I don't trust people driving on the ground. Why the hell would I trust them with another axis to crash on!

Technically, having another axis to operate on would theoretically REDUCE chances of collision. Not to mention air traffic rules are a lot more unyielding than those on the road.

Air traffic rules only work because everyone obeys them under pain of being shot down by an F18. If you let general idiots into the air they'll be crashing into skyscrapers and making large craters in the ground.

Flying is easy, landing is hard :D
