Anyone else still find it ironic that the main server select/empire select screen is still hoovering above one planet? Like after all this time since the planet exploded??

Awesome Guide Westy!

I'd recommend changing the download to this though:

http://planetside.station.sony.com/download.vm

It's direct from SOE. Otherwise great guide - went ahead and made it a Sticky thread.

On the newest station, it lists all of SOE's MMOs for me. It asks if I want to activate or try on all of them except star wars galaxies (which I also played besides planetside). It asks me for cdkey/code for planetside, for which I enter my # that I got from direct2drive when I purchased the game way back when. Says it is invalid or used (even though I used it on this account). I basically don't want to but planetside again, but I'm willing to pay monthly. I swear SOE doesn't want more subscribers. This is so difficult :( HELP!

*EDIT* It just occurred to me that I might have had more than one account... found my other login haha. Feel free to delete this, SORRY!

You might want to add a small appendix for Windows Vista "suffers" (No one uses Vista by choice) ;)
I was installing PS on my brothers PC this morning and when I went to launch the game it told me I needed Windows XP or better, after my laughter subsided that even PS knew XP was better than Vista I went to change it and found that the compatibility mode was pre-set to Win98.

That on first install they may have to change the compatibility mode it's set to.

Right-Click on the planetside launcher

Click Properties

Go to the compatibility mode and untick the box.

So, I found someone who seemed interested in the game but couldn't produce a link for him to buy it...

How can I force direct2drive to show the US titles, or is Planetside available anywhere else?

Down at the bottom of the main page of Direct2Drive there's a 'Regions' section where you can select the UK or US.

Thanks

Fingers crossed for getting another player hooked on Planetside

edit

Waitasecond, it automatically and immediately redirects me (back) to the UK site :/
Does anyone else get that? If it's just me I gues it doesn't matter, but what will my prospective victim think about the game if his first impression is that it seemingly actively resists being bought

Open planetside launcher -> log in under account that you should of already setup.

Next click on the big purple button that says subscribe.

It should bring you to another page with a login. Re-log in using your same credentials.

It will now send you to a bogus page that says oops where did that page go.

Hit the close button and it should send you to your account management page.

Go to game pass info.

hit subscribe -> select option. $14.99 a month

go back out and re-log in and it should download the client.

In the game pass info section it doesn't even list Planetside as an option all it shows is:

free realms
starwars
pirates of the burning sea
dc universe
and everquest

on another sony account of mine it has the same except vangaurd is included. when logged on to my sony account i go to browse their pc game list and i see planetside but if i click on the buy now option it sends me to gamefly with a page can not be found.

But everything else that you said happend got the oops. Not really interested in playing it much but I just want to buy the game and subscribe so i can get into planetside 2 beta but sony is making this very difficult.

Does the Planetside All in One Bundle on Station.com work? It brings up a page to enter credit card info but i'm honestly scared to try it. What with the uncertainty going on here with dead links and the game being pulled from download sites. It's also the full 20 dollars. Not 12 dollars like some said. Unless you still do have to buy the game to play.

I cannot find this game anywhere. Id love to get in there and learn a bit before PS2 hits. Very frustrating. Its like SOE doesnt care about PS1 anymore, which I can understand. But with this new release coming, there are bound to be more people like me looking to get some learning in.

You dont really want to play PS1 in its current state. From 03-06/7ish it was an amazing game, past that tho it is underpopulated and full of hackers (not as bad atm as it used to be).

Also with how much is changing for PS2, it wont really matter if you played PS1. Only things that seem to be remaining from PS1 is names of stuff.

Try everything you said with a fresh new account. When you hit subscribe it goes to a dead page. Closing that it goes to your account management. And you don't find Planetside listed under game pass options.

SOE's station website is horribly designed. But I have found that from your account management if you hit "Games" then click "SOE All Access". Then from this page hit "Shop" then magically the "Game Pass Plans" option is now available. Even though its not from your account management. And there at long last you will find the subscribe to Planetside option.

However trying it on a fresh account I noticed attempting to subscribe takes you to page where you can buy the Planetside All in One bundle. I'm guessing it may still be necessary to buy the game not just subscribe like some are saying. I'm wondering if it comes with a free month or if anyone has tried it to make sure it works.

That way works perfectly fine too. I was under the impression that it was common knowledge managing your subs from account management. And no, you don't have to buy the game. If hitting the subscribe button doesn't work for whatever reason, follow the above steps if you don't know how to open your account info and do it there.

You've always needed to buy a copy of the game for a fresh account (not reserves account) you can get one from Direct to Drive as the first post says or from the SOE bundle deal which is relatively new.

edit sorry, since they became gamefly it's no longer available

I never bought the game. I downloaded the client and subscribed, done deal. Just as many other hundreds have.

This was back in 2008 though. The subscribe button itself works still to this day, I don't know what issues everyone is having.

You may have lucked out then, and this is something they "fixed" at some point. Since if you try on a new account trying to subscribe just links you to buying the all in one bundle like I said. It honestly would not be a big deal if this bundle came with 2 months of game time it would pay for itself. But i'm not sure if it does.

*Sighs*
Does PS1 work with Windows 7, 64 bit?

I've been through the download hell described above. I've reactivated my station account and have a live sub. (I've resubbed so I can complain about the Pro7 stuff).
I've downloaded both versions of the game, but neither will let me in.

For the original version, when I get to the page where it asks me to log in it says "must have a subscription" when I enter my station name and password.

For the Aftershock download, I get a fancy little launchpad but it says SOE is "down for maintenance" and won't let me log in.

Thanks for any help/advice

I have downloaded PS, installed it, ran the launcher and put in my Station name and password and I'm told I need to set up a subscription. I don't see a subscribe button anywhere. My SOE account goes all the way back to the PS Beta but as I haven't been on in a long long time I cannot see the sub in payment history nor can I find a place to subscribe on the SOE website. I'm in the UK so maybe it's different from the US?

Should I create a new SOE account and try again?

My friend just wanted to get some pre-taste to PS2 (new players to Planetside) with PS1, so he just went through this process. He said he bought the game from SOE site for 18€ and it included 1 month of sub.

Perhaps that makes someones life easier. He was not able to just sub to the game.

Like it has been stated above, I am told I need a Sub every time I try to log in after downloading and purchasing a new subscription. I used to play PS1 in it's infancy and miss it dearly. I just want a fix until PS2 is released!

I'm getting a network error when I try to log in to the launcher.

"Network error, the server is not responding. Please check your connections"

This is kind of rediculous, I mean the fact that I'm paying $15 for this 8 year old game is one thing, but to have to deal with stuff like this? ... come on.

I just installed yesterday; I still had the 45 days of comp time from SOE for the hacking incident. First off, installing from the old CDs did me no good and I was getting the launcher issue you were having. If you get a small little launcher that only has the username/password and a two little buttons under it, you have the wrong one. It will say the server's down/check your connection and I couldn't get past that.

I went here and clicked the "reinstall" link for Planetside
http://www.soe.com/getthegame

You get a normal-looking launcher with a progress bar that will download all the files. You have to enter username/password for it to work; I don't know what happens if you need to sub because I didn't need to with the comp time I have.

After that, if you have Win 7 64-bit, you will get a runtime error when you first start the game. I set both the launcher and the PS.exe file to XP compatibility and it fixed it (I don't know exactly which file actually needs it; I was just making everything I could XP compatible to get things to work). Also make sure there are no security issues where it chooses to not run as administrator and says you don't have permission or something. I made sure all users had permissions for everything.

Now that we have some new players incoming, maybe you should add some more helpful stuff to the OP.

For example i found this site very helpful because i forgot pretty much all slash commands :) :

http://www.onlinegamecommands.com/planetside/planetsidecommands.htm

Or this official link that explains how to make text macros:

http://planetside.station.sony.com/strategy/tips.vm

And for lasting pleasure, how to use colored text (again from "online game commands"):

http://www.onlinegamecommands.com/planetside/planetsidecolour.htm

I bet those links would be helpful for newcomers and returning players alike.

This outdated installation guide is more confusing then helpful these days. :p

No link to installer and generally outdated links and infos (everything in the Wki / OP leads to SOEs main page from which you can't select PS1).

We could really use an updated version and sticky that instead of this. Link to installer, link to wiki is all it really needs.
