I just downloaded the Planetside installer from this site. Then I installed it, opened and activated my account.
Now it tries to update automatically. Will this download the files needed to play? It also seems it can't update because the server is busy, but I guess that will just take some patience.

Yeah, the installer will download all the files necessary to play the game, it can take some time, it is over a gig if I recall.

Aye It's just over a gig - it will take a few hours ;)

I sure hope they fix their update-server soon.
Only about 9 days, 22 hours left on trial-key.

 That doesen't sound right lol - you are on a cable/dsl connection?

Cable connection.
Should that be giving me problems?
Otherwise I'll try re-installing the installer, but I would find it quite strange if that helps.

One thing I know poeple have done is download the game from FilePlanet - then just login with the account they activated the 10 day trial on.

Faster download usually from FP especially if you have an account.

Ok, trying it that way.
EDIT: It all seems to be Direct2Drive. So every time I get asked for my credit card number+other details to buy the game. I don't really see a way to bypass that.
EDIT2: Just tried installing the 'installer' again. Didn't help. Neither did turning my firewall off. I guess I'll have to play the waiting game now, hoping that that server will be up-and-running tomorrow.

You should be able to just download from fileplanet without buying the game - I've seen someone has done that recently I just cant remember who :(

I tried finding something about it with the search function, but no luck so far.

Oooh!!
Thank you so much, was getting tired of it when I tried the installer again, and it didn't work.
Downloading now, but the speed is dropping from 250Kb/s to 100Kb/s and it will probably go even lower.
I'm looking at a 5 hour download already. :(
EDIT: Found another download server, also fileplanet. I'm looking at a 2 hour download now, much better.
File size is 1818,3Mb by the way.

Glad you got it running. There will just be a smaller patching process when you are done now.

Downloaded, installed, tried starting it up.
No luck, update server is still down or I can't connect to it. :(
This is really not the way it should be, sony is missing out on a lot of potential players if they all have the same problems.

Update server is down? the patch server is never offline that I am aware.. This is the first I've heard of so much trouble with downloading and installing the game hehe.
What kind of error are you getting?

I just get a little message saying:
"Update could not be initialized. The update server might be busy. Please re-attempt by clicking on Initialize Update."
That 'Initialize Update' is nowhere to be found.

Did you install over the original version you started downloading the first time?
Maybe delete/uninstall everything associated with PS and start over.

I uninstalled everything I had already downloaded before. Then made a fresh install from the client I downloaded today.

hrm strange. You may want to try searching the SOE Knowledge Base:

Possibility:

I tried some of the possible solutions given there.
Removing my router is not an option, neither is removing the firewall on that router.
I guess that means no Planetside for me, unless I can download and install the updates manually. I really don't see why sony makes people go through all this registering and so on. With Eve-online, I can either download the patches automatically, or do it manually if there are problems.

Someone posted this on the official forums:
I am having a problem where after running the launchpad the error "Update failed to initalize" occurs. I've attemted to restart the PC, hardboot my modem ect.*snip*
Thanks for your time. I have solved my own problem.
For some odd reason, proxies were enabled on my internet explorer (I use firefox) and that conflicted with the method PSLaunchpad gets its updates.
Glad to hear your issue is resolved!
The LaunchPad is really just an Internet Explorer window with a nifty skin on it. If you have a proxy setting set improperly in Internet Explorer, it will make the LaunchPad behave improperly, as you have already determined.

Just checked, proxies were enabled in IE and I use Firefox.
So that could be it, installing again now. Luckily I didn't delete the 1.8gig download.

It certainly worked. Downloading updates right now. Too bad it takes another 25 minutes, I can't wait.
Let's hope I had my share of trouble, and no other issues occur.
