The AC isn't exactly known for high quality reporting, and I wouldn't doubt that some of those quotes are made up. The other two sources don't have any of the quotes in them.

If that's true, it IS a hate crime. He knew it was insulting and did it to see their reaction.

Even if the quote is made up and it was a mistake. Honestly I can understand how this could be seen as a real hate crime. Just recently in the same city someone rolled a pig's head into a mosque. It's the same thing only on a religious-intolerant-in-training level.

Yeah, I agree that the story at it's base is pretty ridiculous anyhow. We as a nation preach tolerance, but god forbid if we offend anyone.

If someone is offended by accident, it should be forgiven. If someone is offended in jest, it should be admonished. Only if lasting, irrefutable permanent damage is done should any action be taken. A ham sandwich will not do such a thing. And if it were, it's the responsibility of the person who lives in an environment that could potentially contain offensive ham sandwiches to adapt.
