View Full Version : How do you feel on Christmas?

Figured I'd get the consensus around here.

For some, Christmas is one of the best times of year, their family and friends all together and what not. Gifts and good food and so-on. General Christmas cheer.

For others it's kind of a bummer. Like valentines day is a bummer for poeple who don't have someone to share it with. Or like thanksgiving day is a downer for people who eat too much turkey and get horrible shits for the rest of the week. (Limey's need not apply)

I'm just curious...

For me it's kind of a bummer this year. We are going to mexico. Sure, that's all fun and great, but I dont particularily find mexico enjoyable, especially when I am cooped up in some resort with my parents. I'd rather be able to stay around, spend time with friends, and generally relax. My parent's idea of relaxation is some holiday in an exotic land where you can get all sorts of diseases and you always shred your feet up on something in the water.

This is going to be a weird Christmas for me.

I'm in a religious transitionary period. I've confirmed that I personally do not believe the things that I used to believe (i.e. that Jesus is the savior of the people), and therefore don't feel the need to celebrate his birth as I have done in previous years.

However, I'm spending this Christmas with my in-laws (whee!) who will undoubtedly make us go to midnight mass. I can appreciate the belief system of others, and I'll go to church, hell maybe it'll open my eyes to something I missed before. Who knows.

Usually Christmas time is a pretty sweet time. My family goes all out. My mom still thinks we're little, and likes to give us a bunch of presents to unwrap, and she makes us all take turns opening things so she doesn't miss anyone's reaction. Usually we all unwrap our stuff and then abscond to try on our new clothes and leave the wrapping paper all over the family room floor. My mom's cool and gives us about 30 seconds to come back downstairs and clean it up. Then me and my two sisters fight over the hot water because we all have to shower and be ready to meet my aunt, uncle and cousins to go to church. Then we go to church, come home, and fight over who has to pick up my grandparents. Then I end up going because I'm a sucker, and we spend the rest of the day eating too much and playing Italian cards.

Good times :)

Edit: I forgot to mention that my family has a tradition of having a massive fight each holiday. My mom gets really stressed out and the fight will start with something like this:

MOM: "Patty, can you go to Tops to get some mozzarella?"
PATTY: "Hang on, I have to shower."
MOM: "Patty JUST GO!"
PATTY: "Mom! Relax! I have to shower first then I'll go!"
MOM: "YOU UNGRATEFUL BITCH! JUST GO!"

It's to the point now that we'll just burst out laughing and that'll piss my mom off more, but ohhh it's funny. My family is nuts.

I can't wait to see how John's family does it, they're so Norman Rockwell. I bet they'll have like, a singalong in front of the piano. I love what I'm marrying into

It's diversity time, kids!

On Christmas Eve (Nochebuena- "Good Night") everybody goes to one of my relative's houses where we partake in the perennial Cuban feast: pork in the massive oven box, rice and beans, cassava, and plantains- no vegetables in sight.

This persists until about 12 AM when we must return to base, at which point we are promptly told to go to sleep.

We wake up and Santa has left us presents under the tree

Sometimes when I hear dad moving around the gifts I go help him: my littler brother has ordered about 10,000 GI Joe action figures this year (thanks a lot, FenslerFilm).

We go open them, I feign suprise next morning for the one family member who still believes in Santa, and we spend the rest of the day all happy playing with our newfangled crap. We really should go to Church, but the parents have been lax about it- they are busy on Sundays which leads them to not want to go on Christmas Day.

So, how do I feel? Not bad at all, happy. Relaxed, mostly, because school is over.

This christmas might become weird... I have fallen in love before even leaving my old girlfriend. Me being a coward I might end up with two girlfriends till I can work up the courage to leave the current one :ugh:.

Pics of the new girl to come.

It used to be a good time until I joined the military. Last year I couldn't afford the plane ticket, because my leave didn't get approved until 1 WEEK before I wanted to leave. I ended up waiting to go home until January. Christmas will once again be a lonely time.

well for starters, i'm jewish, so for me its chanukah but this year, right now, i'm spending chanukah at school studying for finals, instead of home with my family....so i guess this year it kinda sucks. but when it falls around the same time as christmas does, i'm home and then its fun.....overall this time of year isn't that good for my family...we've lost a few important family members during this general time so we don't look at it like we did...we make the best of it though...

best part about christmas for me is the time i spend with my dad. i usually feel pretty good on christmas as long as me, my dad, and my brother hang out. a few years ago my brother couldn't make it for christmas. it was like an enormous piece of Christmas was missing. the three of us couldn't make fun of my aunt Jude (she used to do lots of drugs and is really fucking stupid) and just watch as our wit flies over her head. it sucked.

i'm glad it'll be the whole family this year. My brother, my dad, me, my uncle Cal and my uncle Thad, and my papa??? it's gonna be great. :)

and, yeah.. hamma. i'll admit, christmas did seem more fun when i was a kid. everything seemed a lot more impressive.

Ronery. :(

The holidays thus far have sucked without that Devil woman I depended on for 6 years. Only thing i'm looking forward to is dinner with my dad's family on the 19th. I've been 'uninvited' from the trip to Big Bear my mom's side is planning. Long story, dont ask.

I'll probably work throughout the holidays. God knows I need the money for a car :o

Christmas, Christmas, Christmas. Hrmmm. I refuse to accept that Christmas is near. It just doesn't feel like mid-winter. It's too mild (thats between 5-10C by the way) to be Christmas.

I mostly expect this one to be a great improvement over last years, but still mildly crap. Why? Last year I was stuck at my mum's house. Granted, my mum loves me, and tries to be nice. But she has the most boring house ever. I can't stand it here. Why? I don't know, it's just.. boring. The family is boring, I'm the only person between 9-40 years of age. It sucks the big one. Last year, people came round, opened some gifts, and we ate a fucking Tofurkey. So Christmassy.

This year I'm off to my aunt's place with my Dad. I love my Dad and my Aunt and Uncle. They're 1337. I've really struggled to think of anything present wise for anyone. Annoying. I suppose it'll be fun watching Family Guy after eating a large meal. Oh, speaking of which, I've decided to fast before Christmas, eating only Fruit, Crackers, and drinking (assorted).

Should I post this, and keep you updated each day? Merh.

I'm taking my girlfriend to see a festive film on Monday, and then I'm going to take her on a little walk through my village, and take her to this little caf place. I suppose that'll fill my quota of Christmas cheer.

To be honest, I'm looking forward to New Years a whole lot more. Drinking properly, with friends and family. Fun-o.

Meh - it feels like any other day now. I've kinda lost my excitement for it over the years.

I'm mainly worried about the obligation to buy gifts and the lack of money to do so this year. Plus not to mention because everyone is on winter break which means hardly any friends to have fun with. Very ronery (thanks squeekster).

Usually my christmas sprit is rekindled by decorating the house -- but I cant, the house is under the final stages of a little reconstruction (we added onto the house) but it should be done within 2 weeks. So things are really plain.

Oy - I feel like Strong Sad right now.

I'll be working Christmas weekend as I often have over the years. Still get to enjoy time with the family between shifts. Took me lotsa years to realize the best gift I have every year is family and friends to share it with.

Not as good as when i was a kid obviously. But I guess pretty good. I always feel relaxed and glad I don't have to go to school for a while. Only thing is, my family is pretty much down to just my parents and my aunt/uncle and their 2 kids, since all my grandparents are either gone or alienated and my great uncle passed this summer. It'd be nice to have more interesting holidays, but at least my best friend is coming up from NC this weekend. Oh and I'm going to Myrtle Beach day after Christmas.

Christmas sucks. My familiy gets all busy and tries to clean the house up. No matter how mych I help it still was never enough and the day before Christmas is always so tense and everyones yelling and screaming about something. I just sit in my room listening to loud music to drown out there voices.

Christmas just isn't what it used to be. I rarely look forward to christmas. I don't really need anything at the moment, so I don't even know what presents to get. No doubt my parents will be lazy bastards and just stay in over the christmas period.

Well, since I'm Atheist, I don't get anything for Christmas. I still get my parents and my friend's gifts, but I tell them not to get me anything, as I'm Atheist. So I'm pretty neutral about Christmas - nothing really special for me.

And, since I don't have a girlfriend, I don't have to spend that much. I spent about $200 this year on my parents, and $160 on my four friends.

I see Christmas as the only time of the year where everyone just can go "oh fucked it" and just finally relax, see old friends and family and have a good time. I spend three days before Christmas Eve skiing up at Sugarloaf with my team. For me Christmas has lost it's charm now that I'm a bitter 16 year old so I just spend Christmas eve part with my family and then Christmas morning until about 10. Then I call it a few friends and just head up to Sugarloaf or Sunday River for a half day of skiing. Then more skiing afterwards, more skiing, always skiing!

Don't feel any different. People want to get me things so they expect something in return. People think I should be nicer this time of year. Saw on the news the other day how a few schools' christmas plays excluded the Christian reference parts obviously not knowing that Christmas IS JESUS'S DAMN BIRTHDAY!
