Ivan reminded me of something in the google desktop thread. You weird South Westerners say 'soda'. Wheareas normal people say 'pop'. So, which american dialect is the best? I vote for midwest/Northeastern. Southern dialects lose by default.

edit: I should have made a poll :(

midwest wins by far, no funky accents or odd slang words (unlees you up north in WI or MN)

but i use both soda and pop and coke, Dads form WI moms from Iowa so i get it both

Everyone has an accent. You just can't hear it because it sounds so normal to you.

Nope, midwest is the new standard. Everyone else is weird.

Yeah. Midwesterners are actually proven to have the best diction and most accurate pronounciation of anyone, ever.

So, haha.

Because accents die out when everyone else around you doesn't have it.

Southerners don't say soda. Most southerners just say "Coke" refering to every carbonated beverage out there. I find it extremely annoying when people say "pop". Wierdos:(

I can't stand it when people call every brand of sodapop Coke. Coke is a brand name. It's like calling tissues Kleenexes.

If you come to my house and ask for Coke I'm going to give you coke. So you better mean you want Coke. I've also heard someone in NC refer to Pepsi as Pepsi Coke.

If you ask for that at my house I'm pouring you a glass of half Pepsi and half Coke. Then you can tell me how much you like it.

And let's all face it. We all use some short form of "Sodapop."

It would take me all day to list most of our oddities but fortunately someone already has...

Plus there's a bunch of other tidbits of info there...

I can imagine the list that Frag or Hezzy could compile!

Calling tissues kelenex is normal. So is calling bandages band-aids and geletin jello. Calling all soda coke however is just dumb.

Michigan's accent is fun.
Pop>Soda
Pail>Bucket
yep.

Michigan's accent also doubles as a Canadian accent. I said "eh" regularly before i even knew that Canadians said "eh".

Da Yooper talk is fun too. Half of the time you don't even know what they're saying :D

What part of Michigan? I'm in the SE bit of the lower Peninsula, and I have yet to hear people commonly say "pail" instead of bucket... huh.

In fact, my grandma either calls it "sohssa" or "la salsa".
