What is it? I've seen some stuff about it, and the new comic
(by martyr (c) (r) TM 2004 all rights reserved)
is it like a darklight block?

The Phantasm is supposed to be a cloaked helicopter that has something like 3 12mm chainguns that can hold 4 or 5 people.

Woh! 4-5 people? I thought it was going to be a one-man scouting aircraft!

definition of Phantasm means like dream or fantasy or quite possible ghost, invisible something flying in the air sounds about right to me.

HOLY SHIT no wonder martyr was crying...
did the devs say there gonna release it?
OMG if we got an army of those we could stealth a base to death
would have to be weak though, on account its cloaked
and its open air vehicle

Nah
They said more or less that it's not going to be even worked on for a LONG time.
Right now, the sum total of it exists on a word document, and a handdrawn sketch.
Which in my opinion, is a good that it stay there.

Last I heard, it could carry half a squad (in any armour, bar MAX), and had one 12mm chaingun on it's underbelly, for clearing light resistance in the LZ.

Well unless the Phantasm's supposed to be a Sanctuary prop it's not finished yet.

Explain to me how you counter a flying invisible troop transport
With invisible, flyin', motherfuckin' piranhas!
But seriously, I doubt it's going to cloak. Or if it does it'll only cloak if all passengers are cloakers or something. Or the cloak will be imperfect enough that all the cloak really does is prevent lock-on weaponry from picking it up. We don't know the whole story though, so it's likely that there's a method to it that makes it seem better than it sounds on the surface.
Or maybe an invisible troop transport that can fly at high altitudes and be totally undetectable won't make the Galaxy obsolete and etc etc. Who knows at this point.
edit: FatalLight needs to change his signature to stop reminding me of Starcraft: Ghost. Either that or Blizzard needs to hurry up and get whoever took over after Nihilistic to finish the damn game already.

Even if it DIDN'T cloak
Do you realize how screwed up this would be when considering the Galaxy?
Two of these vehicles could field an entire squad.
Infiltrators are generally certed in AdvHack, and MAXes
This would destroy the Galaxy, Sunderer, and Deliverer in one patch.
We have the Liberator, it may not be a massive troop transport, but it does the job.
Phantasm, especially after how badly the community took BFRs, would hurt this game severely.

Considering the amount of people who want a flying Phantasm, and then add how many people want another use for infiltrators and I think the community would generally like the idea of the Phantasm.
The difference between the Galaxy and Phantasm would be size, strength, and defence. So if it didn't cloak it'd die before it got anywhere near a hot zone. If it did cloak, I'd like to think the devs would add something to the Skyguard that would show it on radar and give some clues as to where a phantasm would be.
Of course it coudl just go down the old route of the slower it is, the better its cloaked so at 100% speed you could see it normally :)

Haha I can't wait either :'( it's like Big Ape Studios or something that too over and I haven't heard of a release date :(
Sorry to go off topic, to continue...
I think that they might make the AA units have some sort of darklight, I'm not too sure how that would work tho...

Everything hurts the game. The entire game is filled with whinging retards. SOE made this game for intelligent people and sold it to morons. There's complaints when there's a lack of new content, there's complaints about every piece of new content that comes in, every bugfix, every buff, every nerf, every change of any kind. Heck even the new icon got complaints. PS has the most hopelessly angsty and pathetic community ever devised and if there should ever be a cull of humanity, I'd strongly suggest they start here.

TB,
The question is, don't we have more important things to do than adding some new Vehicle, Map, Equipment.
For instance, addressing Weak lattice structure, weak game performance, ugly/confusing interface, and lack of new player support.
Just an overall lack of polished profesional work.
Development time is Subscription money, and Dev PayRoll.
Is it really that important to waste 4 months for you to fondle a "New Toy", as apposed to actually fixing the game?
TotalBiscuit
2004-12-24, 02:23 PM
Yes.. Because if you do that people will complain.
The Devs are in an absolute no-win situation. No matter what they do, people complain. They spend a month tweaking performance, they get 'OMFG my performance was fine before, I want new content!' and 'You wrecked my performance with your latest patch!'.
I'd expect more common sense from one such as yourself Grey. Have the Official Forums finally eaten your mind? The Phatasm would not take 4 months of Dev time. Nothing has, even with BFRs in development new features were still being released.

Usually 3 months creation, 1 month balance
In that respect, BFRs have easily taken up 5-6 months.
Lodestar alone took up 3 months.
While they might not get 'nothing else' done, it sure ends up being little much else.

If there's anything worse than a feature that takes too long it's a feature that's rushed.
The most annoying thing is that everything always gets screwed up by the players. They made the BFRs for intelligent people and morons certed them. The problems came with BFR cowardice, which in turn encouraged herding for safety, which in turn made destroying BFRs in any significant numbers nigh on impossible. People also refused to accept new tactical possibilities, heck even the outfit that practically wrote the book on killing BFRs quit the game over em.

One of the 666th Devil Dogs apparently visited Sporkfire on his way to a relative's house. Because of his interest, and all the 666th have contributed, he showed him some stuff, including the model of the Phantom.
This was verified a month or so back during the debate about the 666 merit commendation. Spork mentioned someone from the Devil Dogs meeting him.

And has everyone forgotten the ability for the riders in tha phantasm to fire there weapons from it? I heard this a while ago during a atd and nothing since.

I've only heard that that feature was requested not that it will be in the phantasm (then again I only heard the phantasm would be a flying wraith o_O)

As FatalLight said, that was an idea suggested by the players, but Spork and Co. said that it'd take too much work, because the engine isn't designed to handle such ideas. The players posted pictures of the troop transport from Star Wars, with all the clone troopers shooting out, and all they others splurged and shouted "OMG YES LOL THAT NEEDS IN!"2!". Unfortunately, the PS engine just won't do it.

Ok, see that makes sense. I had heard somewhere that the devs had wished to make buggies and atv's open cockpits, so the riders could take damage, and the same physics that would make that work, were needed for the phantasm shooting out project. I could have sworn that it was a dev or something that spoke about the shooting out, but you are probably correct as the engine doesnt support that as far as i know. Plus the balance of it would be ridiculous: 4 Strikers or 4 Phoenix firing on TS in tandem= all other aircraft pwned. Plus that doesnt really fit the idea of a cloaked aircraft.

Planetside's biggest problem like mentioned before is morons or people the have no common sence, not to sound like one but what they should do is somehow make things take a little bit more skill. If it is a mass kill machine why not make them have to practise to use it properly not these thing's where you can get in and kill 100 people on your first day. Also some how bring tatics back, I know that will never happen but it would somehow bring something good into the game. And with the Phantasm make it so not every person could just go cert and use it for getting their squad to a place fast and easy but make it so a skilled person could keep it cloaked and at a good speed.
