View Full Version : 20gig iPod vs. 5gig iRiver

Ahhhhh the great dilemma! To fall prey to apple and purchase a 20gig iPod for 379 canadian dollars or purchase a fine iRiver that sadly only has 5gig for the same price...
I have about 4-5 days to decide wich I will be purchasing.
Let the argument begin!

What do you need 20 gigs of hard drive space for that 5 gigs won't suffice? Honestly, IMO disk space isn't really that big of an issue unless you have a LOT of mp3s. That said, I can't comment on the features of the iPod or the iRiver since I know nothing about them. Just don't obsess over the hard drive space differences.

Well before my dear computer went kaput on my ass I had about 4gigs of music and I was just starting to have the music I wanted on my computer...
But my main issue isn't space but the size (I do alot of biking too big is a problem), battery life, resistance (getting dropped etc.) and features. Now by features I don't mean gadgets like camera, sound recorder, etc. I mean features I'm going to care about, if I wanted a camera or a sound recorder I'd buy one.

The 20gb irivers shouldnt be that much more. You could probably hop down to the states and get one cheaper. They are quite durable.

Get the ipod 20gb for the following reasons:
1. Fits better in your pocket
2. Looks better
3. Uses Itunes (not sure if iriver does) but Itunes is a great way to get your music and organize it
4. Thumb pad (wheel) thingamabob is great for browsing though your music
5. You can be a conformist like the rest of us
6. Great with the arm strap if you are a runner or use it when you work out
7. Has a Bose attachment (see www.ipod.com) for more info
8. Comes with really good ear peaces (that rival headphones)
9. Repeat steps 1-8

10. Durable as fuck. Some guy did tests and you can go 25 MPH without breaking the faceplate and the ipod continued to function.

or, you could get a 6gb iPod mini, i have a 4gb model, and i love it, so small, and the colours are also nice (mine is green). the 6GB would be cheaper than the 20GB ipod and 5gb iriver. but in this case, i say go with the iPod.

You think I'd pay for songs I can acquire for free? iTunes isnt bright enough to realise ripped songs 99% of the time.
Looks like I'm gonna go for the iPod!

I was having trouble deciding what to buy myself - this article helped me decide which to get (although it doesn't have the Iriver 5gb listed). It also has a few different choices, if you haven't seen them before. I personally bought the Rio Karma and so far it's been a great player. Hope this helps a little.

To compare the MSRP of both the 20GB iPod and iRiver:
iPod ($299.00): http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71908/wo/vl4ZFS5KdlwH2UIwag023GuljRA/0.0.11.1.0.6.13.0.0.1.3.0.5.1.0.1.1.0
iRiver (299.99): http://www.iriveramerica.com/prod/hd/h320.aspx
The iRiver uses USB, the iPod uses firewire.
The iRiver has a colour screen, the iPod does not.
The iRiver can display jpegs, bitmaps, and apparently videos aswell, the iPod does not.
The iRiver also comes with a carrying case, and a built-in FM tuner, the iPod does not.
I would say the best value is the iriver.

ACK!?!?! What the fuck!?
I converted the prices for both items to Canadian dollars and it would come to me cheaper to order online the 20gig iRiver... Radioshack here charges 370$ for 5 gig iRiver, and the same price for the 20gig iPod...
Fuck me and call me Betty! I'm finding a credit card asap.

I cant stand that, if your paying 250 dollars, probably 300 since you have to get a game. You would think Sony would make enough money to discount their cards so you could at least get a decent 64mb Card.

Less than $300 if you look around.
Plays music, videos and pictures.
The Nomad and iPod both bow down to it.

But wouldn't it take a while to scroll through your playlist, as it doesn't have a wheel?

Not that model. To have colour and pictures you need an iPod photo.
Smallest iPod photo is 30GB, and that retails at $349.00 USD

You just hold down the button. The wheel doesn't justify buying an ipod.

Well if you do get a better better or equal price on the Iriver, Corrosion has had both and has had problems with his iPod. Plus you may want something different than 99.9% of the world.
