Ok, so here's my problem:

My friend wanted to listen to my IPod, and I thought "Ok, he can't break it by listening to it."...but apparently, he did. There's a lock icon in the upper part of the screen, and the Hold button does nothing to change it, I've tried to reset it as well, but the controls are unresponsive. Anyone that has an IPod and has has similar troubles...help?

yes, thats quite common, the iPod freeze...

Sumtiems it happens, let it like that, ti will eventually run out fo battery, when ti does recharge it and then it should be fine, if it happens again link it to PC and formatt it, then put all ur music back again and voila

I did let it run out of battery, stuck it in this morning and the icon is still there. How do I format it from the PC?

go to iPod on the start menu, then click system software whatever, then updater, then in there click reformat.

have u reformatted yet?

That always solves most problems unless they are actually physical in origin...

Are you on the newest generation version? Reformatting should fix the problem. Are you sure theres not something keeping the hold thing switched from the inside?

if its a software problem, you can *probably* fix it by holding down Menu and Select for about 10 seconds until the iPod resets itself.

I have a secrets of the iPod book, plug in your ipod and reformat it, or even update the software might in a sense work. Ill look through my iPod book later and see if I can find anything that would help.

That's comforting...

Anyway, the thing is when I try to reformat it from my PC, it says it can't lock it because something else is using it. I don't know wtf that means, but I can't click "Reformat".

Like pulling fucking teeth, I swear. A note to any future BestBuy consumers, SAVE THE RECEIPT FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! Even with the credit card they wouldn't accept it, and they said I'd have to call Apple. That'll wait a week...who had that iPod help book? Biohazard? Is there anything in there about poping the top off the iPod and re-aligning it? I just noticed there's a bubble on the left side between the white and the silver of the case, I figure if I take the white off and place it straight on, it'll recognize the hold button.
