After looking a few topics about Planetside's dropping population, and people suggesting that advertising could be a solution, I have decided to start a thread about it. What sort of advert would it be? How would it show off Planetside's massiveness and it's range of vehicles and weaponry? It was a miracle I found Planetside, there is no advertisement. Boasting Planetside from different websites or on popular television stations would certainly attract more people to it, because it's a unique and good kinda game. It's a shame what's happening to the population. If advertising is something SOE just aren't going to do, they should bring something into the game that would bring back old players that left for other games (WoW, Hl2, Halo2, EQ2, etc). If we couldn't massively boast the population, we can try and maintain and maybe get back old players with something new and exciting. I'm not talking a new vehicle or a new weapon. Those kind of things become stale in quite a few days. I'm talking a new element to the game. Merits are a good idea. By the time someone gets to CR5 BR20 they've pretty much have sucked out everything the game has to offer, and maybe thats why the population is dropping.

Two things to discuss here:
How would SOE advertise Planetside?
What could be added to the game to not only attract old and maybe new players, but keep them stuck in?

I doubt SOE would advertise PlanetSide. EQ2 is now their flagship game, so their budget will away go to them . It costs millions of dollars to make TV commercials, and SOE wouldnt be able to afford it.

When there is a new expansion, PS will get advertising. Until then, the game is too old and too niche to be worth the expenses it would cost SOE to put up advertising for it more than it already has. Expansions are great times to have new advertisements because magazines etc will want to run the ads more, as it's an upcoming product, and it'll be new to everyone, rather than just saying "Remember Planetside? Well it's a bit different. But, come on, remember Planetside?" as an ad simply talking about the game as is would.

But as I also said in the other thread, Planetside is getting more advertisement right now than it has in a long time (since Core Combat). Aftershock put a new box on the shelves and had new online ads showing off the mechs. We are already seeing the tail end of the results from increased marketing for this game.

Sony often do promotions at expansion time as well.

Biggest Planetside advertisement I saw was when SOE would beg the EQ people to try PS beta.

When there is a new expansion, PS will get advertising.

Thats where I think they shot themselves in the foot. Core Combat is a great place to have infantry battles. But you needed a reason other than that to go down there. Modules were not enough, plus if you really wanted one, just steal it from someone who did all the work already. No BEP or CEP so why go. Problem is, it was rushed an not completely thought through.

When the outcry over Core Combat occured, I'm sure it freaked a lot of management. So, they focus thier attention to improving the core game...something they should have done before the expansion and they ignore (rather than fix) CC. They should have fixed both (basic elements, bugs, etc) at the same time...and ignored the whiners who said no more expansions. Once they took care of some basic game issues and fixed core combat, they should have went full steam for the next expansion. Which should be either naval or space (two most requested, hence give them the pickle). Instead they were too focused on the core game and enhancing it. After the Battle Islands and CEP/BEP for CC, I thought they should have stopped there and went for another expansion. But the best laid plans...

In thier defense, SOE is charting new ground with this game and are entitled to some big blunders. It may survive it may fail, only time will tell. But mistakes were made and learned from. With the MMORPG market getting very competitive and other FPS on smaller scales as well. I'm sure another company or even SOE is watching. Another company can come out with another game with Planetside's scale and not make the same mistakes. Or SOE, could learn what they did wrong and perhaps come out with another one down the road.

Why would they? Simple, Planetside is a succesful game. C'mon, thier charging a monthly subscription for a FPS game and have lasted despite thier blunders. That says alot. Furthermore, there are plenty of clues laying around that PS is kind of a test in a new arena. Just by what they throw out at us (BFR's, joystick support, little advertising, etc.) tells me they may have some other plans for the future.

...I will now get off my soap box.
