View Full Version : Coffins....

In one of those new screenshots that Hamma posted I just noticed that in the dropship center there were a ton of coffins. This brings to my mind a few questions:
1) Is there an option to turn off coffins, IE make it so we do not see them. If larger battles lag will be a problem, and there will be lotsa coffins, less lag if no coffins there, also a ton of coffins looks kinda foolish, though a few are cool.
2)How long to coffins last? Until looted? 6 mins?
3) Can you loot some ones coffin if they are of your empire?

1.) Dont know.
2.) Probably several minutes.
3.) Yes. Fairly certain on that one. I even raided my own once.

Personaly I think no matter how long coffins actualy last, people are going to be goign through them for anythign they can find. I can see spawning in a base with no power, having your locker empty. So you gotta go silently take out an enemy somewhere behind the base or something to equip yourself. I think it's going to be very commonplace to see people with weapons not of their empire. Like i'll take my gause cannon wherever I go but I'd rather yoink one of those Vanu pistols personaly. I was never one for the shotgun (or shotgun pistol for that matter):)

since we are on the topic of coffins i thought i would bring something up. Can u have more that 1 coffin at a time or does the oldest one disappear as soon as u die and the recent one stays(im not sure if i explained that right so evan i know what im talking about)? I think coffins should last until u die again that that one disappears and the recent one stays so u don't have to keep staring at ur graves everywhere.

How much will lockers hold? Will they hold enough that we can collect stockpiles of enemy weps?

Stow a bunch of Mini-chainguns and ammo in the lockers. Surprise those TR Nazi bastards.

I will have a little respect for the dead and not loot.

Coffins stay for 5 minutes I think, then they disappear. Also, it's not a question of respect for the dead, because when you loot a coffin, the body is gone. It has been sent back to a spawn point to be reconstructed. At least, that's my theory.

Five or so MAX inventories, and we are assured that is damn big.
I don't know if turning off coffins would be wise or possible. They aren't just an object in the world that you don't need to see, they are somewhat important.
Coffins will probably have a timer so they don't last forever as just spam, also if they are completely looted I bet they dissapear. I also imagine you can't have more then one coffin.
And yeah, you can your own empire's coffins.

well, personally, i'm not too keen on the idea of "coffins"
i believe it should be like the standard FPS: you shoot them, they die, they fall down, they leave thier stuff to loot in a pile

As I plan to be a sniper my problem with coffins is if you see like four of em in a vally you know someone is in the area that recently killed 4 of your buds, so you will be on the look out, and thats bad for the sniper who killed those 4.

As a sniper, would you rather corpses be left? It would be really unrealistic for nothing to be left.

And thats only a good thing. Single snipers ain't realy supposed to be able to sit in one spot and take out a full platoon of soldiers :)
And it makes you choose your targets...

So it is more realistic for their body to magically disapear in under 5 minutes?
Seems pretty simple to me, the rebirth process transports the body, replaces it with a coffin so that their items are stored, so they can attempt to gather them later.
*shrugs* I personally don't mind them at all. Not any weirder then graves popping up after a death in a MMORPG like DAoC.

And bodies lying around like they did in EQ caused major lag, especially on big raids where you could have 200+ corpses lying around.
It becomes even more unrealistic when they invent commands like /nocorpse which was designed to overcome the lag issues of having 200+ corpses lying around, you just typed in the command to hide the current set of corpses!
I think coffins is good, less polys than a body, and it also shows that the body has become reborn as part of the birthing process.
It also indicates to the medics which people need reviving and which have been reborn.

I'm fairly certain that coffins will only result if the dead soldier "releases" their corpse. If you have someone with Advanced Medical cert then can't they "revive" the dead guy before he releases? That would cut down on stray coffins...
PLUS if you come back and "loot" it, doesn't the coffin go away?

i think they should work loot like tribes/tribes to, your corpse is on the ground, people walk over it, people get your extra ammo and maybe whatever gun you were holding if they have a spare slot.
coffin aren't really nessesary sine there is no currency and your armor is of no value (other then if you are not near a supplying station)

What if you like a Vanu Lasher and from NC? That means you'll what to be looting these, and the ammo for ot as well.
Anyhow, Coffins are probably even less polys to load then the actual equipment, since it is, after all, just a box.
