Came across this video linked from Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Looks pretty intriguing, and appears legit, although I have to say some bits look just like a BF2 mod. (If it were real, though, it's probably using the BF2 engine.)
Any thoughts? To be honest, it would be pretty fun, but I think they should really focus on working more on BF2 in terms of bug fixing, etc. First thing this said to me was "Hey, let's exploit the franchise for more cash!", but then again, what do I know? :p

It's official, BF2142 has been in development for awhile and the video shown along time ago of a mech in a futuristic city was the new game. It's being made by Dice Sweden and is scheduled for release in 2006 (though that'll probably get delayed). IMPORTANT! The game IS using the SAME core engine as Battlefield 2.
There will be two factions (sad panda), American-European Alliance (Americas and most of Europe) and the Pan Asian Coalition (Russia, the middle-east, and India). These two factions are fighting over control of the only hospitable places left on Earth after the polar ice caps melt, covering 75% of the world in an ice age.
Apparently each base class will have two subclasses to choose from, such as support going engineer or medic. And you can develop the class "RPG style" as you progress, with a more extensive ranking system like BF2's.
Snipers and spec-ops are two paths to take in the "recon" class. There appears to be two sniper rifles. They have a cloaking ability that makes them appear like a blurry blob running around (when moving), when cloaked they are almost invisible. One of the branches carries tracking bugs they can plant on/near things which will put some kind of target on those enemies, and the article mentioned some weapons will automatically track/follow that target. They also get EMP grenades disabling vehicles and binding players.
Assault didn't get revealed too much except they have "badass guns", and the secondary fire on them launches proximity grenades (unless it hits someone/thing then it blows up).
Support you can choose from engineer or medic. Nothing revealed about medic, but engineers will have drones they can deploy which will spot enemy targets and attack with some light firepower, but it's made clear that it is a very loud obvious device that will attract attention to you. Also they will have access to 3-4 types of mines.
Anti-tank had really no info about it at all. PCG guessed the branches are anti-air and anti-ground vehicle, and their rockets might seek.
There are weapons still on Dice's drawing board such as a vehicle mounted railgun. APC's are equipped with emp weapons to help deploy under enemy fire, and have "mysterious hatches that might be used for experimental weaponry", perhaps customizable turrets or emplacements. The picture of the APC shows side mounted turrets and a top turret, with 4 little hatch-like things with logos that appear to be some kind of buildable area.
Infantry wear special uniforms that will allow for different abilities (recon has cloak).
Rewards will be given for excellent squadwork, and staying in the squad each map will have benefits.
Squad leaders will now deploy special beacons to allow squad members to respawn by him, so the leader will be able to join the fight while teammates are respawning unlike BF2. But the beacon can be destroyed, or camped until it's naturally destroyed.
New physics are being added to allow for more versatility with animations and such like the mech walking. They can also be knocked over in "extreme circumstances". It will also crush players.
New mines include the "chaser mine" which will be planted until a nearby vehicle drives by, at which point it will hover after it.
There are sticky-bomb like explosives for the recon.
Hovercraft-like things (think HK's from Terminator) will replace helicopters, and there will be futuristic fighter jets but Dice is keeping those under wraps.
The interface is being overhauled completely. Buddy list is being implemented that will allow you to join the server any buddy is in. Simplified menu is replacing the cluttery old menu. Also map loading times are being reduced.
Parachutes are being replaced with something Dice has not commented on. They did say though that they are not jetpacks. So it's something else.
Night vision/grappling hooks will probably show up in the game, they are thinking of importing expansion pack features into their game but they aren't sure what to do.
Co-op with your friends is going to be a complete new game mode, against an AI team.
There's another mystery game mode they are keeping under wraps but PCG is guessing it's an entirely air game mode (odd!).
Apparently the game was in a pre-alpha stage when PCG played the game but they said it should be out by the end of this year and the game will be displayed for sure at E3.
there ya go. all true. and it looks like a cheap mod for BF2. fuck EA
I'm waiting for Enemey Territory: Quake Wars.

Interesting, the semi-furturistic stuff is cool.
Is it just me or did that buggy thing look like an ANT, and the VTOLS very similar to reaver/mosquito?
To be honest it sounds like it could make a better single player story than just some random multiplayer fraging.
My thoughts, from elsewere.
I think I'm done buying EA for a bit, for some reason I keep buying, got euroforce yesterday, not bad, might even be worth the $10, but I don't want to promote the gimping of games so features can be released as expantionpacks idea that they have.

:thinks back to the last time he saw mechs get put into a primarily-infantry game:
eh, sounds fun but what will determine who drives the mechs? Will there be some crazy mech-site camping, because that would suck ass. Additionally, how are they gonna keep these things from being totally overpowered.

It will probably be exactaly like tanks are in BF2.

Thats doesnt seem likely... it seems to carry a much larger ordinance and be much more versatile.

Doubt it, looks to be like abrams from BF2.
As for the whole game its self, with all the new features and additions they are adding to the game, for example the buddy list, THIS is the real BF2. The interface improvments should have been there from the start. Depending on price I might buy this. It DOES look like fun, and vehicles are custom jobs It would add to the flare. Time will tell.
I havn't played BF2 so I don't know much about that. But I might play this if they fix some of the cons I hear BF2 has.

Actually I think even though it's just new weapons and maps it looks promising because its in the 22nd century.I always liked the future because always new stuff to look forward to.

Did some searching around, found this. (http://www.picfury.com/galleries/ImageGallery-409.html) Scans of the PC Gamer article in the issue that video came from, I guess.
Looks pretty good. Although, it looks like this might either:
a) Be good, and be the last Battlefield game,
b) Be bad, and be the last Battlefield game,
Unless they can come up with other settings... To be honest, it seems to me that placing a game in the future just kills any other plans for a continuation, unless they do Battlefield 2152 or something. Battlefield Mars?
EDIT: That being said, I'm still looking forward to seeing how this game ends up. Hopefully it'll be a good one.
