I'd honestly like to see a Loadstar, AMS or even a Router. I really hope the deploy time for the Router Pad is decreased in Planetside Next to utilize it more. Shoot, just make it like a 10 second deploy time with very little health so it needs to be guarded.

I agree. I'm starting to set my expected beta date much later, like June/july. It might have always been that. I doubt SOE is stupid enough to announce a game they never intended to make. But I wouldn't put it beyond them to say "Well hey we give current PS subscribers the first chance to get into PSN beta and it'll start around march" just to get some extra months of cash from that while they always knew they'd actually start beta much later :p

LOL I have been enjoying the heck out of the swell of non-obviously-cheating players since they banned the very costly free accounts.

My bet: They're waiting to see how much interest the new press is going to bring in the form of hits on the PS site and new/reactivated subs. I know there's more than just a few of us returning vets, who knows how many more will come in the next time they mention it at all?

I don't have much faith in SOE but they are part of a corporation and if they think they can make a buck off anything, they'll probably do it unless they can make more by investing the same resources elsewhere. Right now they've got their PS people doing...what, exactly? On friday at the same time (good time for both US and EU) we should all send a twitter message to Smed (and t-rex if anyone has his twitter) and ask what's up with Planetside next, or some sort of message relating to it. The point was that Huxley and Duke Nukem Forever aren't exactly examples of good game marketing/development/planning/whatever and can't be used as an example as to how SOE is likely to run their Planetside Next campaign. At least, we should all hope that's not what they intend to do :p

Yeah they made a mistake by starting to release information at a steady pace (the screenshots) and even coming here and interacting with the community, answering questions, giving info. And then suddenly disappearing.
Seen so many companies make this same mistake. Once you start a certain pace of information people become accustomed to it. Any decrease will be met with annoyance and impatience.

I'm curious about what is going on behind the curtains at SOE. I think we can all agree, that the interpretation of Smedlys message, that PS:N will be released in March, is wrong (his message can be read here: http://www.planetside-universe.com/news-planetside-next-spring-2011-2421.htm). Despite him saying "very big launch", which you would think means game release, he must have meant something else. I didn't expect such a fast release anyway, but it does make you wonder why he would say that.

So far there have only been small interviews etc - they haven't 'officially' announced the game yet, or? The screenshots they have shown us so far are more or less just small teasers and this 'service' is of non-binding character - People only assumed that we would get new screenshots every friday.

Maybe they are holding back the other material for when they 'officially' announce the game, so they have something to show. Personally I believe, that the game is in alpha stage at best, months away from an open beta or even a release, but I would'nt mind to be proven wrong. Should the beta or release date be close, I would question their marketing strategy though, as it would be just as bad (or non existant) as the last time. Surely they have learned their mistake?

I will grant that information is a privilege not a right, but so is getting PS:N using that logic. It is not our right to get a new Planetside game. But anyway, I do remember Smed saying that there was going to be a "big announcement" "early" in 2011 and that a "big launch" would happen in march.

I think that all this is is SOE leading us on to a "big launch" to get everyone to resubscribe only to then announce, and then release, new downloaded content for Planetside that will make trees pretty, nerf the lasher yet again, and add spiffy new hats to all in game characters that look like used condoms.

They will also change PS to a "free to play" game in which you must pay .50 every time you access a terminal and for $25 a month you get a special purple VS cow for your farmville account. They will then proceed to make billions of dollars from farmville addicts who sign up just to receive their purple cow. It will make big headlines as surpassing World of Warcraft in revenues, SOE will label Planetside a "success" and Planetside NextER will be announced for a 2013 launch.

I await with anticipation as I clear a space on my farm for my impending purple VS cow. Once received I plan to smile and say "I love big brother!"

They need to keep updates of all kinds coming from now until release to keep morale high. It doesn't have to be much, our expectations are really low right now. We are still asking for pictures... that is softball stuff in the bigger scheme of game advertising and hype. The real juicy stuff are things like interviews, tech trailers, action / story trailers, non-scripted in game video, hitting the majors sites like Gametrailers, Kotaku, Hard News (Skrewattack.com) and all of the sites that do general MMO news etc. Until we get to that point we have to assume they mean to delay the launch.... or they are the worst advertisers in the biz.

Bold-text was my emphasis. So essentially what that means is that SOE has a contract with The9 to distribute and operate their game in China. If you're familiar with Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer: Age of Reckoning, Mythic contracted a European company called GOA to run their games in Europe. This is done by a more or less ironclad legal contract. The same can almost assuredly be said for The9 + SOE. Which means, yes, actually, the guy's statement is more reliable than you, more reliable than me, more reliable than the other people saying things like "Oh, Smedley promised there would be Planetside:Next in March, he said exactly that, blah blah blah". SOE has never officially announced the game, so I think perhaps you are jumping quite a bit ahead in your assumptions. The fact that a Chinese company claims to have distribution rights to a game that doesn't exist and hasn't been announced officially is also even stranger, and doesn't really lend any credibility to the game actually being completed. In fact, if the game were essentially 100% done except for art, why has there been no announcement or in-game screenshot or any information whatsoever at all?

Even if a Beta was launched there should be something more. Unless they are just being very secretive about a game for no reason that i can think of because more is more profitable there will be no planetside:next this year. I have given up hope when all i see is 3 screen shots that are probobly not in-game (maybe 1) and a hinting of something happening. Well, launch of beta then perhaps? Cant be anthing else really. They propably did what Netdevil was about to do with Jumgate Evo: get the beta out in a state other games have been released, means as bug free as possible.


That, or the Launch doesnt have much to do with PSN. No sane person can assume that the game would hit the stores this month, thats just plain simply impossible, until SOE is just trying to kill themself by releasing a MMO without actual Mass testing. :)

Well TBH you have only yourselves to blame, Their version of PS-N was most likey ready to roll out this month, then we started to discuss in detail what should be put in and taken out of the game based on our experiences of the original and other MMO's and FPS's and convinced the Dev team to make changes!

True, I think we are all expecting something this month, and at this point I think even a new screenshot or official quote would hold us over for awhile. Month ain't over, so there is plenty of time to hit the panic button.

Speaking of the panic button, what Smed has said is not some vast right wing conspiracy to make a few quick bucks. They are developing Planetside: Next. That is indisbutable.

Then, if we take what the head of The9 said about the status of PS:N it really all makes sense. He said the game is pretty much done with the exception of the artwork which they are currently working on. Sooooo, if they are not done with the artwork yet, they would have very little to show us, right?

I'd probably like a few more soundbites from SOE about PS:N, hell even a tweet from Smed occasionaly would be nice until we get, you know, an actual website up for it. So T-Ray needs to get his men workin double-time. There's deadlines to meet and the natives are getting restless for more sweet delicious tidbits we can nibble on. If we didn't love what we've seen so far, we wouldn't be this anxious.

Well I can't wait to get more information on PS:N but I am guessing that Smedley and SOE probably have their reasons for not releasing any further information. We know that Smedley has always had a special relationship to Planetside maybe that statement about big launch coming in March was wishful thinking from his side? :)

I don't expect to see a big fancy trailer but it would be nice if SOE could officially announce the game and maybe launch a website dedicated to the sequel and start talking more to the community about the game. I don't have to see actual screenshot but if they could just start communicating with the community about the game than I am sure that would probably satisfy many players.

Been checking back less and less. It's nice seeing so many optimists on this forum. The pictures actually had me going for a while, but the missing weapons on the models tipped off my suspicions that things were maybe halfway through development maybe.

I will say one thing. I hope for the sake of the people that resubscribed that they'll be let into the beta even if they unsubscribe again. Not a big beta person myself after seeing some really buggy betas that were more like alpha tests and almost unplayable. Ruins the experience. I remember seeing training during the PS Beta. That was pretty bad that they let that stuff release. :p

When it comes to SOE and Planetside, you can typically rely on them to do the opposite of whatever the best course of action would be.

In this case, they're remaining pretty silent about PSN, so it's almost a certainty that they should have announced it, released screenshots/information and already be hyping the game to the best of their ability.
