It may not be long before drivers of the Hummer - the steroid-laden sports utility vehicle favoured by the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger - get a fright when they look in their rear-view mirrors.

Trailing them will be a set of wheels even bigger, greedier and more eye-catching than their own.

The US Army and the Chicago manufacturer International Truck and Engine Corporation are jointly developing a replacement for the venerable Humvee troop transporter, from which the Hummer was derived.

Last week, prototypes of the so-called "Smart Truck 3" were displayed at a trade show in Las Vegas. The army also wants the vehicles to be marketed to other customers such as government agencies or regular Joes who only feel right using a stepladder to get behind thewheel.

The commercial version would not have the electronics designed to detect anthrax, the Kevlar armouring on the underside, the night-vision cameras and the 25-inch LCD touch-screen computer monitors. But it would be just as big.

The Smart Truck would weigh in at no less than 8,000lb, compared to nearly 5,000lb for the second generation Hummer, the H2. It would be about 3in higher than the Hummer and 4ft longer, but its fuel consumption would be lower.

However, the era of bigger-is-always-better may have passed, even in size-obsessed America. Sales of the Hummer in the first 10 months of this year were down by a fifth compared to 2003

The Humvee is a classic tho, still doesn't beat good ol' British Land Rovers tho, fraction fo the price, better vehicle.

lmao!

you serious, that must be civilian version cause that looks flimsy...also the shape and length do not make it very good for obstacles....hmmm

Wtf? If that's going to replace the hummer the US army better change it's motto to "Fo shizzle my nizzle" and add to the armement diamond chains and lowriders.

yeah it's to streamlined, i could have sworn i sa a HC thingy on the hummer/jeep/new thingy it did all sorts of cool stuff

it sure seems interesting but I still believe its long cuboid shape is not practical, especially for combat situations, its too large, theres no point in saying its practical for troop transport or for item transport because there are vehicles that already do that, this is meant to fill another role which seriously, this shape seems really impractical, its silhouette would be huge...too much of a target IMO...the hummer is big agreed but that is mroe rpactical and agile...

err this design seems reall awkward to me.

edit: also, here's why the side rail looks flimsy... it folds out in sections.

after looking at high res its clear that it is definetly a civilian version, look at it, body work is some plain metal, underside exposed, tires are not all purpose, lights of that sort would not be convinient in combat scenario, etc

pfft I await to see the military version but so far it looks like crap to me.

remember that that truck is a prototype, not a production model

those lights look perfect for a conflict situation. talk about redundancy...

anyway, i found the interior of the original smart truck:

no, because we still have the SA80/L85.

you know the HMMV has a 6 litre (or 6.5litre) V8 and yet is limited to only 50mph, fucking rediculous.

Baneblade

130 kph is 80.73 mph. Slightly slower than the Humvee.

seeing as how it was from several months ago and I don't keep mags that long and I don't have a scanner not likely but it may have ended up under my bed and I can scan it when I go to my dads assuming I can find it
