Since there have been a few threads reguarding stealth. How many people are interested in this aspect of PS? Sneaking around with small covert teams, trying to stay hidden from the enemy..

Me

*edit* I won't be a sniper. I would like to sneak up on my enemies while they are more focusewd on bigger things. If am not sneaking up right behind them, i hope to atleast suprise flank flank them.

Remember, vehicles will show up on the regular radar, foot soldiers won't.

And, I think suppressor shots to the back of someones head would work just as well as hand to hand combat moves.

stealthy sniper perhaps... cannot really see much else stealth could be used for unless they put some hand to hand combat moves in which would be really cool...

ie... sneaking into a base and taking out the sentry posts or gunners would make taking a base more interesting

I would not be surprised to see this implemented in Planetside. It'll be really interesting to see how they do it though, I'm guessing camouflage will be a huge factor since it would be fairly easy to spot a squad of soldiers sneaking around in bright armor... hehe

Another thing about the Vanu: are Armor is not bright, its purple, and as for the post, i plan to be a sneaky guy, like a kitten, http://216.40.249.192/mysmilies/games/sailormoon/cats/artemis_frtsit.gifsneaky, but not made into a barby like the other kitten on this site...... I hope stealth suits can have sniper rifles.

I think evasion will play a bigger role than stealth, but that might be splitting hairs. The key is to get to the objective without detection and hit it hard before the defense can react fully. It doesn't matter so much that you stay quiet once you are fighting, unless you're going to extract immediately, and then you're better off with a ride standing by than trying to take the objective by stealth.

But that makes me wonder how many objectives, particularly deep in enemy territory, will be unguarded or defended by 1-2 players. Those could be taken quietly and the harrassing force could hoof it on to the next target before a response arrives to take the first objective back. Hrm..

what about like 5 or 6 sneaky guys, not in stealth suits just sneaky, going around and using rockets and mines to take out wolf packs of tanks. EX:

lay a ton of mines in a pass, get up on cliff over pass and wait for tanks, see tanks and fire rockets, doing little damage, and run. Keep it up till they chase you, coming through your mined pass, and then when they are A) dead or B) badly damaged open up again with rockets to kill the people who got out and the remaining tanks. same ploy might work with lightings, but using there gun instead of rockeets, and if you have a trunk you could carry extra mines. Sneaky tanks.....
the rocket guys could drive those stealth bikes the baslisks

oh just thught, a simular squad of guys with rockets could go looking for galaxys and their escorts to blow up.

Still undecided, i'm hoping during the open beta we can get a good feel of each type. I'm torn between Sniping/Hacking/Stealth and Repairs. :ugh:

Okay, I may have missed it, but do they give you the ability to get real close and personal when killing? Do we have knives here? Just curious... okay, morbidly curious. ;)

Dont think there has been much said about close quarters combat, knives and such

This is pretty basic guys.

Go check out the official site:
http://planetside.station.sony.com

You'll see a list of weapons, vehicles, and a FAQ.

Go read it all. Then come back. And THEN you can ask questions without getting flamed. Much.

In other words: RTFM. ;)

I'm very interested in this particular topic beyond undetected sniping.

being able to rig mines, charges and or direct artillery or airborne attacks from a hidden forward position is the focus for stealth for me.

taking out key base implacements and/or personnel/vehicles would make ambush and hit & run attacks and the like (IMHO) much more successful missions with fewer death-clones and lower insurance rates (ie: less dying).

lets hope it 'actually' works.

I've looked around, but i don't se much on the hacking tool. So, assuming you can do kewl things like hack enemy turrets in their SOI to turn against them or things like that, I would think a stealthy hacker would be extremely fun.

But if hacking is limited to only stealing vehicles and taking over bases I suppose it wouldn't be as fun.

I would hope they would include a function to hack turrets and use them on the enemy. :borg:

Each one of the Empires has it's very own knife, so I'll bet there will be a fair amount of stabbing going on, and I could be mistaken, but I think in the Dev Chat they mentioned something about hacking turrets and turning them on the enemy, so it may be in there too.

Word is you can hack into a bunch of enemy systems. Which would probably include turrets/etc

but i'd suspect it has to be done from the inside

THAT opens up some interesting possibilities. Like hacking equipment and vehicle terminals to get empire-specific gear. Which could be Really Confusing, if you got enemy armor. You'd probably end up with your own side's stuff, or gear from the common pool.

You'd probably be limited to "common pool" stuff though, since you wouldn't be cert'ed in their own gear. Maybe.

Think abou this one: A small squad of stealth/hacker types sneak into an enemy base, hack the armor terminal, and all switch to MAX armor, and thence commenceth the bestowing of pain and anguish 'pon their foes. Amen.

"Where the &*#! did they come from?!"

Heh. :evil

right! in the meantime squad 2 creates a diversion on the other side of the base to pull forces there, making the infiltration easier (in theory). not only are the enemy engaged on one front, but the hide-n-seek team is busily turning their own systems against them at their flank.

war is hell!

The reason for my seemingly simple question was to stir more debate on the original topic. Yes, I could follow your link and your advice and, as you so eloquently put it...
RTFM
... but I choose to invigorate the conversation and toss around imaginative ideas. As for flaming people just because, in your opinion, they need to follow the sheep into the pen... to flame someone is easy and without merit. To stimulate the conversation and create the bond that edifies the PS community, that is the optimum route.

I'm VERY interested in the covert aspect of PlanetSide.

Although I've never much liked stealthy games like Thief (and to an extent Deus Ex), I love sneaking around and getting the enemy when they don't expect you. Kind of like how a Spy playes in Team Fortress (Q1 mod, also Team Fortress Classic in Half-life). They can disguise as an enemy and stab people in the back for a 1 or 2 shot kill. It's all about the stealth with that class, and mastering it makes you very powerful.

I'm a bit concerned though about the idea of a cloaking device. In a few mods (and mods of mods) I've played, making a player invisible heavily skewes the balance in favour of that class. Keeping TF as an example, a mod of a mod was made where in a portion of it, a spy can activate a cloak for a period of time (loses health while it's on). While moving the spy was about 80% invisible and while not moving 100%. That class was so unbalanced that players demanded that the cloak was gotten rid of, and the next patch it was.

Hopefully the cloaking device in PlanetSide will be more balanced.

Well i heard(ok read) someone here say cloaked troops have less equipement and move slower. Add to that the fact that bases will surely have a means of detecting them on radar and the implant that allows you to see cloaked troops and it shouldn't be too overpowered.

Must be a riot to have the visual implant and see a cloaked dude sneaking up on you then at the last second you turn around and pump him full of lead. :D

cloaking was dealt with pretty well in Tribes2. motion sensors, time/energy limits etc. it was still very effective yet could be seen by a keen eye (footprints in dirt etc). I've taken alot of shots in the back being fooled and caught about as many thinking they were invincible.

it can be done without making them the super class. if a defense is prepared for it, its just another body bag
