"The recently discovered asteroid 2004 MN4 is currently listed as having a 1/233 chance of hitting the Earth. It is 420 m across and if it strikes the Earth it will release an energy of 1,900 Megatons of TNT (the largest nuclear weapon ever detonated, Tsar Bomba had a yield of only 50 Megatons). It is also the only asteroid that currently has a Torino scale value of 2." So, in summary, there's a 1-in-233 chance of the worst disaster in recorded history happening on April 13, 2029, and a 232-in-233 chance of nothing happening. Have a nice day! Update: 12/24 22:14 GMT by M: The rock is now rated a 4 on the Torino scale, or a 1-in-62 chance of impact.

It's now up to a 1-in-42 chance... http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/2004mn4.html

24 years until possible impact.

April 13, 2029 (Estimated date of impact) is also a Friday the 13th!

PAGING BRUCE WILLIS!

I hate stuff like this. Such a downer.

Even if I believed they can actually extrapolate all those specific facts and statistics, I'm sure they'll figure something out to either alter it's path or flat out destroy it long before it comes near Earth.

If humanity has 25 years to try and stop it, and we can't... we deserve to get hit by it.

Yes, we know. It wont hit, and if on the highly off-chance ithat it does align with earth and will hit, we'll have already divised a plan to blow the thing to fucking hell.

They've got plenty of time to sort it out, and even if they don't, we've all got to die sometime!

Humanity is too young to die at the hands of some asshole asteriod. All I can say is that I hope I'm on the other side of the planet if it hits.

If we use the missle defense system, we'll lauch this pissy little rocket too weak to do anything, and it'll miss too.

Our best bet is a high-level nuclear explosion.

Or Bruce Willis.

also: how exactly do you estimate the explosive power of something you're seeing in a telescope, millions upon millons of miles away? what if it has the physical properties of a nerf ball? For all we know it might just smash into canada, smush some trees and wildlife like a goddamn 18 wheeler, and bounce right back off.

Yeah, I like my scientific reasoning alot better then those *******.

Right. Then you have to worry about the dust. And may God help us if it hits a major forest. Can we say "Nuclear winter"?

its not a "Nuclear" winter if its not from radiating smog. if its just dust, itll be just an uber dark winter.

well I plan on finding out where exactly it will hit, then camping there for a couple weeks up until the 13th, if it doesnt hit, it doesnt hit, but if it does....woot, going down in a blaze of glory (or stupidity) is much better than starving to death while being trampled by a million screaming children in the post apocolyptic hellhole that earth will be

then again I could go buy a supervault and take my town into it with me then emerge in 40 years and kick some ass...
