Do I need to get the expansion in order to have a good time playing Planetside?

There are very few in the caves I wouldn't worry about it much.

However PlanetSide "Aftershock" that they are selling now includes Core Combat.

Upgrading to the expansion doesn't make you unable to play with people who've not upgraded. So there's no division in that sense. Everyone is still playing the original Planetside, only there's a bit of fighting in the expansion areas now and then as well. The bulk of the fighting is still in the non-expansion areas, however, because the expansion areas are pretty bad and most people don't like fighting in them much.

In short, the expansion is really shitty and you're not going to miss much if you never buy it. Though as Hamma said, because it's so shitty and useless I'm pretty sure they stopped trying to scam people out of money buying it and simply folded it into regular Planetside.

You do get some cool guns with the expansion, but it's not really worth it as everyone else has said.
