View Full Version : Is it illegal to own a human Skull?

Okay I have like a collection of stuff you'd find at like a museum I've just kind of collected over the years. I dunno why but its always kind of interested me. Anyway I decided to finally unpack it all even today even though its been 2 years after the move. I found this really old mahogony (spelling) shelf with glass panels over the front that you can lift. Easily from like the late 1800's. I got a friend of mine to get it up the stairs and while unpacking all the stuff he opens up a box and fucking flips out because its the human skull I own. He tells me its illegal but when I tell him I have a bunch more skulls of other animals (INCLUDING A BEAVER YARGH!!!) he tells me I'm insane.
Well anyway is it illegal to own a human skull that I did NOT claim from somone else on my own.
I should get some pics, need to find my old clunky piece of crap digital camera.

Good question.
i would have added the "you freak" but my kitten was propped up in my left arm while she tried to nurse on my left ear. THE LITTLE BRAT.
Yeah seriously, who was the person who used to belong to the skull?

I own a human skull too and I dont think its illegal unless you killed him and are caught. So don't get caught and your fine.

I don't know who's skull it is, I bought it from a store in NYC that got shut down a few weeks after I bought it for digging up people and taking bones and selling them... Owner is now serving 10-15 years I think.

I'd give your police department a call and explain the situation to them - tell them how you got it, and that you're concerned with the legality of owning such a thing.
Either that, or

My friend had the skull of one of his great grandfather's. Actually, it was all of his bones, and he kept them in a duffle bag.

Im 82% sure that owning a human skull without the recently departed or his families consent is illegal.
I agree with Trig, tell the bobbies down the local station if owning a skull is legal or not.
But for god sake dont tell them you have one, just in case ;)

What if the dude kept talking about dieing cause he was depressed and suicidal so one day you helped him and kept the skull but burned the rest of the body? I of course have never done this but a uh friend was curious if its legal then since the guy wanted to die anyway and you just sorta helped.

Euthanasia is only illegal as its often the wish from the dying to a loved one in private, so their no way to tell if the loved one had permission or not. Causes all sorts of problems.
It's no different from taking your socket wrench to a cat twitching in the road that you just run over.
Better to die sooner than later if your suffering.
Ok, this thread is now just weird and depressing. Time to pull the freaked-out asian card.

A medical cadavre used for scientific study/training is a lot different than a teenager having a skull on his shelf. ;)
And medical cadavres would not be owned by one person in particular, i imagine the institution would have ownership.

I wouldnt think it would be, they are all over museems and such, and yeah, cadavers, my dad brought the following to a "great american teach in" day thing throught the years:
1. A human heart
2. A human liver (one diseased, one good)
3. A human skull
4. A human brain.
You had best believe I poked every single one of em.
it was great.
Oh, and no, my dad is not some sort of weird necro-something or rather, he is indeed a anatomy prof.

i'm saying that the skull could be a relic of a medical study cadaver, and as such would be property of whatever institution performed research on/with it.
that would also mean they would have the right to dispose in whatever way they see fit.
if i were them? heck yeah, i'd clean up the skulls real nice and shiny-like and sell 'em on ebay.

Up for auction is this antique, real, human skull. The skull was purchased at auction from a dentist office. The skull has had the top cut and is held on with wire brads. When purchased, the skull had a candle on top, which has been removed, (see the dark spot on top). There seems to be a coating of some kind on the skull, probably to preserve it. There is still part of a tooth intact. This could be used for medical and dental study.
there's another one in much nicer condition (doesnt have the weird brown coating on it) going for $150 down the page a bit

If any of you watch the show "Mythbusters" on the discovery channel, one time they bought a skull for one of their experiments. So obviously its not illegal to own one. However, I'm not sure if you're allowed to own a skull purchased from a grave robber. You might want to check up on that.

My dad kinda lives in WV after a legal battle with a fucking retarted grad student who claimed that my dad was stealing his shit (which was indeed shit, thats why he was pissed, my dad was going to fail him)
Of COURSE USF dosent give a shit about being right, and promptly fires my dad in fear of "bad press"
Load of bull. So now I get to visit him one or two weeks a year. Yay. :/

yea mine was clearly not for medical testing as it has no marks on it or reconstructive matieral that I can see.
Secondly the animal skulls I found looks similar to the human skull while the store bought animal skulls look perfectly white and clean...

The only girls your gonna impress with one are the gothic nutter slut thats gonna slit her wrist the next time you talk to a girl without her express permission anyways, so why bother?

A human skull was found in this handbag, which had been left at a Nanaimo bus stop.
Nanaimo Mounties are investigating the discovery of a human skull in a lady's handbag left at a bus stop.
Police say the skull was brought to the RCMP detachment late Tuesday night by a woman who found the handbag.
The skull has been sent to a forensic anthropologist at Simon Fraser University for examination.
Constable Jack Eubank says it's not uncommon for people to stumble across ancient native burial sites.

It is not illegal to possess a human skull if it was obtained legally. If you were to steal the skull from a grave, or to receive property that you know to be stolen (no matter what property it is) it is illegal to possess. In the former instance the possession of the property came from an illegal source (a grave), while in the latter situation you also were in posession from an illegal source (somebody who stole it).
So, short answer is no.
