Thought it would be cool if the new Planetside supported mobile phone devices with some sort of application that let you:

Get updates on your outfits/empires current progress.
track in game sensors / listening posts (outfit/player deployed) for troop moments.
Give commands to your outfit to attack a certain targets etc.
See which friends are online.
Send messages in real time between the mobile device and your friends/outifts in game.
Perhaps even send in orbital strikes (or requests)

From a cash grab stand point. I'd pay $5 to $10 for an app like that.

From a cash-grab standpoint I'd pay good money to see your Planetside movies, and see one for PS:Next as well.

Just sayin'. :D

lol... nice.

Yeah I put a couple movies up on Youtube. I have www.malvision.com pointing to my youtube page currently.

I'd love to film some Planetside Next... but since I haven't heard anything about a beta test. I guess we have to wait until the March release. (assuming that's what is being released in March?).

Well, how far did you get with your Planetside project? Wasn't it called "Shadows of Auraxis" or sommat?

What I would want is the basic functionality of the official website back in the say with the ability to track current and recent territory ownership, and check out statistics for characters, squads, outfits and empires.

As for apps that actually let you do stuff "in game" you could have people directing troops around somehow.

Firefly

You mean using global chat? Because that's really the only "directing troops" one could do in the original Planetside. And in all honesty, I don't want a bunch of idiots using their phones to type to me in-game from their phone - like they're sending a text message...

I think it's good enough that they could get game & continent updates, or see outfit rankings or player standings within their outfit.

My thoughts were more for a command tool for outfits. I know some outfits are very serious about command structure and giving commanders tools to make decisions and communicate isn't a bad thing.

I wouldn't want it linked into global chat at all. Friends/Outfits only.

The can just get rid of the global chat all together as far as I'm concerned and come up with some alternate way to communicate between CR5's for coordination purposes.

I think Global and Continental chat, as well as Command chat for CR4 and CR5, were effective tools. However, just like any chat channel, it can become an annoyance.

Would definitely be cool to see some integration with external devices.

Hopefully the next iteration of Planetside will have true territory control mechanisms and the ability to own city/bases/towers/etc. Having the ability to see feedback on the status of your empires territory or your outfit's property/structures would be awesome.

Another cool feature would be the ability to communicate with the members of your outfit. Send a request for bodies, or notify of an impending attack.

Yeah I don't mean global-ling or anything.

I do like the idea of using phones to call in reinforcements!

Exactly! I was thinking how useful it would be for getting you out of work. Picture this:

*Miir is sitting in another boring meeting at work when his phone beeps a new message*
*Miir glaces down reads a report that the TR is making a coordinated assault*
*Miir looks up at his co-workers pale faced and in distress*

Coworker1: Everything ok Miir?
Miir: ahh... not really. My son is sick at daycare I'm suppose to go get him.
Boss1: Ok get out of here... we'll see you tomorrow.
Miir: thanks! the VS...err I mean... we appreciate it.

*Miir leaves work and speeds toward home*
*Miir gets pulled over by police*
*Miir shows police officer the cool phone app. He explains all the cool real time updates and shows the graphic map of the TR attacking.
*The police officer is impressed but... still writes him a ticket for $175.00*
*Miir continues on his way home doing 5 under the speed limit*

*Miir arrives home, jumps on Planetside and helps successfully push back the assault.*

*Several hours later. Miir's wife arrives home*

Wife: How was your day today?
Miir: It was awesome! This new app got me out of work today at 10:00am! and it helped us defend an attack! On two fronts no less!
Wife: Wow... that sounds pretty cool.
Miir: Yeah! I love it.

*short pause*

Wife: Did you pick up the kid at daycare?
Miir: ...

*Miir looks down at the phone for help however it is strangely quiet this time*

The End.

But seriously... I could see this being very useful.

Definitely. If i was the police officer though... Prolly woulda let you get off okay.

No. Because the cop would've said "Ha, I'm writing you a ticket. I'm NC!"

Good for that cop.

NC ftw.

Heck, I have an even better idea for a phone application: make it so we can play via our phones. Play and do what? Stuff that we can do anyway if we lack in great computage capabilities: heal, repair, deploy, whatever. Decentralize PS from homes and make it so we can dash in anytime, anywhere, and join a fight for a few minutes. The new smartphones are close to as capable as the rig I had when I started playing PS years ago, probably surpassing it. Why not a narrow-windowed view of the PS universe where I could jump in and repair a turret in a base battle from anywhere I happened to be?

Imagine PS anywhere. Oooh, mama.

That would be very cool. I think my original thought was more of a command tool but I like your idea better. I could picture the avatar of a mobile app to be a small utility robot. That would just float around and repair, set mines and turrets.

I'm not sure how feasible that would be with the gameplay but I would definitely be interested in an app like that if one was made available.

it would be pretty cool to issue orbital strikes anywhere in the soi of the base your character has logged out in via mobile device. i'd buy that app in a heartbeat!

The world is becoming more "my entire life is lived through this electronic gizmo" oriented. By diffusing PS to a DRASTICALLY broader audience, just think of the potential.

But, let's say the smartphone users outnumbered the actual laptop/tower computer crowd. What then? I say make it possible to play, in any role, at any time, for any duration, just like you were on your computer at home.

DANG what an idea. Some people have actual lives, and have to be out and about. For them, they could jump in and out in the ten minutes their wives are having their hair done, fat fluffed, or buying that new dress. Suddenly, idle time wouldn't be spent texting people endlessly, it would be spent hosing opposing players in Planetside!

Imagine a world that is just a mask for your REAL world, Planetside! You duck into the john, just to jump online and IA to an assault in time to place three critical turrets, snipe some jackass VS AA prancy max, get blown to bits, and duck back out, no one the wiser!

This could become pandemic. A whole new world. One we would not have to leave for very long, ever.

I think we're on to something, here.

Most people have lives so mundane and non-mission-critical that this is exactly what they need. Imagine farmer Clem out on the back 40 escaping Hildegarde for a half hour, and being able to be immersed in his digital world.

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2026635/mwc-motorola-atrix-video-demo

There is something that I have looked at. Imagine being able to plug in your video goggles, so you don't need a full screen, you are looking AT your world, from IN your world, instead of a small smartphone.

Suddenly, anywhere with 12G or whatever the kewl new wireless data thing is at the time, becomes a mobile command post, just like the guys who fly drones in the 'Stan from Nevada.

Wow.

Anything beyond Empire statistics/map information is really too much for smartphones and data networks of today to handle. If you have seen some of the FPS's available on phones today, you know that, while the graphics have improved quite a bit, they are still far behind even the original Planetside which came out so long ago. Controls are horrible, and the games are short. Multiplayer is generally limited to, like, 4 people.

Trying to implement something like that would really just detract from the experience, in my opinion. Best to keep the experience centralized and focused on the PC.

I accidenataly bumped this thread, because I wanted to say that 3G PSVita/IPad can handle a planetside 2 app.

I mean there can be loads of stuff - online resource/skill q management, simplified real-time commanding (so the commander can observe the general flow of battle while he's not infront of his PC and give orders), live inter-platform chat, outfit management, stats, cash shop....

Yes and I do say this because I got my PS Vita and I'm amazed at its capabilities. Hell, the thing is a like a gamer version of a tablet...

EDIT: And I personally don't consider this a waste of the development time. Post-launch development time, anyway...

At the least, skill management is planned as an app.

Someone asked Higby at the PAX Curse party about apps. He said they're trying to make it as easy as possible for people to develop everything from UI mods to fansites to apps.

So hopefully some of these ideas a reality will be doable.

I'd really like to see a map and some way to communicate, particularly with one's outfit, in a mobile app.

I had to do a double take when I saw this thread from 2 years ago. lol

Still think it would be awesome if they could bridge the game between mobile apps side and the live game. So in real time you could be communicating with your outfit or empire. I'm not sure if this has been done with any other games to date but it would definitely be useful for Planetside commanders and a great community building tool.

It would be awesome if an app was like, "The enemy just captured 90 percent of the territory on Indar! You call yourself a soldier?! AHHHH NOT EVEN CLOSE!"
