View Full Version : PlanetSide Next: Improving on the original.

So I realize that we have had a TON of discussions on what we all think PlanetSide Next SHOULD be and Shouldn't be. So I wanted to create a thread saying what I hope that the next game is.. :)
I hope that the next PlanetSide is an improvement on the original. I don't want the original game reskinned for a new year. I do think there is plenty of room for improvement and new systems. We are all very used to PlanetSide in it's current form, hot drops, jackhammers, base hacks and more.
But thinking outside the box of what we know I really think there is a TON of potential for this game to be awesome. Adding things like night combat, "Select" modular vehicles, different things to capture (aside from just bases). It's obviously important that the next game remain hugely focused on team but I think there is a ton of room for improvement.
What do you guys think? What do you want the next game "to be" and what I mean by that is are you happy with a cookie cutter carbon copy or do you want a (somewhat) new game that pays homage to the original.

I think Hamma is getting a little trigger happy as far as the 'create a new thread' button is concerned =p

One thing I want to see improved is more team gameplay.

Every change I detail in the PUP has a few core goals:
Make the game team orientated.
Make every item useful.
Make every role have depth.
As we are well aware, the things that made PS great were:
Certification system
Massive combat
Wide range of roles

Yeah, too much thinking is stuck in Planetside's quirks. I really hope they turn the design quality up to 11 and make a great game that is familiar but new to veterans.

How do I contribute in a discussion that doesn't exist? I'm trying to figure out the point of this thread. You stated your opinion. I know if I argue it (I agree with it) I'll be called a troll for having a different opinion, and if I agree with it that doesn't really add to the discussion.
Your thread reads like a blog post is my point.
This is true. There's no room for discussion, which is what a forum is for, neigh?

I agree with this statement, but it should be in the want section all the same. You're saying here that you want people to think outside planetside and make sure its 2.0 instead of 1.5 (like all the comments on specific weapon balancing, when we won't be seeing the weapons in the same way in Next). You want us to get past these 'nerf this' comments and think about NEW FEATURES. Again, I agree with that. But should this statement, or really request, have its own thread?
Bags, you're getting these remarks on trolling because of how you state your opinions. People are getting tired of your 'crap' because it's phrased condescendingly, and you haven't even been straight on your history with Planetside. I could put on my internet tough guy face, but that's not my job nor my place. It just seems like you're ragging on the game and saying how bad it was and will be when, in between the lines, you do have legitimate points. You just alienate everyone against you in the way you post them.
*Edit* feel free to edit my post or delete it, hamma. Just PM me if you delete it so I can respond to your point. I'll understand.

Like Hamma said, more stuff to capture would be nice. Labs, bunkers, radar towers, relays, supply depots, etc. that will help give an edge to your empire out in the field (+1% vehicle damage, +5 life on respawn, etc.)
Unlockable common pool weapons. The weapons would be balanced by being more specialized (Slower rate of fire for a little more power).
Customizable vehicles for specialized missions (A veteran prowler driver can choose less powerful shells in exchange for extra armor to spearhead an attack, or a reaver pilot can swap out smaller guns for an extra +10 kph top speed to make quicker hit and run attacks).
Personalized soldiers. I'm wearing a belt holding 4 knives across my chest because it looks cool. No I don't actually use them to fight with!

I agree although I believe it will be hard to make every item useful. On paper everything looks useful but when the game is released there is always some item that is more rarely used.
Hamma: Funny that you mention Jackhammers what excatly is it that needs to be done about those?

I agree with alot of the things said here.
Early on in the release of PS, I posted ideas of Customizable Vehicals, but also lumped them in with a veriety of things across the board. Was receaved about 50-50, but most things I tied into merrits. Like a bonus for playing your role for a long time, the better you got at the role for playing, the more you got to ajust to play that role better. Eg... Medic as you went up in silver gold and such, you were able to rez people faster. or say sniping be able to ajust or get different ammo to reduce dmg but up AV dmg, or reduce dmg and up grade gun to 2 round clip and such would of taken time to balance, but we got a crapy Sniper gun instead. and some of the sugetions for vehicals in same manner we got the Vulture and such. I had also sugested you culd only use the bonuses from the badges when they were worn, so you could only use 3 at a time witch may of helped balance things easyer.
Lest i thought and still do, that lest got some kinda of reward for every thing for long term play in that role, then just a badge.

Kind of redundant since we have threads all over this forum with ideas already. But if I had to pick the things I think they should focus on most it would be:
1: Long term player goals. It's the recipe for success an maintaining subscriptions in any MMO. Players got to have things to work towards. Since team play an veterans not having large advantages over new players is the spirit of Planetside...these things need to take that into account.
Rather than more cert points which would also be against Planetside design. I recommend things like limited use special abilities or rare weapons not easily replaced after you die. And Outfit an Empire rewards too.
2. Terrain. In Planetside most of the action was consentrated on the Bases,Towers an they were the same for the most part. That's kind of boring an makes it stale fast. Need more varried terrain an base design. And I have mentioned in other threads but I think the ability to deny air travel to the enemy sometimes could also improve the importance of terrain an move the action out into the field some more. Such as a anti air missile facility making its radius a no fly zone. Which itself is already another target to fight over adding more variety.

More Building Variety
I don't just mean floors and levels. I mean totally different designs. Remember the pics of purple towers before release? Faction specific structures would be an excellent idea. The plain grey concrete can't be on every building.
More Updates.
This could be a pretty broad topic. But giving people new things and actually paying attention to them helps a lot. City of Heroes calls them "Free Expansions", but no other game gives so many major updates so frequently, free of cost.
TF2 did a lot of content fairly quickly for the first two years of its life. I think development has petered off for it now though. Not bad for a $20 game.
