I just saw an article on this in wired. I don't know anything about it and I figured one of you could enlighten me. Aparently you have to get an IMEI code off of your phone and send it to some company along with some money. Does anyone know anything about this or and good cheap sites to get these unlocking codes from? All the ones I am finding are asking for about $40 and I don't want to spend that much.

Im not sure exactly what I mean, thats why I am asking. Unlocking a cell either allows it to use a SIM card from any provider, or connect to any providers network with your existing SIM card.
I doddn't got the issue, but I did rip the page out and will scan it in in a sec.

When you buy a cell from a company like cingular, they lock it so it only works with their service. Unlocking it allows the phone to either a. work on any cell phone netowork. or b. allow you to use any SIM card with your phone to connect to the network that SIM card is for. I can't figure out if it is a or b though.

What phone do you need unlocking?
You could probably pick up a data cable for $15 or so and get the relevant software from the internet.

Motorola v500
I did some research and I think you have to pay money for it. I already have a data cable for the phone so if I could use that it would own.

that article seems to refer almost exclusively to GSM phones which id assume because of its widespread use.

It's B.
Article says "Your phone is still a ball and chain, locked into one carrier's service."
Also says "You can unlock it and switch to any GSM Network Carrier".

It is B. Do you not have a nearby market or equivalent? 5 from a guy down my road.
The article reccomends www.cellphonehacks.com but I searched for a good 20 mins and didn't find any direct info :(
