About 2 years ago I had my in game handle for a sony station game changed because sony staff hate the word gay and changed my handle for me and would not let me use it.
All I have to say is it better not happen in PS.

A couple of things here.
First of all, the naming policy is not yet completed, so things may change. I won't say which way, mainly because I don't know. But don't consider anything either off-limits or permissible just yet.
Also, let's face it: the word 'gay' is loaded with ideology. If it wasn't, why would we be discussing it? It would be irresponsible to create a naming policy without considering what to do with the word.

I would be... How do I put it...
Extreamly annoyed. Everyone on the planet knows me as BigGayAl. Had this nick since college. Used it for Tribes, Tribes 2, Half-Life, yada yada.
Who do I need to petition?

Yeah, BigGayAl is a name representing a character, which is mostly innocent, but I would think naming rules without rules against those sorts of names would be a very poor decision on Sony's part. Sorry Al.

Some names do not need to be in the game, we know what kinda names these are, and I hope we can trust sony to make the right choices on the naming policy.

For me something like BigGayAl is nothing, it's a character (And a funny one at that)
Saying GaySniper... unless a statement about the sexual orentation of said sniper is ussing the word Gay as a derogatory, somethign that many people (myself included) find offensive and unnecessary.
I hope that Sony creates a naming policy that will allow the satirical and funny ie. BigGayAL while not allowing the offensive or insensitive...
What I'd almost prefer from Sony is instead of setting down Draconian naming policies... allow people to use the Apeal system. I see GaySniper I can appeal, and perhaps a few others would... then Sony does something about it... To me this is a far better sollution and will allow the community for all intents and purposes to police itself for content.
Also they need to let peeps use certain special ASCII characters, more to the point, i want my . :p

Sorry Al, but naming policies in game are not intelligent enough to disallow gayhomofaggot whilst allowing biggayal.
You disallow one you disallow them all.
In EQ if your name did not go thru the naming filter, you could petition a GM who would take your desired name and check it. So maybe that will happen here in certain cases, who knows.

Sorry Dio, but, no way in hell :p
If you have ASCII, if you ever send a PM, you have to type the characters name, in ASCII. It is going to be bad enough even with the 1337 names, no need to add ASCII in :D

BigGayAl Is a character, he's gay, thats promoting Gay lifestyle yes?
Now what if someone went in as BigStr8Bob? And then someone complained that that was hateful to BigGAyAl?
Sony isn't EVEN gonna play that game, so I would bet moneyt that BigGayAl aint gonna fly. Cause if you allow "Positive, good Gay Names" Then you have to let "Positive, Anti-Gay Names: and in this day and age, that isn't gonne happen.

MrVicchio are you running for office? :E
Yeah I wana be BigStraightBob !!!
Nah how about LesbianLover, or PetitieLesbianSusan.
Yep, with this reasoning BigGayAl should not be allowed, as people can take it the wrong way. This is not a statement of sexuality, we all know Gay means Happy!!! Al is just stating he is happy.
Im really p***ed off about the abuse of the word gay. Gay means happy, period. Somebody way back in the mist of time took a perfectly well meaning English word and added a sinister sexual twist to it so that it becomes offensive to even utter this word.
Al is just saying that he is happy. Hes Big Happy Al. Oh why cant the world be frivilous and gay just as it once was.

Just as a side issue... WOOOOOHOOOO that last post made me a vet! Yeeha.
If Sony is going to behave anything like they currently do in EQ, which I think they will, they're going to be relentless with their naming policy. As it stands currently in EQ, they'll change your name in a heartbeat if its the least bit offensive. I don't see anything with the word gay in it making it past the character creation screen, and if it somehow does, they'll change it the first time someone petitions that they find it offensive. A guy in my guild in EQ has made it a hobby to petition names he doesn't like, and they ALWAYS get changed. Sadly, I'd start thinking of another name if I were you :(

Do it the smart way, kinda like Raven shield, player name = whatever he wants, player ID = given by server.
So if you want to send a message to Sn|p3r_M0mm you just type in console listIDsquad or something and it shows his ID along with everybody else in your squad, something like that.
That would be cool but sadly i know it won't happen, bye bye . :tear:

Although not for the same reasons, I agree with Mr. Vicchio. I am betting that Big Gay Al is not gonna fly. As a sporkfire said their is alot of ideolgy attached to the word gay. The fact that there is a South Park character does not mean anything.
In fact, I think the fact that it is attached to south park makes it less likely to be accepted. South Parks characters are supposed to be contravercial. (It is not like South Park is rated G)
Although I would bet that BigStr8Bob would be acceptable.

They (more than obivously) cannot filter out the bad taste of the word, and the good taste too (if it exists). I'd put my dollar on never seeing someone with that in their name, and wouldn't be surprised if someone used l33t to make it (e.g., g4y), and then was forced to change it.
Why don't they just ban the word gay, and have the option to mail an admin to get special permission to use a name, like perhays someones name is Lig Ayra (I actually know a kid by that name) and everyone knoews them as Ligayra but gay just happens to be in the name. So BigGayAl could just request the use of gay in his name, if he presented the case well enough.

BTW One day, I will seek public office but anyhoots:
Anything that could incite a lawsuit will not be allowed...
You allow GAY in a name, someone is either gonna get offended, or is gonna want a pro str8 name and that just leads to a morass that distracts from the game, and creates bad PR, and NO company wants bad PR.
Thats my take on it.
And here are a few words that mean one thing, but you cant say cause it was high-jacked:
Gay = Happy/ But now means a Homosexual
****** = a bundle of wood... same as above
Niggerdly = miser, illerate people just see the wor dminus the dly and think it means something it doesnt
Theres three, anyone else got more?

bitch = female dog
this is so stupid. Too many homophobes and people who get offended over the stupidest things. I saw a good comic dislaying politically correct lawers or something. A teacher was pointing to a chalkboard that said:
1. misinterperate
2. take offense
3. ban
sad thing is, it's so true.

im not sure but i think they should allow it because of the word filter, so if people don't wanna see the word they can have it filterd and it would be big$%^al, i saw a screenshot somewhere with a name that was filtered somewhere can't remember.
just a thought...

There isn't a name filter in beta, as there is no need since they were the beta at the time.
THe point is, if you see NotYour@#$&@, you can't type that in to send a message. You need to type in NotYourBitch, which entirely defeats the point of the filter anyhow.
I think it goes without saying that, if they are going for a teen rating, the following words will not be allowed in a name (sorry if it affends anyone, and it probably does, that is why they aren't allowed):
bitch
whore
slut
fuck
piss
Etc. Basically if it is sex related, it will be a no. If it is something that a filter would pick up, it is a no.
If you don't like this, I would get over it. If you aren't intelligent enough to create a witty handle without using profanity or sex related terms, ask someone else. ;)
This sorta thing always makes me laugh.
He we are in a supposedly tolerant era and yet something that people claim is ok, is actually controversial when spoken. In other words if being a homosexual isn't ethicly wrong then why is the whole world having such a hard time using these terms? Because it is ethicly wrong! Thus the controversy.

Because using BigGaySniper as your name in game isn't because you are gay but simply because using the word is cool or rebelious and bla bla bla. There's probably like 0.00001% of people using gay in their name that actually are. Same for saying "Man that guy is gay", it's wrong simply because it implies that gay is an insult.

I'm going to have to go with Kiwi on this one... GEEZ, just find another fraggin' name already!
Look at it from Sony's POV, there are people who really will not play, i.e. pay for, the game (or let their kids play the game) if people can have that kind of stuff in there. But really, is some 13-year-old who gets stymied on the character creation screen and can't have "chickenfucker" as a name really going to throw down his mouse (and credit card) in protest? Heck no, he's going to play as "chickenlover" and find some other way to be offensive and annoying.
Avast ye, I'll have to break out my Ultima Online cutl@$$!

And, even outside the dangerous word issue, BigGayAl would violate the copyright rule that you can expect to show up in the naming policy.
