View Full Version : Looks like a storm is rolling in...

It may just be me, but I for one really miss the weather movements of the original Planet side. I know it had little to know effect on the game play itself, but the immersion level was higher to look at the map and see rolling storms throughout the continents. I enjoyed flying through them simply because it mixed up the scenery and made a base attack during a thunderstorm bad ass IMO. Anyone agree/even remember what I am talking about?

I know exactly what you mean. Exactly the visualization and immersion. That was something I liked to see perk-up a lot more in the original PlanetSide but it didn't...

I thought the weather was cool too, but I sacrificed it for years in order to improve performance. Now, even though the sound and visuals could be labeled a distraction, I still think the cool factor outweighes that. My only concern for Next is the amount of lag the weather will create.

Agree. A million times agree. I just posted about this in the wishlist thread.

Respawned to a base on the other side of Ish today and walked out the door into a sandstorm; was pretty sweet.

Weather adds immensely to the atmosphere (pun?) of the game. Night combat will really mix things up as well.

They definitely need to make weather have an effect on draw distances. That and make plants impossible to remove.

I really enjoyed those weather effects. It took some time before I realised you could turn them off. Beside gaining a minor performance boost, it also removed the limited vision range some storms caused you to have, it was also then when I put one and one together why I got snipped with out me being able to see a single enemy unit through the storm.

This always made me wonder if they where removed because of performance issues (what I doubt) or because the imbalance it created over those who had it turned on versus those who had it turned off.

Would you guys want weather to have an effect on gameplay other than draw distance? Say aircraft can't enter a sand storm without crashing or land vehicles have are slowed during a heavy rain storm if they aren't on a road.

I don't know whether I would like this or not but it would certainly make players have to change their tactics in certain situations.

I don't care as long as nothing RNG; IE random lightning, random missing.

I think this is really important, having others gain advantages because they play the game in lowest detail is an unfair advantage and kind of lame imo.

As long as flora doesn't cut your fps in half in psn I'd be fine with it being unremovable.

you know thunderstorms messes with comuncations and sensors!, false alarms poping up on empty conts, or alarms not going off on conts a faction just started moving into =)

I love flying in PS and I would love it if a huge storm would knock my reaver around in the wind. I'd still like to be able to fly through anything, but having it do more than just limit my view and get noisey would be a welcome improvement on a very cool idea.

Variables likes this add variety in a game that thrives on variety.

I've always found the FPS argument amusing as a reason for removal. I've had it on for years and it doesn't effect my performance.

Yeah. I don't know about anyone else, but seeing shit like the pic below in real life caused me to think twice about having to go outside the wire. Imagine how our pilots felt.

For me, I was trying to squeeze every ounce of performance out of my rig that I could. If anything had a slight improvement on my fps, then I did it. It wasn't a huge effect, but when you are scrounging, you'll take anything.

Ironically, with my computer now, I have all the graphics setting set to max and I don't know if I've seen my fps drop below 100. Why wasn't AMD making quad-cores in 2003? :)

Yes I do. Especially sandstorms wrecking aircraft. It would be like dune.

Lol yeah I forgot everyone has the same computer as you do. It affects my fps heavily, case closed.

Flora actually providing as much cover as it provides opacity would be good, too. Form 50 yards away, the flora is all gone, so it blinds me from looking over a hill, but anyone can see me, because they are far enough away that they don't even see any of it, just you creeping up and looking stoopid.

There's no point in having flora in a game if it provides no benefit. If it can't be used as cover and concealment, get rid of it.

And since you can turn it off, you can't use it. Whilst YOU might be creeping up on my position, FRAPsing yourself and talking like Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, stalking through the grass like a crouching lion on the African savanna in hopes of pouncing upon me unawares, I might have flora turned off and I'm just waiting for you to walk into arm's reach so I can melee boost + chainblade secondary-mode your dumb ass.

That's all fine and dandy, old bean. It really is - whatever works for you. If you can use it without loss of FPS and it looks nice, that's totally cool with me.

Oh right the canned response. Nice and creative there Bags.

If its in the game, you shouldn't be able to turn it off. If it's as much of an FPS issue for people they just shouldn't add it. Making it toggle-able just makes it an unfair advantage so what's the point.

Why don't they just write code with stick figures so my 486/DX will run the game! Case closed!

My computer from 2005 still runs Planetside, it doesnt matter what year the computer is from, but the components that it's made of. If your new computer has a crappy CPU or video card, its not going to run well. Period.
