and bored off my ass. Tonight we're scheduled to bring down all of the agencies mainframes for the timechange. Some I have to bring down completely, wait an hour, then bring them up again. Others I just enter a single command and the time change takes effect.

Anyway, I'm stuck in the Command Center right now watching some real-life criminal drama. I hate the shows so much I'm resolved to playing Tribes: Vengeance Single Player. But the damn show is still playing in the backround. Gah...I need to leave this shift ASAP.

Quitcher Bitchin'.

I work in a Department of Defense facility that has a locked-down network, filtered internet (the only non-work website we can view is CNN.com, and even that they're threatening to block), as well as restrictions on email, no messangers, no anything that isn't strictly work related. On CNN all video feeds are blocked, so we can only read text articles (which sucks because usually the best stories are only available on video).

Not only that, but we're prohibited from reading anything non-work-related, we're not allowed to eat at our desks (though I've gotten my boss to look the other way), play games, or anything like that. Its gotta be "work related". Of course TV and crap like that is out of the question.

The problem is I work the late shift, so it gets really slow, and there is NOTHING to do. I could die from boredom. I get so bored that I feel like smashing things. I get so bored I get angry. The building is full of cameras so it's hard to get away with shit and some of the managers are pricks.

Of course, some of the managers know it sucks and turn a blind eye. If I'm lucky, I can get away with playing some of my PSP if one of the better managers is on duty. If it's one of the worse ones, sometimes I can get away with a book. If it's one of the few terrible ones, I'm doomed to read the same CNN articles over and over in the hope that I'll find something interesting I missed the first time around.

EDIT - Funny story too btw... Sports Illustrated is a subsidary of CNN, so I found I could visit the Sports Illustrated web page one day. Now, I'm not really into sports much but the Swimsuit Edition pictures were up, and so I began browsing them, checking out the chicks. I'm looking at a particularly nice group photo (where one young lady has taken off her top and decided to use her hands to cover herself), and one of my female managers comes around the corner to ask me something. She apparently saw what I was looking at, thought it was porn, and quickly kept on walking. Now, she's probably the coolest manager there, (her and I go to the bar after work sometimes), and so when one of my co-workers told me that she'd said I was looking at porn, I went over and explained to her that it was only scantily clad swimsuit models. I've never seen a manager look so embarassed in my entire life.

Yeah, Peace is right. I'm one of the vets on the ADT Special Operations team which handles high-priority and sensitive accounts like banks and US Marshal buildings.

So yeah, I can turn the alarm systems on and off in banks, courts, and jailhouses (in addition to every other monitored ADT account, homes and businesses included). Hence the need for our network to be secure. As a result of this, the building I work in is a Department of Defense-cleared building that has to meet all the guidelines of an actual government building. We do also have a DoD department in the building (the next step up above what I do) that handles Top Secret / Secret government stuff like alarm systems on military bases and such. Yes, believe it or not, ADT installs alarm systems into military bases. We don't monitor them for the most part (wtf are we going to do, dispatch the police?) but when shit breaks, we still have to fix it.

A lot of what I do is carefully monitored by the Department of Defense and US Marshals. I deal specifically with US Marshals and govt court house buildings (as well as some jails), Bank of America, Chase, CitiBank, Washington Mutual, Wachovia, Sears, Countrywide Home Loans, ACE Cash Express, as well as all sub-contractor serviced accounts (which includes many accounts in Beverly Hills etc owned by stars). There's a bunch of smaller stuff thrown in that I keep an eye on as well, and if I don't have enough work, they have me deal with the standard Residential home customers, businesses, schools, etc.

The thing that really pisses me off is that I'm not getting paid a whole lot of money for what I do. I had to pass a background check by the FBI for this job. I have a huge responsibility, if I fuck up I can have the US government investigate me, banks lose piles of money or risk being robbed, etc. My job is basically to work with the "Oh shit" accounts that if something goes wrong with, it could cause serious trouble for the company. Despite, I'm not paid much. At least the benefits are decent, and the people I work with are cool.

Back to topic, working in a DoD-cleared facility sucks ass, as everything is strictly restricted and monitored.
