Ummmm, ok. You can communicate to squad members all the time I think. You can also send a message to everyone near you. When you get higher command ranks you can talk to more people. Eventually at like command rank 4-5 you get the ability to broadcast Planet-wide.

but are the things you can say set or can you say anything you type in?

You wont be able to type something in and have people hear it..if that was so this game would be extremely advanced. You will although be able to type to others via a chat box on the lower left corner or use a 3d party program such as Rogerwilco or teamspeak as a way of communication.

You can type in a message, as for set voice commands....dunno.

I also think there is a set of commands that a commander may use to instruct his troops (i think). Those will most likely be heard

You can only talk to people in your vicinity, you can type, or use teamspeak (voice microphone). The only way that you can adress a large amount of people is if you are a high ranking commander, also you cannot communicate with enemies.

Terran Eilte Airborne Regiment

um Serbitar i belive he ment planet-wide as in being able to speak to people across all the continents, which is in fact a planet. Not the name of the game.

Dark- Well, thanks for trying.

That be insane if you could broadcast planetwide by CEP rank 5, there would be a flood of spam. 15 is a more reasonable CEP rank to broadcast planetwide

And dragon I'm sure that was a joke...

yeah, they'll be adding the advanced cEPs in expansions probably, maybe in the monthly patch, yet it seems to large a change for that.

I dont know how many ranks of CEP's there are but I believe there are only 5, not sure on that.

You can not chat with people who are not of your empire.

I am pretty sure they will make an acception and not be anal about it, but there is something against third party softwere in there somewhere, and we cant use it. This is to prevent Aimbots and trainers though, and they will mostlikly let Teamspeak and Roger go though.

It's CEP not BEP. There are 5 CEP levels. It is rather difficult to earn it. The only way to is to be the Leader of a Squad that captures a base. If you are a Squad Leader in a Platoon, and the Platoon caps a base, I believe you get CEPs as well. This brings up a question, will there be a Platoon Leader? That would be helpful.
EDIT: You CAN talk to enemies. You can do this if they are close to you and you broadcast on a Local channel.

Also, there are some in-game voice macros. :D

Heres how i think comminicaton in PS will be:

Non CEP:

1.) You can send a message to the people whitin a short vicinity of you.. imagen a circle whit a 20fett diameter around you that you can talk to everyone it at once.

Example: you hit enter (or /s) and type "hi guys" then everyne whitin 20f of you can hear it.

2.) Theres your own squad channel that only people in your squad can hear, no distance limitations on this... can be on different continents and talk to eachother.

exaple: you type /squad (or /sq) "so where we meeting up?" then everyone in your squad can hear it, even those guys who died and had to respawn on another continent.

Or a platoon channel, where all your messages goes to your platoon... just replace /squad whit /platoon

3.) Theres an outfit channel that everyone in your outfit can hear no matter where they are or what they're doing.

example: you type /outfit (or /o) "hi guys, whats going on?" then all our outfit gets the message.

4.) There voice chat macros like in Tribes2... no need to explain those

CEP

5.) Continent and empire wide broadcasts. Lets you send out a message to the entire continent or your entire empire.

3rd party (not made by the devs and isn't a ingame feature)

6.) roger wilco, teamspeak2 etc... programs that lets you talk to people whit your mic.

Course you'll have the ability to set your default channel to talk in.. say you're in a squad and want hitting enter to make your messages go into the squad channel you'll be able to select that instead of another channel.

I think the system will be wery much like the EQ system but the EQ system was a really good one whit the channels and multiple chat windows and such.

Zataris you forgot /tell 1337dude hi mate sup? type messages!

Yeah the EQ chat system was so good because IIRC Verant ripped off and very good MUD system (text based net RPG the grand daddy of MMO games) dikimud.

Text based MUDs had to have a good chat system because there was no GFX to speak of!

Also if its gonna be like that system (why re-invent the wheel, PS is SOE and so is EQ), then you will likely be able to create chat channels (call them rooms if you want). I don't know whether this will be featured, it was a later addition to EQ originally EQ only had guildsay, groupsay, vicinity-say & zone broadcast chat channels.

That still makes no sense to me, hehe. The Vanu and the NC both split away from the Terran Republic in open rebellion...why would they NOT speak the same langauge? Of course, in game it makes perfect sense...every 1 in 5 people would be a spy. You would make plans to assault a base only to find 50 enemies waiting in ambush. Still, it would be nice to talk smack to each other in the middle of battle...

Enemy 1 - "AGH! That #$%^ got me again! Stupid bolt driver!"
Me - "What happened? Oh, thats right, I blew a 6 inch hole through your chest, my bad."
Enemy 1 - "I hate you."

:D

That is why you can use voice macros and physical emotes.
