguardless if there is a price deal for the games. But my heart will be with PS.

I think that with the Changes to SWG, and the fact that the two are compeletly different in both target audiences and play styles will lead to very little impact on either the player base of SWG or PS.

I would even go so far as to say that the current direction of SWG, an EQ in Space feel will HELP Planetside, Not only will it help PS but in a way, but will boost games such as DAOC and Shadowbane, seeing as all three promote PvP combat where as SWG is catering heavily towards the PvE crowd.

So as we near the launch of both SOE games, as well as the elusive launch of Shadowbane, one can only speculate as to which game iwll succeed in its expectations, which will fall short, and which shall surpass.

I for one see SWG doing extremely well, but not reaching the once astronomical number of 1,000,000 subscribers. I also feel that Shadowbane will fare well, but that PS is going to exceed its projected base, and reach in the 100,000+ range.

Your thoughts?

Yes it will hurt a bit but not as much as before they removed some of the elements that made SWG stand out ,without those I think only the hardcore SW fans will play, but I know in my clan people are split and have heard talk of people saying they cant decide what they want to play so they will let teh release date decide ;)

I think you're quite right Mr V. I mean, I know a LOT of people who wanted SWG for the PvP elements, and now they're already sick of it. But that's ok because just point them all towards Planetside; the PvP elements were what they wanted and Planetside is delivering it.

Shadowbane is point & click movements...I like to have total control of character. When SB started to be developed, I was excited....until they revealed it would be a point & click deal.....YUK! Passed up the chance for beta, not even interested!!

I personally am a HUGE (to the tune of collecting like 150 action figures over the course of my childhood) Star Wars fan, but I'm not even going to bother playing SWG. I've learned that 90% of Star Wars games suck, not to mention the way they're handling pretty much everything in SWG was a bad decision IMO. I can see why they made certain decisions to make their game play a certain way, but the way they want it to play...well, quite honestly...sucks hardcore like woah. I think Star Wars would have been a far, far, FAR better fit for an MMOFPS, guns don't historically work well in RPGs.

As for PS and SWG competing...nope, don't see it happening. The RPG junkies and the Star Wars nerds will get it, but all the real "gamers" who want an MMO experience will gravitate towards PS or SB. PS will get all the 1337 5h00t3rz and SB will get the power gamers.

Where have you guys been, they changed PlanetSide to a100% PvE game 3 weeks ago!
The game has been changed so that you join a side, and fight 2 other AI sides. That way the game can be more politically correct. Also, to help in this area, they have replaced all guns with paintballs, tanks with cardboard boxes, and air with. Turtles. The goal is to capture the enemys pie in the center of their base.

Lololololololololol

*J/K for those who dont know!*

Wow...

There are more to games than the difference between clicking to go somewhere, or holding down a button...

I think PS and SWG will attract very different types of gamers.

It's interesting considering they're both made by the same company. Anyone would think they were being marketed differently just to be sure their co-release didn't sink one or the other (well, sink PS let's be honest).

Duritz said it in his post.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what Sony was thinking.

Frankly, PS will IMHO do better than either SWG or SB. SWG has just been feature-slashed to death. As has been said, only the hardcore PvE freaks looking for their version of "something new" (right) or the SW ubernerds will go for it at this point.

As for SB... heh. Heh heh. Heheheheheheheheheheh. :p

Frankly, from what we've seen so far, it looks like PS will be the hit MMOG of the year. Even EVE has big issues which will hold it back, I suspect. If the devs deliver on what they've promised, I think a playerbase of 10,000 by years end is a very pessimistic outlook on the situation. Think more like 25-30k.

I think that Planetside will also attract a lot of non MMOG gamers (especialy FPS). I say this because I have never felt compelled to play a MMORPG except UO on free shards and I only did that for a few months. Many people I know are interested in Planetside because it is an MMOFPS. If I want to level up and use cool items then I have Morrowind, and if I want to do it with other people I play Neverwinter Nights. With Planetside I feel that finally a game has done something revolutionary enough for me to pay a monthly fee to play it.

I wish i were on the planetside dev team right now =/

Planetside is a -great- concept, nothing like any FPS or RPG before...

by mixing both...
1) FPS's have something to relate to, and can see their skill means something
2) RPG'ers, once accustomed to the FPS elements, will enjoy the fact they can 'advance' and play multiple different roles, and dont -have- to be the best shot out there to help take out a base

SWG.... i think there's just gonna be too many 'die-hard' fanatics, and i never liked previous SW-based games, they try to follow the world/storyline too much

Not in my book, I can't stand "point & click"! There are also plenty of good games out there, and SB isn't one of them!(In my opinion...of course) ;)

SWG, as a whole, is not complete...I know this...but you may not ask how. It has many problems and unless it is being created by a number of idiots, they will fix these problems...and release in november. Trust me. Or don't, i dont care.

When ever they release it is cool to me, as long as PS releases soon. hehe

PS looks like it is going to be an awesome MMOG. I have played other ones like EQ, AC and others but this one looks a lot more interesting. It's a game that doesn't require you to put hundreds of hours in on playing to get to the cool parts.

Stoic man u said it in mmorpgs i always almost seem to wanna quit before i get that uber peice of armor or that sweet wep. Yeah I play morrowind and when i want somethin uber i just download a quest that i can do to get soemthin cool. And like makedanad said I have the feeling that if the devs of the game know what they are doing they wont release the game til this summer IMO. HOPEFULLY the PS dev'rs will get the game out by later March that would be really nice.
