French 'spiderman' mounts world's tallest building
TAIPEI (AFP) - Frenchman Alain Robert defied bad weather to set a personal record by climbing the world's tallest building, Taipei 101, in four hours.
Robert, dubbed the "French Spiderman" for climbing skyscrapers, set off for Taipei 101 around 10:00 am (0200 GMT) as light rain fell and strong winds lashed the building on the Christmas day.
"This is so amazing," Robert exclaimed before taking on the final 60-meter (yard) top of the building.
He reached the top of the 508-meter (1,676 feet) building shortly before 2:00 pm and waved to hundreds of people cheering and applauding on the ground.
Robert has left his prints on many of the world's landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Empire State Building in New York, the Sydney Opera House and the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur.
Taipei's skyline became home to the world's tallest building on October 17 when the 101-storey tower was topped out.
The skyscraper will be completed at the end of this month and will open to the public in the first quarter of 2005.
The structure, Taiwan's largest engineering project yet, cost 58 billion Taiwan dollars (1.8 billion US). It was financed by the Taipei Financial Center Corp., which includes China Development Industrial Bank and Cathay life Insurance Co.
Last year a five-storey shopping mall featuring brand-name fashion houses opened at the base of the skyscraper.
