View Full Version : Planetside bans dail-up users

Remember how they said they weren't actually going to prohibit dial-up users?

Well guess what! All this BFR crap has made the game completely unplayable for dial-up users. Whenever I'm even close to one of these things, the game gets choppy. But since there are always 20-30 BFRs in any given area during combat now, I will literally go LD for minutes at a time. It's very annoying to have to sit at a door for 30-45 seconds before it opens. And then when it opens you run out and drop dead. Then you realize that you actually died 30 seconds ago when an enemy opened the door and saw you standing there like an idiot.

I've tried everything, even sniping, and guess what...I can watch a BFR in my scope simply fade out of existance because the connection can't even carry it's image to my computer.

Congratulations Developers! You've seemed to have found a way to cut the game's population without technically banning anyone! You simply make the game unplayable.

I guess I have two options: Upgrade to a much more expensive broadband, or quit. Unfortunately, the island I live on off of Japan doesn't have broadband.

No, they never guarenteed such a thing.

You could always play on the Test Server

if you know what your doing you could get some decent upgrades for not a bad price.

Is the China server online yet? And are you using it?
Because the 30-45 second door wait just sounds like massive ping because of the distance to your nearest server (West Coast America?).

Feel sorry for you dude. I had the same problem as my old computer was really OLD. All I can say is drop all your grapichs to really low and fight in the caves where bfr's cant get in.

I think it's testament to the efficiency of PlanetSide that you've been able to play it thus far with a 56k modem. Come back when the BFR novelty factor wears off ;)

The devs have already stated that they are aware of some frame rate issues connected with the BFR's and will be working to improve the situation. Hang in there - things may yet improve as they continue to fine tune things.

I have a similar problem even on cable. Whenever I get around a squad of BFRs my FPS drops below 5, even with my graphics on low/off. One night during mayhem it hit 1.8 FPS and I just logged in frustration.

I bit the bullet last night and ordered an ALIENWARE. Let's see what things look like when I can set my graphics on high in 2 weeks :groovy:

Plasma Purple w/Astral Blue cooling. Even my computer is a Vanu :D

You didn't just bite the bullet, you swallowed the Marine that fired it.

/cancel subscriptioni'm sorry /sarcasm

first you live increadibly far away from the servers so ping is going to be high anyway.
second noboday ever said this games was supposed to be playable on dail-up
thirdly i played on dial-up for a while(inc. beta), it was horrible then and i would have stoped playing, i woudl lag beind by several minutes at times

fourthly Majik you got duped, by buying an AW you payed way to much no matter what you got there. AW sometimes adds more than 2k to the price of building your own.

Does anyone know where the east coast server is.. because I use a DSL connection and only get problems when my dad is on his computer

BTW Why buy an alienware when you can custom make ur own cpu???

sorry Rbstr, you already mentioned that

i play on dial-up and i do fine when they have 3 bfrs at the most and about 6 people then i start to feel the pain of ping

I play from Japan, ping is a little high, but it's playable. If you don't have broadband yet, check out either Yahoo-Japan or AOL-Japan, they are offering Broadband all over Japan now (and at a really cheap price).

Actually, by listing 56k in their minimum requirements they pretty much do. Even at release 56k was nearly impossible to play (I tried) and they did a disservice to the paying customers by pretending the game was playable like that. Why would they do that? I played for a few months on 56k, was able to play enough to know I really enjoyed it and ended up getting cable internet and upgrading my computer. Stupid people like me who were willingly duped, that's why they did that.

As with all minimum requirements: Don't expect a smooth ride :(

i've just recently gotten cable and it is a huge difference over dialup. but dialup wasn't THAT bad. i mean as long as i stayed away from tower fights and all....

GAH!! whatever you win, dialup is very poor in PS :(

What a fool, I have a custom computer that cost far less and is much better. You got screwed.

You have to be absolutely fucking retarded to try to play PlanetSide on a 56k.

They say it will RUN on a 56k connection, then never said it would run WELL.
