The new iPod is here.
http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/05/ipod-touch-first-hands-on/
Also they announced a price drop for the iPhone, $399 now and they killed the 4gb model of the iphone.
I've been waiting for a touch screen ipod for a while now, although I am not so sure on the price, 299 they should really have a larger capacity one.

guess its time to throw my nano into a microwave, and tell futureshop it stopped working...
And WTF is "iPod Classic"?

Ipod classic is just the old style ipod, the touch wheel ect.
But being more expensive with less space - fuck that.

So basically this ipod is just an iphone without 90% of the features. This is what it seems to be. The iphone plays songs and holds videos and pictures, right? Never the less, it is definitely a nice product.

I suppose I might get one once my current iPod stops working.

Actually its pretty much has almost all the iPhones features except the phone
One thing is for sure and that's that there are a ton of pissed off people who paid 599 for an iPhone  I've been waiting for a touch screen iPod/Widescreen iPod for ages, i may wait a couple months tho see if the price gets nixed again. There's no chance in hell I need more than 120gb of fucking space for an mp3 player

I wish I had enough music to fill 5gb. But then again, I have a ton of video's and movies I could put on there.

I need a new iPod. I have a 4gb nano, and only have about 500mb left. I would seriously fry mine if the smallest model was bigger than 4gb. Maybe I should just go legit and buy a new, larger capacity player.

I've got 28 gigabytes of music on my hard disk right now.
Now I don't listen to all of that, but I listen to a large enough portion that I'd miss stuff at 16 gigabytes. I really would.
The ammount of music isn't the main problem though. In the end I could deal with 16 GB of music.
The real issue comes with video. A crappy divx season of scrubs, for instance, takes 4 gigabytes (24 eps at 30mins each, VGA[standard TV?] resolution). An 80minute movie can take 1.5gb.
If I've got a wide/touch screen iPod I want my music and videos without having to hassle with switching it out. 16gb is not enough for that.
I'd spring for a 60gb Zen Vision W(boohoo no touch screen) at $400 ($350 online) WAY before I'd buy the touch ipod.
As it stands I've got a 3 year old 30gb ZEN, and it works more than fine for me, until it stops working I don't have a reason to change.

Yea, 16gig is incredibly too small. My 30Gig Video has all my favorite music on it (its completely full), while my 80gig has the rest of my music and is close to 60gigs full. Ive also got some music on my PC/ Laptop that I shouldn't even think about putting on either of my Pod's cause Id lose my gig if I played it :X
Total its like 115 gigs of Music. Then Ive got videos too :P I wish they would just make a nice 200 gig Ipod and get it over with :D I wouldnt mind having a Tera byte sized mobile Epeen though :D

Doesn't the new 160gb classic do video as well?

yes, but it's got the smaller screen.
I think Apple actually has got the right idea though. The average person buys the ipod because it's "cool" not because of the functionality/storage. Otherwise creative and others would have a much larger market share. More people will go for the touch because of the cool factor than people who go for the 160gb because they need storage(they've got the same price point as I understand it, right?).
It kinda bones the people like us a bit, but the market really isn't about enthusiasts.

Yea agreed, it does kinda stink I want a touch with like 30gb that would make me happy. 16 in this day in age is kinda odd.. I gues they were going for the thin factor.
And I belive they are kinda around the same price point

If you've actually used one of the more recent iPod classics (the update right before this one), you'd know that those screens actually aren't terrible.
I seriously need a new iPod, and was waiting for this update to come along to get one. Partner discount that shit and I'm set. I can now fit my entire Umphrey's, Grateful Dead, Door's, and Pink Floyd collection comfortably onto the same ipod and have space left over.
Anyway, Apple is, if you haven't noticed, really specific about what they market, and they're very strong proponents of flash memory. 16GB is perfect from that standpoint, any more then that and the touch would lose price point. Price point is everything.

I have use a new Ipod, and yeah the screen is OK.
However, that doesn't change that fact I'd rather have a slightly thicker 80 or 160gb touch-with-hard-disk. In the end, I doubt that the Touch would loose price point by using a disk instead of NAND.

I hate flash memory... every fucking mp3 player with flash mem gave me a huge boatload of problems along with it. Since I joined the bandwagon almost a year ago after I got rid of my "I don't wanna be like everyone" attitude... not one breakdown... it works great and I've got nothing to complain about.

I prefer flash memory. Songs seem to load quicker, the player is light (good for a workout), and it saves batter life. I guess what you do with it is a deciding factor. If you use an ipod for working out, or walking, etc.. The only draw back is it smaller size and higher price. I think a flash player is better. If you just want your music collection to be portable, a HDD player is better.

Rob, it takes much more power to run an HDD then it does to run NAND. Add in to that the fact that the power source must also power the multi-touch screen. Thats a lot of power being dispersed = less battery life.

I like the touch because it can do a ton of other things, surf the net without a cell phone contract/monthly fees etc etc.
I'm sure we will see a metric asston of mods for it too.
