View Full Version : PlanetSide "Next" to be unveilled at GDC 2011
Since we all know that PS will be released Q1/Q2 of this year, and there hasn't been much known about it (not even a trailer) that means they have to start getting press releases and marketing the game if they want to release this game with success.
GDC 2011 starts late February and goes on until early March. Among the exhibitors are Sony Computer Entertainment and The9 (Planetside publisher) (http://expo.gdconf.com/2011/exhibitor-list/).
GDC is a huge event for new releases and if the Planetside developers want this game marketed and want PC gamers to know about it, this convention is the best place to do so.
E3 is great but way too late (June), and ideally Planetside should have trailers, videos, pics and even the beta before then, that is if they are confident they can release it no later than Q2.
That's my theory. I hope PS gets the recognition it needs to become a successful MMOFPS.

I checked the exhibitor's list SOE isn't included, If SCE announces it could possibly be a PS3/PC platform game like DCUO or i'm overthinking

Aww, your title made it sound like there was an official announcement saying such. Though I'm definately not saying that you're wrong, sounds like a pretty feasible "theory".

Why does everyone keep saying this? They arnt going to release the game for consoles. Its too much for them. Consoles probably couldn't handle PS1.

It would seem like a good time to announce it an match up with what Smedley has said. But yeah SOE not being listed makes it seem doubtful.

We don't know this at all. All we know it that *something* is going to happen late first, early second quarter. Whether that's an official release date announcement, beta starting, website launching, etc.
Late Q1 is March, early Q2 is April. Do you really believe that a game with 5 screenshots released, no website, no official name, no release date, NOTHING, other thant 5 pictures and a few sentences from the devs is going to be released in the next two-and-a-half months?

Yea SOE is not on there, I'd be surprised to hear anything from GDC.

It happened with APB and other games have also released shortly after media was released.
I thought Smedley said already that this game was out for Q1/Q2 and I read somewhere on these forums (or the official forums) that this game is finished, just fine tuning the graphics and models. Maybe that's why we have only seen pictures of models, and not landscapes or actual screen-shots, because they aren't 100% done with the game's graphics?

Well how different is SCE from SOE?

Yeah sorry I should've put a question mark in it or something
Misleading title is misleading.
Please add question mark to end of thread title.

That has no basis in reality. They could certainly handle PS1, and PS:N doesn't look to be the pinnacle of graphics detail either.
For instance, the PS3 handles Fallout:NV as well as a computer does (in my experience, I have played on both). It actually has a number of critical PS-related elements, such as long draw distances.
Though I won't play it on my PS3, I don't like console shooters.

Porting PS to a console would be like porting Einstein's theories to make them usable in tiddlywinks. "Dumbing it down" is exactly what it would become.
Consoles are to PC games what consoles are to PC's. Technology that is aging by the minute, while PC's stay current, and, admittedly, reward those with the dosh to spend on hardware.
Just the controller itself is an annoying piece of garbage, to me. Add that to the fact that the whole box, controllers and all, costs less than some people's cooling solutions for their computers, and, well, console games blow.

I agree. MMO's in general cannot work on consoles. MMOs are designed for communities and communication between other players. It's not practical for console gamers to have the level of communication between PC players (as they do not have keyboards). PCs are just more efficient and better developed for MMOs because a mouse and keyboard allows more customization and controls than a standard crap controller.

I don't think it's possible to do that now

Thread title should be changed it basically states it as a fact when its a theory by the OP.

I think the logic was "SCE isn't SOE. SCE deals with consoles. If SCE were to announce an SOE game then it would have to be because it's coming to consoles."

It does have basis in reality. Otherwise why isn't the PS3 already crawling with MMO's like the PC? Most MMO's would not run on a console. It's not so much the graphics as the scale an how much memory it requires. Take your Fallout NV example how many enemies do you usually see on screen at any given time? Probably rarely more than 20.
Better example to support your case would be MAG. With its 256 player battles. However its still a far cry from the scale of Planetside. And IMO its probably the max that the PS3 can handle. Since I don't see why they wouldn't have gone larger if they could.

Is SOE's fiscal calendar lined up with the year? A lot of businesses have different starts to the business year and when they say Q1, they usually mean fiscal year, not calendar year.
