View Full Version : Price of Death?

What is the price of dieing going to be or what do you think it should be? I mean I know what a FPS is like but don't you think it would be better if when you died in a battle you could not keep on returning to it. Or that if you were near death it would be better for your medics to help you out instead of just killing yourself and coming back to the battle.
I personnaly think that for the more realistic way would be that when you died you could not rejoin the battle for an amount of time or somthen. I mean it would allow for assanations of the enemies commanders and things. What good does it do to make a well planned assasination just to have him re-appear stronger than ever?

This has been pretty well covered in the FAQs sprinkled around the internet.
Here's one:
http://planetside.station.sony.com/faq.jsp#characters
Question: What happens when you die? Is there a limit on the number of people that can respawn from a location?
Answer:
heh. Follow the link, ya bum.

You also have to bind spawn points, you cant just respawn in a battle. You will have to spawn at a friendly mobile station, or friendly base. And drive/walk/fly back :D

In Q3 death didn't matter. You expected to be killed within 10 seconds or so. If you were good, like me, you could survive for about 15 seconds:p
In PS I hope you don't die that easy. I hope people will actually try to survive instead of suicide missions like in Q3. The price of death should be pretty high in my opinion. 5 seconds for every person bound to your respawn point would be good.

Hi all, i'm new to this community and so i will say a big "HELLO" to all of you :)
Back to Topic:
The death will cost time. First you should never forget to bind at the nearest bindpoint that is possible. A Mobile Station or a nearby Base. If you don't it coul take you a loooot of time to hop over a couple of continents to get back to action. :)
And like the FAQ sais there is got a respawn delay too.
But you will lose no money (there is no money at all :) ) or somewhat else.
The main goal of the Planetside Gameplay is to have fun and fast action. So it is ok if the death panalty isn't much too big.
If you want to see some Ingame Action and how long it takes to respawn try out this Video: Gameplay Video (http://www.planetside.info/Main/Media/Movies/PSMovies/Spelletjesgarnaal_%20E3_2001_PlanetSideMovie_1.zip )
But i think that is not the "normal" gameplay cause this action took place at a Game Convention.
Have Fun :)

I read somewhere (I think it might have been a post here) that when you dided, you got thrown into the "respawn que" at what ever base you were bound to.
You could end up waiting up to a couple of min if their are a lot of people trying to respawn. Basically instaed of having everyone that was bound to a spawn point respawn at the same time (ala BF1942 or RTCW) they'd respawn a few at a time. So if you died, and their were 10 people waiting to respawn you'd be #11 and end up waiting a few min. If no one was waiting you'd respawn pretty quick.
I don't know for sure this is how it will work, but it sounds like a good plan to me.

that's what i remember reading as well Unregistered. If you're the only one who died you would respawn pretty quickly. If you happen to die durring a large scale conflict you may have to wait till people who died before you respawn before you get a chance.
This is a good system because otherwise it would be impossible to take over a complex if everyone respawned as soon as they died.

Or impossible to defend one if the enemy had an APC near by. Imagine killing off all the attackers and your now trying to destroy the APC with a few friends when *poof* 50 guys spawn right next to you.
It's one of the things that drives me nuts in BF1942. Your trying to capture a spawn point and your sitting there thinking "Turn Grey, Turn Greay, Turn Grey" and just as it should they all respawn and kill you.
Of course it is an intense couple of seconds waiting for it to change, but I digress...

Yes, you are put into a waiting queu at your spawn point. I think you could imagine it like a replicator in Star Trek. Your Bio-Matrix is stored at the Spawn Point Replicator and this replicator can replicate only one Person at a time. So you have got to wait until it's your turn :)
Quote from official PS FAQ:
What happens when you die? Is there a limit on the number of people that can respawn from a location?
When you die, there is a respawn timer that must expire before you appear back in the world. The more players that are bound at a facility, the longer it takes for that time to expire.

I think this was already answered by everyone, but the price is high:
Your time.
You don't respawn in 5 seconds. You don't want to have to re-equip yourself and run to the battle again - just like in NS.
Damn... how many times have I assaulted a hive/command center with my teamates only to be killed right before we win. It's bittersweet. You win, but you didn't get to finish everyone off... :(

Im still not to clear on this system but everyone seems to like it but i hope you see people calling for medics and stuff.
I can just see myself charging forward and taking a shot in my rifle arm and falling to the ground screaming medic as i pretty much get trampled over by the lines of men behind me :)
Also another question that we prolly wont find out for quite some time but how long will dead bodies be left lying on the ground? I think it would be way cool if after a giant battle and you finally defeat the mass of enemies you look out over the ground and it is just littered with bodies and blown up parts of tanks and other vehicals.
Which also brings me to my next q, will things like the dropship just blow up or will they crash sending fire and parts everywhere, and also maybe killing some people in the process? It could be really cool to look up and see a flaming dropship come sliding into the ground and then you run for cover behind it.

Afaik the vehicles will only blow up, but who knows, the game is not finished yet :)
And I hope there will no bodies ly araound for some hours. My GPU will burn out with this count of polygons on the screen :)
It will have enought to do with the action of the battle and without dead bodies lying all araound :D

Yea I suspect bodies wont lie around too long, due to framerate issues..

Remember an additional price of death is the potential loss of gear. The last time I checked you could be looted by enemies. This means you will have to aquire more gear.

but gear doesn't cost anything, so i will walk up to the constructer and get my gear again. :)

not realy :)
whats the advantage of dead bodies lieing around lowering your frames and obstructing your view to the left enemies?
I'll play the game because of the competition with other players and the tactical challange of great field combats, and not so see corpses or splattering blood all around :P

In SoF2 the corpes help me find my way around. If I see a dead body I know that someones been through that passage, and they might still be there waiting to kill me.

I don't know if this has been stated, but when you die I think you can hang around and wait for a medic or go straight to a respawn point.
Also, there's the AMS from which you can respawn so you don't have to traipse back a long way to the battle. If you're in an organised outfit, you will have an ams or two to respawn from, and a place to grab a couple of weapons so you can be back in the action in a very short time.

Yes it will probably be similar to RTCW and how the medics work, you can site there for a few and wait, or just go ahead and put yourself in the respawn queue

Either way that they choose to do it I hope that it takes a fair amount of time to respawn. I agree whole-heartedly with Indexion on this one.
What is the true point to assasinating key players/commanders if they are just going to respawn 30 seconds later. I'm hoping that maybe the lapse timer will take about a good 3-5 mins to respawn when in a battle like that. This would give time for something to actually go down because the lead commander is not around. Communications through and to him would be broken when the lead commander goes down. At least that's the way it should be.
Again we get to sit and wait to see what Sony and the Devs. of PS have instore for us. Soon... soon indeed we shall see what's up.

You will have 4 possible respawn locations, and you can prioritize them. One will always be the Sanctuary. Consider that the default spawn. When you die you will be able to choose where you want to respawn, assuming you have set up extra bind points besides Sanctuary. If a lot of people have chosen the same bind point, you will have to wait longer than at a location with fewer people. So part of your decision will have to be based on distance of the battle from a bind location as well as length of time to respawn from a bind location. So you will have to make choices based on how your judgement of what is best for you, the outfit, the squad, and the Empire.

3-5 min spawn timer? No FPS player would ever play the game. Then the only competition you would get is from unskilled (in an FPS game) RPG players and pansies who spend most of their time trying to avoid battle. Oh joy! The fun! Let me at it. Really, please.
It won't be that long, respawn time should be short but the thing to remember is you don't respawn in the action. Depending on where you saved your matrix and where the battle is it could still take you a good 2-3mins to get there. :)

Some people have to wait 2-4 minutes when playing CS... if they rush and get killed for their team ^_^
Just bring along an ams.... your very own spawn point!

Well in that i include the time it takes to get your equipment and get moving, if you don't have a shortcut for a Med armor with a pulsar and ammo plus a REK,etc, etc, etc it could take you a while just to get out of the base. :)

maybe this may be the use of a locker? *shrugs*
Nah the locker won't improve respawn time much, the main thign to save time respawning is saving shortcut keys for your most used armor outfits like in T2.
