How many Tribes 2 players we got on this ship, anyway? The outfit I'm in, Varangian Guard, has a large number of Tribes 2 Renegades players in it. Who else out there is a Triber? and what to you will be the biggest compensation for loss of jetpacks? :)

I was a triber since the game came out. I just stopped playing the game completely like a week and a half ago. Been playing BF1942 with the rest of my CDL buddies. :D

Yup...T2'er here. I currently play T2 part time for |BRO| (which incidentally has nothing to do with my callsign). I play Battlefield 1942 with my clan New Century Gamers (http://www.ncgamers.com).

Since SmokeJumper was a big part of the Dynamix team that developed Tribes so I EXPECT it to play a LITTLE like Tribes. :D

I expect it to be a WHOLE lot more, tho too... hehehe

Tribes 1 here. Never did like T2 too much. I too would hate it if PS played a lot like T2 becuase it just had the wrong balanced of speed vs tactics. T1 was a lot better in that respect, and it was simpaler.

...Tribes 2 was a disaster. And Planetside doesn't need to compensate for jet packs. The vehicles mass murder the jet packs. Plus Planetside is on such a larger scale than T2. Nothing compares.

Tribes 2 wasn't a disaster but it wasn't without it's problems. If you had the patience to stick out the glitches and what not you would have realized that it's actually a great game. People who also took the time to learn the game instead of being frustrated at the learning curve got to enjoy the game for all that it was.

As for comparing tribes to planetside, it's one of the only games that you can really compare it to. Futuristic team-based fps. Granted the games are on completely different scales but the basic idea is still there, "defeat the other team".

Quakish lol? have you ever played the Quake series? the games are designed around the DM element. Unless you find a CTF mod (which basically any game has) than it really has nothing to do with planetside other than being a FPS.

CS is a little more team based but it's still basically you on your own. You can win rounds on your own by killing everyone. In Tribes you don't win by going cowboy. You won't cap the flag most of the time without help from your team. PS is massively team-based, quake and CS are not.

I have T2, but I don't like it that much. My bigest problem with it is that the weapons projectiles move way to slow. I don't think it will be like that in PS though.

Most weapons have a travel time, the bolt-driver is the only immediate damage weapon. Obviously rockets will be slowest. Then Vanu lasers, Then Bolt Driver. I'm assuming most things in the middle will have relatively the same bullet speed.

I know that weapons have travel times. I just don't think that they will be as slow as they were in tribes considering that most weapons fire bullets.

I still play tribes 1. I don't know how you get off saying how it doesn't take teamwork to win game. If you've ever played in a real 8 v 8 match it takes plenty of teamwork. I'm not sure what mod you played, but I've played shifter forever. Its fast paced and your rite, it does require quick moves via mouse & keyboard. Now if you just played it w/o being in a real clan, it really doesn't require much teamwork. It was and still is a great game for its day, but i'm thinking ps will be better. :D

I never played T1, but loved T2... I managed to wade through the bugs and the learning curve to find an excellent game.

I was a hard-core tanker in T2, and I may well take that route here in PS as well. It's all about vehicles. Big, well-armed vehicles.

Lol, i heard about that whole classic mod so i found my t2 cd in some box and reinstalled plus spent hours patching just to find out the only changed was...spawn favs...omfg.

Sure t2 has more and better graphics, but for a fps its a little, too pretty? IMO they spent too much time working on the graphics than they did the actual gameplay :/ Ide play tribes 1 over tribes 2 anyday because its just more fun to play.

Not quite sure you played the classic mod. There's no spawn favs in classic. The difference is VERY apparent. Its called classic for a reason. They brought back the phyics of T1, as well as disc-jumping and mine-disking. The speed is very similar to T1.

Anyway, again, all I wanted to do with this thread was see who in the Planetside universe plays Tribes. I guess I achieved that. Oh well.

I played T2 religiously for, god, i can't remember how long. I stopped playing around six months ago after my tribe broke up. (i just recently learned they reformed, but so many of the core players left it wouldn't be the same.) I mainly played Mechina 1.0 (not whatever that new mechina crap is) with some TAC2 and the odd round of Tank Artillery or base for a change of pace.

It was classis ctf, played on katabak and some other map, i was spawning in the armor i used as opposed to spawning standard and needing an invo every single time i died. As far as the physics...i witnessed none and it did not remind me of the supposed "classic" tribes 1. Its not like i spent all day there, maybe an hour and well it still sucked :/ Frankly if you think tribes 2 beats out tribes 1 then well, glad to see you nothing about what your talking about...

To each his own, if i wanted to someone to get into tribes id give them the original and id tell everyone i know not to play tribes 2 because they would be dissapointed, i would say most people that play tribes 2 are people who never played tribes 1, so they know not what theyre missing.

If you were playing in a classic CTF server Practice Mod must have been on. That is a new addition to the game with the coming of the classic mod. It allows you to spawn in favorites or spawn vehicles from "spawn pads". As for the physics, they are completely different from the standard T2 physics. They are much like Tribes 1 but not exactly.

I did play Tribes 1 and it was a great game but I don't miss it. I thought Tribes 2 was fine the way it was but alot of people who played Tribes 1 wanted that Tribes 1 feeling. They wanted everything faster. First came the Base ++ mod which sped some of the physics up and then Classic mod rolled out. There is a very noticeable difference between classic and standard base. I suggest playing it again and take a closer look at it because you obviously missed something.

I pubbed in T2 for about 6 months. I hadn't played T1, and I spent the first month and a half getting slaughtered repeatedly. I got to be pretty proficient driving the tank, bomber, and havoc. Disn't spend too much time shriking.

I only played Tribes 1, when Tribes 2 came out my computer couldn't handle it. Just recently my friend loaded up T2 and played the classic mod and i watch him fool around on it. The game looked the same, skiing and all, but i havn't played in so long i think i forgot how it was.

I still play T1 for World Assasins (biggest newb name ever) on the 5v5 ladder. Still a good time, would be better if I didn't suck though. :)

I don't think it's a really fair comparison between the tribes series and PS. I think PS is what Dave really wanted to make with t2, whereas tribes has always been about individual achievment as part of a team, sort of like baseball, PS will be more like football, the whole team needing to be in sync in order to succeed.

SMURFS weren't gay. They owned ppl. Not the best tribe of all time but they had mad l33t skillz. WRH played against them in BEML before we went to OGL and TWL. I led WRH for a while... 2 consecutive BEML championship appearences. WRH all the way :) We may not have been the best... but we had fun.

Well some of you might know TKB, Tappa Kegga Brew from Tribes1 and Tribes2 and numerous other games.

We've formed an Outfit/Alliance with fellow Tribes players called Allied Tribal Forces.

If you'd like to team up, we're going to be playing Vanu on the Central Server. No reason to bash T2 or T1, they were hella fun if you gave them the time. And nothing compares to matches with Tribes.

I played T1 from the start in base, then the CDL switched to the Insomniax mod where the CDL had a run of glory days.

We made the transition to T2 and picked up some of the best warriors I have ever served with. We had moderate success in the OGL and TWL ladders, but we enjoyed the heck out of the games.

I loved both games, and I loved playing with most of the people in both communities.

To me the history and heritage of these two games will always live on as great memories and flat boatloads of fun!

By the way, I am still somewhat active in T2. Been playing a little with The Ministry. :D

I think there's more interest in PS from tribes players than most of them would care to admit. I'm sure theres some concerns, but for the most part, we've been salivating for anything similar to tribes since the moment it all died down. What was a 'cowboy' then? a good player? actually, cowboy's where awesome players...call them the gamebreakers if you will...on pubs, one or two of them could turn the game around almost single handedly. Just because someone owned a pub didn't make them great match players, in fact, I recall quite a few 'cowboys' who sucked ass on teams because they wouldn't play their roles. I played T1 religiously for three years, led Brute Force Strike Team and ran the second most popular Ren server for 3 years. I didn't get addicted to T2, primarily due to the molasses-slow game-play.

I never played T1. But the current installment of T2 from what i hear plays very similar. T2 is a great game... now. Some of the tribes community won't play Planetside for one simple reason. DaveG. But thats a whole different issue.

I could very well be classified as the "Cowboy" that can rock a pub but never really shine in a match. But it's not at all about "staying on task" and "doing my job" I'm ona mid-tier team. Thats never really been able to hang with the big boys. You not totally off and nor is any other "cowboy debate" But in T2 it's a natural progression. A competitive T2er has had to deal with learning T2Base (this is the slow version everyone complains about) Base++ (which was a faster) and now Classic (which is really fast paced). With each new installment. New skills have had to surface. It's almost like learning a whole new game.
Fortunately, most of us Tribers have already delt with the massive learning curve and at this point. No game poses any challenge in that respect.

In the begining of T2 cowboys where tards that didn't get what was going on around him. Ofter running off with little more than a his blaster. As this game has progressed, if you see a stray or a "cowboy" and step to him. You could very well get owned.
There still are alot of cowboys in T2. Probably more now than ever before. Because they dont only encompass the top ten. But there are some really good mid-tier teams. With its own "cowboys".

Planetside to me is just the natural progression of what i already know. Knowing i need and want more out of a game. IMO PS is just a step in that direction. As will T3 when it shows up. But because of the nature of PS. I think alota ppl may see the big picture but can't posibly grasp whats about to happen. PPL that don't see it and play anyway. These will be your "cowboys" at the start. Clanless n00bs, lambs to the slaughter. But, because of the steap learning curve so many have already undergone. PS should be a piece0cake. And it won't be long till you won't be able to tell a true "cowboy" appart form the typical n00b til its to late.

Is the entire tribes community gonna invade PS??? No. Will the ones that do, 0wn? I think in most cases...yes. It's the "wantmore" thats driven us this far. And the "wantmore" that will progress us in PS.

Played Quake:Team Fortress for 3 years (not that TFC crap).
Played Everquest for 2 years (the first two).
Played Counter-strike for 2 years.
Played DAOC since release (50 scout, 50 zerk, 50 sb, if anyone cares).

I only played Tribes a little bit, and never tried T2.

I'm very interested in Planetside because it seems like the perfect mix of the FPS/MMORPG worlds that I love.

Haven't chosen a faction or outfit yet, still just window-shopping for the time being.

Heheheheh, we all know that 5150 left cause they wanted to hold thier undefeated record. It was only a matter of time before vanguard beat them. I still find it suspicious that they left the TWL immediatly after a very close win with vanguard :D And you left before we got a chance to play you dammit! :)

That said, there wasn't any team that played like 5150. You guys had a certain magic, instinctiveness about your playingstyle. Vanguard were, imo, a better team - but they didn't have the flare you guys had. Vanguard played a perfect, but boring game where they didn't take any chances. You guys always went for the gamble, and got it :thumbsup:

I hope you do all come to PS, cause I would love to get a chance to finally play against the team I looked up to :D

I did my time in t2. Played for Rx for a long time. Once classic came out, I didn't have enough time to play comp for a long time, so I just pubbed a lot. Now I just play tr2. Less of that these days too.

Just to show how much of a geek I am, team 5150 isn't originally a T2 team. They started out as a T1 team and dominated the TWL and OGL CTF ladders for at least a good year. Their main rivals were iE, otherwise known as Imperial Elite. Then, when T2 started gearing up and a lot of players were moving from T1 to T2, they moved along with iE and a few other top 10 clans. From there, they've left T2 and expanded to play BF1942 and SoF2. If any of the 5150 players, let alone all of them, start seriously playing PS, they would be living legends just by rep alone. Although I have to admit, seeing iE and 5150 playing in PS as TR outfits would be pretty sweet.

IE did not play T2, we beta tested it and were very unhappy with the beta and release of it.
Most of IE will probably be trying out PS but knowing what Dave G.s idea of a "fun" game is its very likely that we will not enjoy it. But you never know I am really excited about the idea of a MMOFPS.

and please, if you played some crazy mod (ie. ultra renegades or shifter or one of those other mods), don't consider that true *TRIBES*. That's like saying Half-life & Counter-strike are the same thing. HL != CS. Any mod for T1 != Tribes 1. Any mod besides the normal (ie. classic, TR2, etc) != Tribes 2.

Of course I'm biased too. I played T1, and bought T2 the day it came out.... was sorely disappointed too. Been playing a lot more recently though, starting with the Team Rabbit 2 patch & up to classic.

I'm sure some people will now yell at me and say that "renegades was cool" or some crap. ok yes, renegades was fun when i first installed T1 and liked flying the "wraith" to the center tower of scarabae.

The reason Tribes 1 is better than any game that ever has come out and ever will come (including PS, although I still plan on getting it) is because Tribes 1 is a SPORT. The mix of Defense, Offense, timing, and the massive learning curve made for the most enjoyable game ever..

Now, let us cross our fingers that T3 moves back towards T1 and away from T2.

I dont concider People who ONLY played Base, to be the only true tribers.

I started out on Base, moved onto Renegades when it came out, then on to Shifter.

Alot of people who didn't move onto Shifter over the years loved Base. I loved Base, was fun as hell, but public servers just became newb central, and I needed something a little more fast paced.

Base seemed to be nothing more than a fatty sitting on the flag, while skinny asses skiied around and snatched up flag from the other base.

Base was defenitly more Team orientated, you need to work together more then ever to achieve a win for your team. Something that doesn't happen all that often. Publc servers were turned into dueling grounds.

Moving onto Shifter, You could do what you wanted in public servers and it rarely effected the outcome of the public game.

I never did any Base matches, I wish I would have loved the game that much to compete way back then, but I was running Tribes on a PII 200 with an Ati vid card lol. It was nasty to say the least.

As time moved on, Renegades came about, I believe in 98-99? and Graphic cards were starting to hit the market with one purpose...games. in comes 3dfx and thier voodoo line. I ran out and picked up a Banshee lol...what a card ;)... The physics of the game were speeding up, Aircrafts, turrets, boosters..thigns like that.

Then Emo had to get involved =\, would have been great if he would have stuck with it. But alas, we got stuck with Lothar, Grey and Gonzo twisting Emo's goodies into thier own little creations.

My point is, I didn't stick with Base long enough to compete, and I am pretty sure you dont compete in Shifter. True, they are 2 totally different games, yet both are huge parts of our past, and most important of all, Part of our future or gaming.

So the next time someone says, "if you played some crazy mod (ie. ultra renegades or shifter or one of those other mods), don't consider that true *TRIBES*." They obviously didn't like the play style, probably for the same reasons us Shifter/renegades players didn't like base.

t1 wasnt my first game. I started with q1 tf. was one of the best demomen in the game. Went to HL and tried cs and tfc. cs was fun for a year or so and tfc didnt feel like q1 tf so i stopped playing that. I played t1 for over 3 years. Played t2 for a bit and didnt liek it to much. I tried to like it but i just couldnt. Currently I am still palying t1 with the #1 team in twl right now, Wolfpack. i am also considered one of the best HO in the game. i played sof2 for a bit and just recently stopped. my team in sof2 came in #2 in cal for sof2 in the first season. we lost to zfz by 1. So far nothing has kept my attention as long as t1. i am hoping planetside does though.

I played the entire life of Tribes 1 with my tribe called 'Western Alliance". We were damn good. We stuck around and waited for Tribes 2, but once it came out, it was more of the same. Dynamix had a chance to take the game to the next level, and they really didn't. The tribe became disinterested and started to fall apart. I still played quite a bit of Tribes 2, and even play it once in a while now to keep me sharp for Planetside. Too bad they wasted dev time on the community crap in the game, rather than the gameplay.

I see Planetside being the game Tribes2 should have been.....and a whole lot more. I am going insane waiting for it as I am sure most of you are.

I just registered today, I'm a Triber (Tribes 1), and I did NOT do it in preparation for the forum invasion tomorrow. :) (Btw HILARIOUS thread Sir Lucious, too bad it got locked -- I don't think most PSer's have TW's sophisticated sense of humor, and ps -- moderators who know TW can confirm I am NOT Sir Lucious, even though we both have Luc in our names).

Anyways, given the general level of Dave G-hating that's being tossed around here, I'm kind of depressed that I mentioned Tribes at all in my beta application. I mean, I really want to beta this game . . . I would be such a l33t little betaboy, I can document like a MAD crazy mofo. But even if they didn't have a million other applicants, there's no way they will accept someone that put "I loved Tribes 1, and I liked Tribes 2 all right" on their beta app (or something like that).

Anyhoo, I'm fair-to-middlin' leet, even though I'm mostly a pubber. I still play Tribes 1 religiously, and don't even whore tribalwar that much, which should help dispell the myth that ALL Tribes 1 wh0res are just loudmouthed malcontents with no brains who don't even play the games any more, they just want to bitch.

Although, honestly. I think most of us hate Dave G in the same way we hate orbital123 -- we'd ban him if the opportunity presented itself, but we love to hate him too much to REALLY get rid of him. He's part of the Tribes Universe now, like it or not -- part of the legend, the myth. He will forever go down as the greatest villain in Tribes history! Long live/die Dave G!

Btw, any good Triber outfits starting up? I kind of want to be a Vanue just because of the jetpack . . . but . . . man, I'm so worried that the Vanu heavies were given the jetpack to lure all the Tribers there, so they could be nerfed. :( I mean, wasn't there an interview where a dev team guy said that they all kind of made fun of the Vanu for looking kind of gay?

Anyways, heh, it's all good. Hopefully, Planetside will be better than DAoC. DAoC had a good idea, but it just failed to SATISFY . . .

DAoC is based off Mythic's text game almost to the T. DAoC is basically the text game with graphics, and then they of course did some MAJOR overhauls of the classes and whatnot cuz the game is forever in a state of "unbalance". But the concept of 3 realms, idols (wait, they call 'em runes or somethign don't they? oh yeah relics), realm points, etc. it's all in the text MUD.

The one great thing about DAoC is that it sounds like Mythic actually gives a crap about them, whereas the text MUD is in the crapper (obviously its a $$$ issue, but they could at least humor loyal fans of 7+ years by giving them a programmer to FIX the game.....)
