In the SOE game "Everquest," there is an afk system, where you can simply type in /afk in the chat box, and you have an away message when someone sends a message to you. I was wondering if something like this would appear in Planetside...so when diner is served, you have a way of letting everyone around you know that you'll be back later.

If you have any information on this, please tell me!

so no one really knows about the afk thing? I was also wondering about footsteps, can you hear people walking around...or is it like a silent battlefield?

Since there is a silent run implant, I would go with yes on this one. :D

now as the servers will have a max player limit if ur going afk for any longer than 5-10 mins u should prolyl log off and let some 1 else have your space

not only will ppl hear your footsteps.... they will also give away ytou location on a radar to anyone with the amplify sound implant in unless of course you have the silent run option.

hmmm.... i doubt that if PS is going to be thosands of ppl to one server that such a thing would pose a problem....

no but judging by the amount of interest in the game 2500 people per server maybe (complete guess)

2500 will be full at peak times.....why should people have to sit there looking at "the server u are trying to connect to is full try again later or play on another server" beacause some fool has decided that hes going to leave his planetside account logged on and in the sanctuary.

they could implement a system that auto kicks you from the server if u dont perform any action within a certain time limit

lol madcat, it doesn't work that way. there is no max, it just stretches the server. If the "max" was 3000 per server, 3 american servers. thats 9000 people at a time in america, plus anyone else who wants to play here? maybey from canada ect. hehe it's not really a limit. The only limit I've seen in an MMO game was in DAoC when they had a PvP test server up and they didn't want to stretch it yet fully. 3000 max there, and that was a game with about 12ish servers, prolly more. PS will have around 5 servers right? maybye 6, to start at least. If they were to cap their servers you would have alot of anrgy people:) You pay 10-15 a month to have a spot on the server. "Sorry were full thanks for your money" isn't the best line to give to your customer.

PS: Horrible grammar back there sorry its late haha.

LOL this isnt a game of TFC, or Quake...

The servers have no maximums. its a persistent world.

Yes there prolly will be an AFK facility - I think they are copying large chunks of the EverQuest chat system (makes sense, why re-invent the wheel...)

There will be safe zones, and you can betcha bottom dollar that you'll see plenty of peeps sitting around AFK.

Some peeps wont log off often... It happens in MMOs today and I think it will happen in PS too. People like to be contactable, in game - email an stuff is not accessible to some peeps, so they will go AFK and dont have to load up the game when they come back. They might not want to miss out on outfit chat, or may want to read what other people have said to them whilst they where afk, which is all logged on their screen. Theres no need to go out an check IRC :)

Hmmm this raises an interesting question, what would happen if a member of your squad is afk in your base (which is well defended/not attacked so he doesn't die). If you guys cap a base does he share the BEPs anyway?

To use afk type:

/afk

yes you can hear foot steps. Running footsteps are loudest, andif you crouch and walk you are pretty quite.

you can't actually here someone run. you have a radar on your screen which shows you that you have enemy units nearby. if you have the silent run implant, it just means that the enemy with the implant does not show up on your radar.

to those who said that you must log off and that afk is unlikely must not play many MMOG's :) Trust me people with like a gig of ram and a fast cpu that dont need to restart too much will take advantage of the situation. Plus like someone said. Stuff comes up and u dont always wanna completely close to game to go away for a while.

im sure u can hear footsteps. sound must play some role in the game considering some guns have silencers on them.
