View Full Version : [PICS] Electro considers buying... a wagon?!

Yes, a Wagon. But no ordinary Wagon. Ladies and Gents, I introduce to you my latest desire, the '05 Dodge Magnum SXT AWD.

First, heres some pretty pictures from the Dodge website:

http://www.dodge.com/gallery/img/magnum/enlarge_24.jpg

Alright so now that's done, let me tell you what makes me even consider a wagon.

First things first, I'm looking to buy the SXT AWD, which means an AWD car with a 3.5L V6. No, not the Hemi 5.7L V8 that is available. I can't afford that unfortunately. However the V6 still puts out a respectable 250 bhp with 250 lb/ft of torque. Factor in the AWD and it's got good spring for a 2-ton car. This is the same engine that goes into the second engine up for the Dodge Charger.

Second, the car I've found that I want to buy is fully loaded. All leather interior, heated leather seats, 8-point adjustable power seats, power windows and locks, tinted windows, keyless entry, remote engine start, 288 watt Boston Acoustic 6 speaker sound system with CD changer and AUX in, rear flip-down 7" LCD screen DVD entertainment center and AUX-IN ports (XBox anyone?), Traction Control, Stability Control, power sunroof / moonroof, 18" brushed aluminum rims, power adjustable pedals, telescoping adjustable steering wheel, autostick manumatic shifting, fog lights, heated mirrors, 72' cubic storage space, advanced dual stage front and passenger airbags, 5 star front and rear crash test ratings... you get the idea. Its pimped out.

And yes, I can afford it. AWD + snow tires + traction and stability control = no more Electro flying through 65 mph speed limit signs into the ditch. Having more than twice the horsepower I currently do also should keep my speed demons happy.

If / when I get it, I'll post the actual pics etc. Its not Hamma's Evo but it's certainly got a sense of luxury. Sitting in the back with the DVD entertainment center flipped down feels like riding in a limo. :cool2: Now all I need is a chaffeur...

Oh, that VW piece of poo. 200 hp AFTER turbocharged. Sure, if you like wasting premium grade fuel on an weak engine. You've got turbo lag to deal with, not nearly as much pulling power, not nearly as much room, no AWD, doesn't have half the luxuries and standard equip that the Magnum has. I've also heard those things have terrible reliability and the warranty isn't nealy as good as Dodge's.

Not to mention I think it looks terrible.

No thanks.

EDIT- Peace, its about 25 IIRC with AWD, but, for example, that's with 87 octane. GTI has to use premium fuel IIRC, which means its 32 mpg FWD ends up being just about as expensive.

You know, that thing has a very unnatural look... as if the rear was just slapped on top...

If you want the real thing, I'd advise you to consider getting the Audi Q7... V12 man, V12... http://www.audi.de/etc/medialib/cms4imp/audi2/emotion/entertainment/gallery.Par.0266.Image.jpg

4.0L v12.... The power you get out of those things is ludicrist compaired to a V6. Its pointless to have a V12.

I wrote something long out and then the damn fuze got blow over here. :(

Anyway compared to the Gti the magnum is slower, 7.5s 0-60 compared to 6.8(and the engine is undertuned, with a simple chip you can be doing 230-240), AWD only helps you accelerate, it doesn't help you slow down or keep from taking a turn to fast, infact it makes both of those things much easier.

I can understand that you don't like the car, but you can't call it a piece of shit by any means(reliablility is only an issue with the MKIV VWs, unfortunatly america was two years behind europe for the release of the MKVs), except that it doesn't project a big enough e/rl-peen or whatever for you.

I'm not saying the magnum is a bad choice, it's gotta lot of cool features, it's not an example of a poorly delivered american car. (Though, what's the point of a DVD screen, and some of those extras are you ever gonna get driven around for long enough periods of time to use it, or do you have kids to entertain? I just don't see the point. much ratehr not get that stuff and spend the money on stuff that counts, intake, exhaust, chip and what not)

Some cars you might want to look at though befoer you go for it: an A4 Avant, a Subaru Forester/Legacy wagon - you can get the WRX engine in them, a 3 series Wagon. Also the VW r32 is coming here in a 4door 250HP, DSG tranny AWD and crazy comfort.

I took a test drive in a Forester wiht the turbo 4, and man that thing could pull + subaru's AWD is probably the best non-premium brand AWD out there.

Considering american car companies are losing more money every year, I'd buy the Audi. I saw a few in Germany and they are nice cars.

Youve never acctualy worked on a car have you rob? Or driven Hi preformance. No chip makes anything go 230 mph. The fastest bikes out there struggle to top 210 - 215.

People spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to break 220. The 1970 Dodge charger Im working on will probably NEVER get that fast and I could fit an engine 25 - 40% larger in. You aint bustin 200 in that thing. End of story.

Oh yea, AWD does more than that. AWD will slow you down faster. Especialy if your driving a standard. As you let off the gas all 4 wheels get resistance from the engine and the breaks resulting in a faster deceleration. My Charger can stop in about 90 ft from 70. If I break AND use the clutch breaking I can stop in about 45. You also run a lower risk of locking up the tires in an AWD even with ABS which can still lock up.

AWD in a turn means your tires wont lose all traction completly, as they spin they will grip the road better. Once again less chance of spinning out with the AWD as the whole "wheels that slip to the wheels that grip" mechanism kicks in.

I don't have the Evo anymore. Long story

Wait, what?

The Magnum is nice, and you are correct, it is indeed "pimped out".

But the Magnum is nothing without the Hemi. Believe me.

This girl I worked with in Rancho Santa Fe had her parents buy her a brand new 06 Charger with the 5.7L Hemi. That thing pulled like a freight train.

Electrofreak
2006-11-02, 01:24 AM
Rob probably means 230-240 hp Peace. It's a pointless arguement, since I could drop a Zoomers dual exhaust onto the Magnum for another 25 horses, taking it up to 275, while jacking its fuel economy UP to 26 mpg. Or if I was crazy, I could throw a supercharger into it. I'm not a big mechanic myself but my neighbor runs his own garage and my step-moms boyfriend is a body shop artist. I can easily get some cheap modding done.

Yeah the GTI has faster acceleration than the Magnum. Sure, that's great. But it's not AWD. I could drop the AWD off the Magnum and get the 5.7L Hemi (drool!) but the fuel economy is too low (even with MDS, Chrysler's technology that shuts down half the cylinders for crusing). I'm getting the AWD first and foremost so I can have a reasonably powerful car that WONT fly off the roads. Up here in the snow belt that's important.

EDIT - Oh God. I've found a R/T, that's the Hemi 5.7L V8, for sale only 2 hours away, for 3 grand more. And it's also fully loaded and AWD. God help me.

$24,500 before taxes. What do you guys think?

Hamma
2006-11-02, 07:57 AM
Sounds like a deal to me :p
Wait, what?

Not to derail the thread but I may as well finally explain.

I bought the car, was happy with it and everything was dandy. About 3 weeks after purchase I discovered that I got assraped. I blame myself, and the criminal car dealer - I came in knowing exactly what I wanted and the prick took advantage of me. After I discovered that, I could not look at the car anymore. I felt like a sucker everytime I sat in the seat even though I loved the car.

So I filed the appropriate complaints and then got rid of the evo for like 9 grand less than I bought it for a week before. Even though I took a hit, I still feel better now and dont feel like a sucker anymore. It was more of a mental thing than anything - I just could not live with myself  I got a fully loaded Malibu SS which while not the fastest car on the road is as comfortable as hell and takes off when I need it to.

Mannnn... I can't stop looking at that 5.7L Hemi V8 R/T AWD for sale only 2 hours drive away. It's also loaded and listed for 24,500 before tax... but my original maximum was 22 grand. I could possibly push the seller down to 22 and with tax it'll be around 24.

On one side, I'd actually be able to sell the Hemi V8 in a few years if I need to, whereas the V6 would be much harder to get rid of.

I *could* dip into my savings if I really gotta... but I'm supposed to leave those alone so when I'm an old retired dude I can be rich and spend retirement on cruise ships drinking champagne and watching chicks in bikinis splash around in the pool...

*Sigh*

Why can't this ever be easy?

Hamma

The Magnum is nice, definately in the top 5 on my list of SIWAMOMTMG (Stuff I Want As Much Or More Than My Girlfriend).

I like my 85 Grand Marquis tho...has the 302 (5.0L) in it. Right now it is a debate between fixing it up and buying something newer.

Electrofreak

I think I'm gonna go for the Hemi.

In any case, it's not hard to sell a Hemi V8 AWD vehicle, so if I fuck up and somehow find myself not able to afford the thing, I can at least sell it for just about what I get it for (if not more).

Also, in 5 years, a Magnum V6 will drop pretty heavily in value. A Magnum V8 Hemi won't depreciate nearly as quickly.

It's going to cost me a few grand more, but I think I'll do it.

Now I'm really pissed. The bank has told me I need a co-signer for my loan.

Why? Well 5 years ago me and my father co-signed on a loan when the bank was under another name. Apparently when the bank switched names and they put the data into their accounts, they listed the loan as being under my dad. So for the past 4 years I've been paying this fucking car loan listed only under my dad's name, and thus receiving absofuckinglutely no credit for it. According to the bank this would be my first car loan.

What fucking bullshit. I'm getting my paperwork pulled together and speaking with a corporate office bank manager.

Hamma
2006-11-03, 02:58 PM
ugh man that sucks ass I hate credit.

Its such a bitch - you need credit to do things, but to get credit you need to do said things such as get a credit card or loan.

It makes no sense

Electrofreak
2006-11-03, 03:04 PM
Correction: I checked the paperwork and I am not listed as a co-signer on the first car loan. Strange because I'm positive I remember co-signing on it with my dad.

In any case, my dad hasn't paid a single payment out of his own account for that car which I've been paying on time for 4 years. If I have to beat them with 4 years worth of bank statements I will.

Electrofreak
2006-11-04, 12:58 AM
Double post!

:banplz:

Seriously though, I talked with the bank, they're being bitches, so my father will have to co-sign.

On the plus side, I just got a 5% raise today. Just about covers the extra cost of the V8 versus the V6.

Alright, so, status update.

I'm buying the 5.7L V8 Hemi Magnum R/T.
http://www.lxforums.com/board/images/smilies/hammertime.gif

That's right folks, Electro is going to be pimpin' it. Should have pics Monday or Tuesday after I get the car.

Dealer was originally selling it for $25,000 and was offering me $1,200 for my current car as trade-in. Today we made a deal for $23,500 for the Magnum and $1,500 for my car. Ultimately, I bargained the price down $1,800. :D

Turns out the car had the Boston Acoustic 6-speaker 288-watt sound system that I was so dissapointed wasn't on the sticker. When I went on a test drive with the dealer, he noticed the Boston Acoustic badge on the door, scratched his head, and checked the sticker. It wasn't listed, but it sure as hell was there! So I guess I got it as a freebie! Sweet.

Kelly Blue Book retail value of this car is about $30,500.

Electro is teh win, kthx. http://www.lxforums.com/board/images/smilies/Racing.gif

Got the car. Pics and maybe some video in the morning.

If this car was a chick, I'd propose. It's fucking sweet.

I took some of my co-workers on joyrides today showing it off. I made a chick scream when I floored the gas. The car is fucking sweet to drive, has tons of awesome shit to keep me entertained, and is FAST AS FUCK.

On my way back from the dealership, I was 2.5 hours from work, and was worried I'd be late. I got to work in 2 hours. Some poor dude in a riced-out Honda tried to race me on the way, and got spanked. After I slowed back down and let him pass (mostly so I could smirk at him), he flicked me off.

I'm really trying not to brag too much, but I got an awesome car for an awesome price, and I'm totally loving it. I'm glad I got the HEMI (though, even with the fuel conservation mode it still eats gas), and it's a totally kickass set of wheels that will keep me happy for years. :)
