I don't remember how long a run it was, but I think it was a 7 miler with gear. It was pretty brutal, the Drill Sergeants making us hold our M16s above out heads, out the side, in front of us during the run. Well, the 20 of us that made it, we felt pretty proud, but when we arrived at the range, we were forced to stand in formation for 20 more minutes while the clowns who dropped came straggling in. (Some had vomited up their b-fast, which was funny looking.)

When they all got back, those of us that made it did get to sit and eat fruit for a few minutes before falling out for firing.

The only time the Drill Sergeants even considered us worthy of their conversation was AFTER we graduated. But man, was that a good feeling!

Jackson in the 80s was a different animal. I did my MEPS inprocessing there and my recruiter showed me what I'd be in for. I thought it was like Boy Scouts, personally. Benning in the early 90s was full of shit-hot Ranger-qualified Drills.

I had no idea what to expect. When I got to Reception, I made a quick joke as the Tac Sergeant was coming up to the bus, and said something like "Aw shit, here comes Sergeant Slaughter". It broke the tension and people started laughing, but when that dude stepped on the bus he said, real quiet-like, "You got fifteen seconds to get off this goddamn bus, and fourteen of 'em are gone."

About one really long second later, it was a madhouse.

Come to find out, Reception was a joke compared to what we'd be going through. We got to our various units and that ride on the cattle-car over was terrifying. When the Drills got the doors open, that's when the real ride began. Those guys tore into us and it was almost the same as what you said, Mani.

Oh man, I forgot about those things...you would think you would look forward to riding in the heat of South Carolina. Not on your life in one of those things. Painted OD green and with little slit windows near the top, those things were ovens on wheels. They packed us on them sometimes, I think just to torture us.

Once, after the notorious gas chambers, we all packed on. One of the guys had some CS gas still in his steel pot and when he put it back on his head, the stuff settled out and he started freaking out...almost caused a riot on that thing. :lol:

It was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life, but at the same time, it gave me a sense of what I could do if I had to. As I advanced in my training in the Army, I realized I could do much more than I thought I could do...a real confidence booster.

Did the EXACT same thing, Went to Benning in 09 and then again in 10. Worst idea ever. My Basic was awful too say the least, 2 DS's went to jail for beating the shit out of us, and one went crazy due to his second divorce and was taken away to the loony bin. needless to say I used the training I received and now I teach it to my soldiers. I am a specialist and Team Leader in a 240 Gun Crew. Being weapons Squad, and using the highest casualty producing weapons, we are help to the highest standard.

I do not consider myself a fancy-pants beer drinker, just someone who likes beer and is not an amateur. I am not too good to drink mainstream beer. What I am, is a 30-something male who has tasted a number of beers and concluded that what YOU call "mainstream beer" is simply coloured water. It's shite. It's laughable. It's cheap. Mainstream? Maybe, if you consider Wal-mart to be a fancy, more expensive version of Big Lots or K-mart. Do you buy your shoes at Pic-n-Pay or at a place which sells quality products? If you can't afford the extra dollar or two for quality beer, then you are forgiven - this economy is rough, and I applaud your penny-pinching measures. It's not enough, though. Consider cutting off the beer altogether, and switch to Ramen instead of McDonalds.

Your first mistake is beer in a can. If you enjoy the taste of metal with your water, why not save money even more and go drink from an old spiggot/faucet?

I have had shitty beer. I've had shitty foreign beer. The most striking example that comes to mind is Japanese beer, I believe it was a Sapporo. Cheap American beer is shit. That's all there is to it. You can find a non-thick beer (I see you're also confused as to the difference in beer styles). I'm presuming you're lumping all non-Buds into the same category as Guinness. You are mistaken. Out of respect for the art of beer drinking and in a desire to help a novice along, I will help you my friend. I do not extend this courtesy often, as I prefer to mock instead of educate.

Let me put this on a scale that you can understand. Bud is water, Guinness is cold beef stew or chewing gum. In between you have a number of options. I see that you desire something not quite as chewy as the aforementioned meal-in-a-can - perhaps a delicious glass of koolaid. You can find them, chill them, and enjoy them on a hot day. Best example is what's called a witbier. If you want to "buy American", I recommend Blue Moon. It's not a "thick beer", chills excellently, and is refreshing on a cold day or a hot day. You can forego the... err... "foo-foo" factor of putting an orange slice in there, if you wish. But let me caution you - as a flaming heterosexual, all-out "manly man", eschewer of "metrosexual" tendencies, and devout practitioner of testosterone-laden activities, I see nothing queer, flaming, or even remotely foo-foo about putting an orange slice in a Blue Moon. It actually enhances the flavour.

You were fucking lucky... you didn' have to wear all that BULLSHIT outside the wire. I HATED those damn plates with every fiber of my motha fuckin being.

That's because that picture was actually taken BEFORE we crossed the border. That was in Kuwait doing training for the invasion. I had my plates in after we crossed the border, but we actually had to also cross the border in MOPP gear also!

Fortunately once we got to the Karbala gap they realized we weren't gonna get gassed probably so they let us go back to normal gear. Since I was driving our Medic 113 at that point I started wearing my coveralls and the smaller flak vest that crew members wear. But once we got to Baghdad and we started doing dismount operations the plates and shit went right back on, lol.
